It looked good. True. But that's it. Otherwise it was un usable for non touch devices. I like the idea behind a Fullscreen experience. However execution was bad
I think it looks good at the time lol i even upgraded all of my laptops to windows 8 at the time. I like how i can install apps (which is not much but there are some useful apps for me like fb, messenger, viber) and yes i know there are desktop apps or a browser for that but i dont know. As a kid i felt like i owned a new gadget while using the same laptop when i upgraded my laptop to windows 8.
Not to mention, I recall when Windows 8 was new, my laptop would constantly suffer from drivers (mostly audio) just randomly breaking, forcing me to sometimes unplug and plug the headset in, or even having to restart the drivers for it to work again. Once I upgraded to Windows 10, the problem is vanished. So on top of the UI being clunky and annoying for mouse and keyboard, I didn't like how buggy some drivers felt with it
Windows 8 was my childhood. My old Toshiba Satellite C850-B990 came with Windows 8 Home Single Language and I remembered being a huge fan of the design. Even though it looks more of like a OS for tablets. When you are on the "Desktop" mode, you can do all of your desktop apps. I didn't even hate the start menu because of how beautiful it was. It was more colorful and less bland compared to say windows 10. I only upgraded to Windows 10 in mid 2020 when I could finally format my family's laptop but dang I took a while in windows 8.
Windows 10 to Windows 8/8.1 was almost what Windows 7 was to Windows Vista. The this is Windows 10 isn't much better OS and with Windows 11 failing people switched to "perhaps we judged you harshly, Windows 10". I personally never switched to Windows 8. I had too much good time with Windows 7 and had to reluctantly upgrade to Windows 10. When I actually used Windows 8, I couldn't really find words to describe how horrible it was. Now thanks to Linux and MacOS I can. Windows 8 UI couldn't work because of Windows legacy stuff. Like say we install some programs and they create a bunch of folders with with even sub-folders in them. It was okay during Win95/XP times, but by Windows 7 it was tedious at best. At least the UI was designed around it. Not so much with all those giant icons. What it should've been is simple program icon to execute programs from start menu, if you don't like clutter desktop with program icons. This is where GNOME or MacOS UI made it easy to manage and navigate even back when Windows 8 was still in active development. The experience of install Windows programs can recreated using WINE and you will have a mess of folders and icons to manage. Even today Windows 11 is using similar idea, but it's still limited by remnants of older Windows releases, specifically Windows 95. As for portable devices I tried using Windows 8 and 8.1 with few different tablet devices and almost all of them had the similar problems. My main problem was the UI. It was too small to manage by comfortably. Windows 8.1 was a little easier for having start button at least, but in general if device doesn't have large screen or attachable touchpad or mouse, you will have troubles navigating small menus and even smaller icons. One thing I should point out is, that I didn't use tablets long enough to see if there was settings to enhance the experience.
@newsuperbowserworld anything is fast if you have a good pc, but that's the problem, not everyone has a good pc. The real test is if it works fast on a low end pc
Man i missed windows 8 too, such a nostalgic ❤ i used it alot back then. Win 8.1 was a bit better than 8 with alot of bug fixed if i remember correctly
I grew up with the tail end of XP, but mainly 7 and 8. I loved 8 and 8.1. Windows 10 is alright (only one supported by Steam that i'll use), windows 11 is horrible.
@@tytanium654 i also started my journey with window xp around 2011 maybe then switched from xp to 7 and 8, the thing u say that window 11 is horrible is totally right man
Probably my favorite version of Windows over the years is Windows Vista. Windows Vista looks so elegant and everything is neatly organized. Like how I would like it if I'm doing office work.
Idk about windows 8 but 8.1 was probably the best operating system I used. If you do not like that full screen start menu, you could use classic shell and it fixes the problem
I own Windows 8.1 and I don't regret it. It comes with a Retail key which works on most Windows versions. One of the reasons I'm still subscribed to surfshark is because of this gentleman. Another reason is because the VPN is great.
