Revolutionary Girl Utena Ep.38 - (SPOILER) Utena versus Akio

WARNING: MAJOR SPOILERS HERE
The duel between Akio Ohtori and Utena Tenjou in the second-to-last episode of Revolutionary Girl Utena.
It seems that cutting .mkvs in Windows Movie Maker removes the subtitles... Sorry for that. Although here it might be welcomed since this way nothing is spoiled. I uploaded this primarily to demonstrate RGU's splendid design, which is most prominently evident near the end of the series. The endlessly surreal battle arena, the almost orgasmic collapse of the castle... Simply amazing!

For those who don't know why Anthy backstabbed Utena, one explanation is that as soon as Utena said she'd become a prince for Anthy's sake, Anthy becomes afraid that she'll just go back to the situation that she's in with Akio as her prince. Though she's used to the pain of her position by now, the last thing she'd do is jump to another scenario that causes her even more pain. So she abandons the hope she placed in Utena and does as Akio wanted. This is why Utena's last attempt to free her worked out in the end, because she came to help Anthy as equals, as companions, not by playing a system created for domination and power.
@Sweat8686
@Sweat8686 7 лет назад
But in the end Utena is like "Guess I couldn't be a prince after all" so she was still trying to play prince while rescuing Himemiya...
@ellesig4708
@ellesig4708 7 лет назад
I always thought it was because Himemiya feared change, Utena always wanted to be a prince in so far as saving the princess but she never wanted to marry Himemiya and live happily ever after in a castle. She just wanted to free her from this sick fantasy world/life where Himemiya would have more control over her own life.

The perfect climax to the story. After watching the last episode, though, I assumed that Anthy was planning to betray Utena from the very beginning--even if she felt conflicted about it later in the series. She was probably never loyal to Utena and never expected her to be a "prince." Her loyalties were always with her brother, and Utena just refused to see what was going on. This is why there really couldn't have been a more satisfying climax to the series than this one. Anthy slowly reveals herself to Utena throughout the series, but Utena refuses to see both her pain and the manipulative things that she does. Finally, in one grand gesture, Anthy reveals herself fully by stabbing Utena. This also explains why Anthy tries to kill herself a few episodes back. Towards the end of the last arc, she's developed affection--maybe even love--for Utena, but she knows that she must betray her eventually, so she tries to kill herself to spare Utena.

I think that Anthy backstabbed utena because she didn't really believe that a woman could be strong enough to beat akio, he taught her to be as misogynist as he was, so she didn't really believe that utena could save her.
@bigfrogs4207
@bigfrogs4207 5 лет назад
i always thought that this moment, like many in the series, was internalized homophobia. if utena wins it would change everything, and even if you might be happy its terrifying and some primal part of you fears it because youve been taught to fear it your entire life. she stabbed utena because she loves her so much and that terrifies her, but if utena loses, all the abuse she’s suffered is justified, shes inferior and deserves all the swords in her back, and she can just sleep forever in her cozy coffin. thats why its important that anthy reaches back in the end, her finally setting aside her fear and accepting her love for utena, and for herself

Anthy’s actions here aren’t all that unusual. It’s very common for victims of abuse to become terrified at the notion of leaving the cycle, and even become aggressive towards those who try to help them. For them, an abusive relationship is the only relationship they’ve ever known, and they don’t want to lose that, especially with the pain they’re in.

"Why did Anthy stab Utena?" is the most common question anyone who has watched Utena asks. There are many different theories on that, but the most common answer is this: She did it out of fear and mistrust. The idea of being brought out of her coffin and the world she has lived in so long frightened her. The idea that Utena, a girl who's so innocent and naive, could become her prince while so many others had failed seemed impossible. Fear of the unknown was greater than her desire to be rescued.

