I think I might have the "Fridge of Theseus." The question is, is it a 30-year-old fridge if none of its original parts is still included??
In this video, we have a shoptalk day as we repair our compressor sled side of our ship's refrigeration. We discuss various refrigeration issues along the way.
If you are interested in our high-efficiency marine AC units an haven't filled out the survey yet, here's a link to it forms.gle/Lsbok8NUzsUiWtm56. Filling this out will put you on the mailing list.
If you're interested the the tools and gear I like for refrigeration, check out that section of our amazon shop, here (affiliate link): amzn.to/3Ik5a5A

Your boat project demonstration videos are the BEST! Please make more!. One suggestion: It was almost impossible to see"your side" of the condenser unit, the sled, you were working on, except for a few moments using your handheld camera. On some other videos, Emily held a second camera to show "your side." Much better! Or, temporarily mount a second camera looking over your shoulder.

These videos take some of the consternation out of things and will allow us to attack these projects with more comfort and confidence. Many are switching to dormitory refrigerators due to issues with their built in units because it always seems to be a $1,000 to $2,000 fix when you call in a pro for what too often is only get a temporary fix that lasts just past their short warranty. A reminder on what refrigerant your using and if R134 how you convert to it if it isn't already 100% compatible would be nice. And yes hardware store silver solder especially if it already has flux in it can corrode very badly. I've lost a few rolls that had gone beyond the cleanable stage here in the Florida humidity. Best!

Aye m8’s and thnx for yet another good go-through vid. I’ve got one of these Waeco CoolFreeze aboard. It’s really tiny and I hope to be able to keep it small, also when I’m getting closer to your degrees. As for now I try, as much as possible, to go for food that can take some days without cooling. At the moment the whole boat has refrigeration temperatures but in some months it will change.

Yes, I think the projects are good as you generally have a fair amount of education in the process. I do like that expander tool, and at $17 it's a pretty good deal. I was wondering if it is appropriate to use a double flare on refrigeration or is that an automotive brake thing only. Keep the good stuff coming.

If you want to protect the area without wires and electric fans on melting, look into welding blankets, plumbers and AC techs use them when brazing and soldering around flammables and things they want to protect, especially when brazing copper. Do you run a vacuum before connecting everything up and then recharge the system?

Hello Clark and Emily. I just found you and I love the battery reviews. I am asking if you would do a tear-down review of the jsdsolar 12v 100ah lifepo4 battery. The few reviews that were there are all gone now. I own 4 of these and am thinking about buying 4 more, but I would like to see what you think of them. They are only $189.99 on amazon, so probably the least expensive battery you would have ever reviewed, for that size. I have 4 wired in series and parallel to make a 24v 200ah battery bank. P.S. I just love the boat life you guys share. 😎

Hi Clark, what are your thoughts on upgrading a 40 year old, R-12 system with a large holding plate?
@EmilyAndClark
@EmilyAndClark 5 месяцев назад
Probably time for a reboot. Holding plates only makes sense with an engine driven system and your compressor uses too much power. So it's probably cheaper to buy a kit or a bunch of parts and start over. I've used r-12 lub with 134a in a car and it worked fine but it's not recommended.

I see the dryer after the condenser and before the evaporator. If I followed correctly, the coolant will be in a liquid state. How does the dryer remove any moisture?
@EmilyAndClark
@EmilyAndClark 5 месяцев назад
It contains desiccant that absorbs water but not refrigerant. Sort of like silica beads packed with vitamins. They absorb water vapor but not nitrogen.
@gymcoachdon
@gymcoachdon 5 месяцев назад
I was curious if you were going to replace the filter/drier. How does one know? I am having issues with moisture in my system, and am contemplating adding a larger drier like you have installed.
@EmilyAndClark
@EmilyAndClark 5 месяцев назад
Changing your filter dryer will obviously absorb some water. But run your vacuum for literally hours. I sometimes run for an hour then let it sit on vacuum for a long time and vacuum again. If your pressure goes up you either have a leak or are making water vapor. Keep going until the pressure is stable over time. This procedure can recharge the dryer!! If in doubt I let this go overnight. After this letting just a whisp of gas in and vacuuming it out again might get those random water vapor molecules out.

@@EmilyAndClark I appreciate the quick reply. It was because of that series that I bought a vacuum pump and gauge set to fix the non functioning fridge on the boat I purchased. It will run for weeks, sometimes months, before going through a cycle of freezing up. A few minutes with the heat gun gets things gurgling again. I am curios if I should try to vacuum the system again without adding a new drier, or take the next step of new skills and sweat in the drier...