Well I like it. Just hover the right corners, click search, and just look up the name of the file and launch it. It's the fastest way to listen to music stored in your hard dr... I mean NVMe SSD. Windows 8 did come with NVMe and USB 3 right away unlike Windows 7: Not to mention Secure Boot, near immediate AM4 support, DX11.1, Turing Nvenc being based off DX11.1. Yeah, this just a repackaging of the Windows 7 we should've gotten. Windows 7 should've already had these things.
After growing up with Windows Xp, 8 was actually the first version and I quickly got used to it, I tend to use active corners on other systems nowadays and I probably learned it thanks to Charms bar, it took me a while to forget about it when I switched to Win7 after like 5 years of using 8/8.1
@@-coal tldr: I wanted to try other version of windows that I haven't really had a chance to use. The following is a way too long unnecessary story but I can't shut up cause I'm too tired at the moment. Windows 8 just kinda broke on me and didn't load outside of the safe mode and I had no idea what caused it, so not having access to my only pc and only having a stick with ZorinOS which I just heard about and wanted to test out in liveUSB mode, for a couple of months I was using that system but the fact that it was getting slow and unstable as the session time grows I wanted to go back to windows, I've tried installing Windows 10 and it just got stuck at around 80% every time I tried it. I didn't have much choice already but I decided to go with 7 since I have never really used it anywhere before, I had a good time with it, it's not that different from 8 as well, missed some metro apps but liked how system was even easier to visually customize it, after some time trying out different looks ended up with just a clean modern looking design without anything overloading it, loved gadgets as well. Eventually I also had a problem with 7, Nvidia graphics bugged out after update and basically I lost ability to play most games with just integrated HD4000 graphics. For about a year I once again switched to the ZorinOS but as a dualboot system so I had access to windows of I need it, eventually I found a way to solve the driver problem by using 3rd party app of a sort, but at this point windows 10 got the big update with light theme and stuff and I tried installing it once again which finally succeeded and I've been using that for 2 years before getting a new laptop with Windows 11 this year.
@@-coal I once had a moment when Windows 8 just crashed on me and wouldn't launch at all, after sitting on ZorinOS for a couple of months I decided to switch to Windows 7 scince I never actually got to try it and I heard a ton of good things about it, loved the nice look, the gadgets, and how easy it was to customise everything just with themes, didn't switch to Windows 10 because at the time my laptop would always get stuck at around 80% through the installation process every single time
At that time, I upgraded my laptop from Windows 7 to the newly released Windows 8. Unfortunately, most of the drivers and software that worked well on Windows 7 crashed on Windows 8. It was a difficult period due to the lack of resources on forums and communities which I cannot find enough solutions to fix those drivers and softwares. However, Microsoft later enhanced Windows 8 and released Windows 8.1, which supported drivers and software from Windows 7. Sadly, by then, many users, including myself, were already dissatisfied with Windows 8 and had decided to revert to Windows 7. My opinion, Windows 8 and 8.1 were great, but those OS came out too fast. Microsoft made the similar mistake as Windows Vista.
It is possible to move between each Metro apps and the desktop by moving the cursor to the upper left corner, but I have never seen anyone using this for some reason...
I love how this video was meant to throw loads of hate on windows 8 and most comments are positive. Windows 8 and 8.1 were the most attractive, fun and fast OS by Microsoft. People complaining about using it, just refused to spend 15 to 30 minutes consciously getting used to the new interface, that's all. I loved that MS era
I did the exact same thing a year ago but instead of installing 8 I installed 8.1 and I was very surprised to see how smooth it is from what I remember.
What I did is purchase a real copy on Windows 8.1... Terribly expensive now as it's basically a collectors item. I used ImgBurn to rip the ISO, make a text file of the activation code and just sell it of while I use Rufus to format a USB to GPT/UEFI. That was my big problem with disc installations, DVDs are MBR by default negating the ability to access passed 2.2TB of storage capacity when I have a 4TB drive just waiting to be used. Not to mention my Sandisk Extreme V2 is also 4TB. I needed GPT on this explicitly for that purpose.
