Thank you for going into so much detail on how to build the composite video mod!

Composite output... to play it on a modern display... lol oxymoron for sure there. Debated doing HDMI or RGB out on my 2600. Changed my mind after I scored the MiSTer. Love these kinds of videos though, thanks.

MiSTer definitely makes it an easier choice! I do love collecting and playing on the older hardware, though... but as you've probably noticed based on the other videos I have on this channel, it's not an either/or decision for me :)

My parents weren't into gaming, but if I were just a few years older I might well have grown up with an Atari. As things turned out, I had an NES and a Genesis and a few others, and they still work to this day. Although, I prefer playing all the games I played as a kid with an emulator. So much easier to beat games when you have save states and can walk away for a few days before coming back to it. Not to mention the ability to rewind and get back that life you just lost.

Sounds like your experience is similar to mine. I had a friend with an Atari 2600, so we would play that at his house, but I grew up mainly with an NES and got a Genesis when I was a teen. There’s definitely some merit to playing on an emulator… though I have to admit that it does feel a little like cheating 😁

@@whatskenmaking Cheating or not we are not kids. I work 10 hours a day, i don't have the luxury of going at it all day long until i get the perfect run. Still try it some times though because i am a stubborn fo0l like that. Anyway in all intended purposes the consoles that will have perfectly fitted my generation will have been the SNES and Mega Drive because i was a baby when NES appeared so i was too little to be playing NES but i am from a small country on the other other side of the planet and at those times we got everything delayed(Just to imagine we had black and white TV in our house and got a colored when i was a little kid. Boy that was a big day for our poor household.). The NES came in my backwaters 2 years before the SNES was about to release in the rest of the world. The SNES had a smaller delay of just 2-3 years as global economies and worldwide shipping etc started to expand. PS1 just a year and by PS2 era we got everything along with the others. Anyway because of that as a little kid the first gaming device i saw was my cousins Atari 2600. I was glued playing the games at his house whenever we visited. Then i saw the NES but there was no way i could ever afford that. It seemed like a super tech device i could only admire. I was especially shocked by the colour and backgrounds. At that time my cousin started bothering with home computers etc and had no need for the old Atari 2600 so after hearing him say he doesn't use it anymore when i went to his house and ask to play so i did the appropriate shameless begging only a little kid can do that got me my first ever console and games(thankfully my cousin bought quite a few). It was really old tech by then since SNES was almost about to release in other world parts, probably already released in Japan and Mega Drive was out there but for me that was an amazing moment. I remember my favorite game was the one with the little cop running after a thief and getting on stairs and jumping over some projectiles etc. I think it was an Activision game. A little later i managed to convince my rich uncle to get me that magical NES device as a gift. I felt on top of the world and learned to play Super Mario Bros with one hand tied behind my back but it was quite a shock when a month later i went to another house and saw the Mega Drive and then the SNES inside the shops just shortly after. I especially realised my big mistake because i could have had the SNES if i played my cards right with the rich uncle but i was unware of it so i wasted my card on the NES. I did manage to alienate some of the pain by getting that Double Dragon goodness on my NES and an RPG that i can't for the life of me remember what was called or find and i am still happy i got to experience the NES.

does it work on pal models?
@whatskenmaking

The principles of the mod are the same for both PAL and NTSC, but they are different boards, so the exact steps I walked through here won’t work on the PAL board. You should be able to walk through the PAL schematic and apply the same principles I applied in this mod to get a similar result, though.