This was the last version where the desktop was actually the desktop, the start screen and tablet elements were still separated unlike 10 and 11 which are horribly combined
Well, I actually have tried Windows 8 in 2021, on my Core 2 Duo Desktop with GeForce 210 GPU. Though, this machine is kinda potato but able to run Windows 8 just fine and maybe Smooth
When Windows 8 (and then 8.1) first came out, I ABSOLUTELY love the looks of it, and still to this day. I know it's a little bit janky in terms of performance, consistency, etc, but the Tiles concept was gorgeous. And the mobile Windows OS that came with Lumia at that time was so cool. Never daily driven Win 8 till this day tho, just trying out on my friends computer. But planning to install 8.1 on my secondary laptop.
I hated Windows 8 so much. Especially coming from 7 which is one of my favorite windows OS. Windows 8 is what made me switch to Mac and haven’t looked back
Despite the fact that many people do not like Windows 8. And I also repeated after them that it is bad. But when I tried to install it... Wow, I just loved this new interface. Even without the touch screen, I liked to control it. In general, the live tiles and interface of Windows 8, 8.1, fullscreen mode in Windows 10 are just my love. And I'm sorry that all this is not in Windows 11.
I remember these days standing in Best Buy looking to buy a laptop today, seeing all of the new Windows 8 junk, I just laughed and walked away with a new Windows 7 pro laptop. I just refused to use windows 8 such a let down by Microsoft.
Can u make a video regarding what happened to Microsoft windows that made so much of Airlines stop working, u can search for it for more details, it is a new thing happened these days. Hope u read my comment. Thanks!
Idk about everyone, but i really loved windows 8.1. I liked how wvwrything was like either you have windows 7 or you have a tablet. I still use a little bit of this system on my old pc, unactivated.
Design-wise it's my favourite Windows. The start menu might have annoyed people, but looks amazing. Same with the Windows Phones of the time. I still like it.
When I got my first laptop and it was Windows 8. After setting all things up, when I opened Start Manu I couldn't figured out how to close start menu and restarted my pc. Fun memories with windows 8 LOL.
I remember we installed this OS in my friend's computer and once it was done, we were just confused, we didn't know what the fuck we were looking at. It looked so different from Windows 7 and I don't even think we made it past the start menu with all the tiles. We instantly reinstalled Windows 7 back.
Uh.. Wasn't there also supposedly a *major* security exploit in the early releases that made it hyper vulnerable to malware attacks as well? It's weird because I distinctly remember the warnings everywhere and even Microsoft's push to get people to update from Windows 8 to 8.1 due to the urgency of the safety issues... Like, it wasn't uncommon for people to warn others to immediately update from 8 to 8.1 as quickly as possible before their devices got hacked.... yet I can't find anything about it online now? If you look at the security updates for Windows 8 in 2016, there were A LOT of them and most were labeled as "important" on Microsoft's site, so maybe that where the idea came from... but if that's the case then shouldn't Windows 7 be feared too?
I really liked how different and modern Windows 8 felt compared to Windows 7. Admit it, Windows 8 was discontinued just because boomers and non-techy users couldn’t adapt the new design language.
I love Windows 8 series Operating System by Microsoft. People are ignorant who do not know how to use it. And give the excuse that it is a bad operating system.
Windows 8 and 8.1 were amazing on the touch screen enabled device. All the gestures made sense very intuitive. Didn't like it when Microsoft cave to the pressure and downgrade the touch experience in the future releases of windows.
It was smooth and i feel better than windows 7 but just some people didn't liked the change and same happened with the windows 11. People doesn't like change even if it's better.
Windows 8 was awesome. This is coming from an Apple fanboy [but who's used Windows for Gaming on PC, right from XP]. Windows 7 was the best, no doubt, then it would be Windows 10, but the 3rd Spot is for Windows 8. Instead of throwing hissy fits like girls, if you spend 5 minutes figuring out how it works, you'd see how fast, fluid, modern, and rather innovating. 8.1 fixed a lot of issues. Man, am so nostalgic rn. My father was given a Lenovo laptop that had Windows 8, and then the company gave him a MacBook because everybody was complaining about Windows 8 lol, so he let me use that Lenovo. I was just amazed the first time I booted up Windows 8. Because I was an Apple fanboy, and own tons of Apple products, and used MacBooks and iPhones, I was just blown away by how modern and futuristic Windows 8 looked as compared to Windows 7 Ultimate [that was on my Gaming PC], and MacOS on my Macs. I remember playing so many Games after downloading them them from the Store. Games like CSR Racing, Real Racing 3, Asphalt Series, Airport City, City building games and on and on. Because they ran in fullscreen, it was just amazing. I absolutely loved the Start Menu. It was so damn good, with so many good apps. Windows 10 is a just a more refined version of the 8's Menu. And Windows 11's sucks. No Live Tiles, nothing. Thanks for joining me on my journey revisiting the good old days. Gonna be nostalgic/ eurphoric/ sombre for the rest of the day now lmfao.
I hate the W8 interface, but, the performance was much better than W7. I used to format my pc couple times per year, until I start using W8. The SO doesn't become slow through the time. Also, W8 started much faster than W7. Also, I didn't have many problems with applications stop working on W8, on W7 it was much more common to see an app stop working
i have 2gb ram pc . windows 8.1 is the best os. it consumes only 500-600mb ram in idle. i previously had windows 7 , which consumes 800mb-1gb ram in idle. i also find win 8.1 is more gui than win 7 and i like it.
I feel like my employer at the time this was released just completely skipped this OS release cause I have no memory of working with this interface at work..😅 in hindsight, maybe that was a good thing lol
I honestly thought that Windows ME was the most hated version of Windows. I remember it was an exiting version of Windows released in September of 2000.
Just to clarify - I do think that Windows 8 during its release was insanely stupid in terms of navigation, but with "service pack" 8.1 they actually found the sweet spot between maintaining both good desktop and touchscreen experience. The main problem was that there was no apps for metro UI, so it became useless over time. My biggest dream back in the day was to use metro UI with only a controller (after all it was very similar to xbox UI) and to have a steam written for metro UI. This would be perfect solution when plugging laptop or desktop to TV. There was a lot of potential in that system and that's why I admire it so much.
Being a computer technician for over 20 years. I assure you Windows 8.1 is one of the best OS Microsoft can offer till date. This is just a mass hysteria. Due to a random famous guy's lack of knowledge on how to use it, people were led to believe it was bad. Despite being a superior Operating system, Windows 8.1 is taking a beating. Software developers and hardware manufacturers are forcing us to abandon Windows 8.1, which is not fair. If software and OS updates are not halted, Windows 8.1 is sufficient for eternity, no need 10, 11 or 12 etc. at all. I can achieve 1 to 3 second start up or boot up to desktop only in 8.1. Tips: Just install Startisback to bring get back classic start menu.
2:02 It wasn’t just ok on touch screen devices, it was significantly better than Windows 10 and 11. A lot of people kept using Windows 8 on their Surfaces until the very end of support. If you were lucky enough to have one of those devices, it wasn’t worth dealing with the buggyness of Windows 10 until it was fixed ages down the line.
i used windows 8 alot, infact i switched to it at the release itself but kinda regret using for so long because it wasn't convenient at all and kinda regret not using windows 7 much when i got my new pc in 2011, forced to use outdated xp thinking it uses less resources not knowing 7 runs better on newer hardware
But to me, in my opinion, I do think windows, eight and 8.1, which was originally catered two computers with touchscreens are actually better for computers with touchscreens because they have those big icons, whereas after this version of windows, that they no longer think about to make the main OS for tablets like even the OS of Windows 11 no longer have the icons, the buttons, more bigger so that it’s easier to press as they have make those OS more for Computers that are not touchscreen like the gestures are not so good like maybe not so user-friendly for touchscreens.