@SirEriol
@SirEriol 3 года назад
@@Cloverfr Kiiiiiind of? Anthy _is_ the one who takes away his powers of Dios and locks them up to save his brother, but the people of the world saw this little girls as a witch and punished her with the Swords of Hatred. That's why she calls Akio's first meeting with Utena as his last act of selflessness and the first one of cruelty: he is worried about Anthy, but doesn't think he has anything to do with it. "She kinda deserves it", he thinks, "but she's still my sister". "I wish I could save her", he thinks, "but I can't because of her own actions". He makes sure somebody cares about her, being a good action, but he washes his hands and won't help Anthy himself, being an egoist act. Anthy takes away his power because she _does_ care. A Prince can only exist if he has no option and Princesses have no will. Dios has no power of his own, a Prince just takes power from others and ignores his own imprisonment. That's why Utena failing to become Anthy's prince is what revolutionizes the world: no one should aspire to be a Prince, nor to have one. Being selfless and thinking of yourself as such are entirely different actions. So, Anthy's impotence is Dios power. Akio has no regard for her kinda-her-own-curse sister, so he never considers Anthy's worth. That's his coffin: an adult seeing the world with the lies he was told as a child, instead of breaking the world's shell and embracing his own view. Utena wants Anthy, and more important, wants to help Anthy. So she uses her own hands after being stabbed and broken (her sword, which Akio broke without a care), and that desperation to stop Anthy's suffering is what brings them together. Anthy is there. And when Anthy is confounded at Utena's total disregard for her wounds and Anthys downright cruelty, Utena just reaches out. She offers her hand, and doing so is enough for making Anthy want to hold it. They do so, and therefore, even if it seems tragic, the arena collapses, a world destroyed. Utena knew about the Swords, That's the reason she becomes an adult: she acknowledges that adults are no better just for being older, and still makes an effort against their cynicism. And while she can no longer be in the garden where nobody dies, the freaking graveyard rosebush of Ohtori, now the studends start talking about leaving, and with each a foreshadowing of their own revolution. But Anthy now leaves. She held her hand, after all. Now it's her turn to go after her, and embrace each other in a world that has every card against them. Still, a hand is far more stronger than a sword, and capable of much more things. Akio plays around in his coffin, but if anyone is determined enough to do so, they too can break free and, someday, shine together.
@Louchan2
@Louchan2 12 лет назад
@modoloine Yes, there is a sense of love as she kisses Utena's shoulder, but in the end she didn't trust Utena enough to believe that she could truly save her, and she was too scared of the world that existed outside of her own coffin.

Woah I've just realized something. Utena's name in Japanese means either flower sepals or a pedestal (both very fitting to her character and the role she plays in the show). And when Anthy stabs Utena, at 4:21 the imagery looks strikingly similar to a rose, Anthy and her dress being pistil and petals, and Utena herself as a calyx.
@t1me2di3
@t1me2di3 7 лет назад
basically utena saying she will be a prince shows before akio and anthy eyes that she actually has the power to revolutionize the world. their formula they have. being that she is a girl, etc. this obviously freaks akio out when her statement causes the whole castle to crumble, and he his taken by surprise. anthy realizes utena infact might beat her brother. so thats why she chooses to stop it and backstab her.... anthy doesnt want to be a puppet rose bride but she feels she has no choice in the matter... later in the episode through utena and anthys last moments together anthy does get the strength to walk away from being the rose bride.

I've seen other characters in other shows have those types of 'betrayal' scenes. It's probably because the first time the viewer sees it its also shock value, because they now feel ambivalent toward this character. There's a lot of characters similar to Anthy who have done some really extreme things like this, but at the same time they are very tragic and have a good excuse. I totally get why Anthy did it. She made it quite clear in the next episode. Because the alternative was worse.

@TreneeJr Actually, I believe it was completely intentional. You'll remember that theatre is a major motif throughout the series, both in terms of the Shadow Girls and the revelation that nothing at Ohtori is "real" per se. Thus all the "wounds" are theatre wounds: Anthy stabs Utena through the side, Utena suffers no cuts in her duel with Touga but her dress gets shredded, and Saionji's attack to Touga's back just manages to slash his shirt. Ohtori is literally a giant stage.

I agree with your answer. It really DOES make sense. After all, Anthy even stated (right after the betrayal) that Utena reminded her of Dios but could never be her prince because she was a girl. I also think that Anthy felt divided between Akio and Utena. While she hated being the rose bride and wanted Utena to free her, she still cared for Akio, in spite of all the things he did to her. She knew she couldn't choose both, so she remained loyal to Akio, despite Utena being her friend.

And if the Rose Bride would to be saved somebody else would have to take her place as the target-as happened. If Utena would be unable to move she wouldn't be able to save Anthy and wouldn't get killed. After their talk after the jump this theory made most sense to me but the fear of unknown could count as well. Lp

+Dmithry Petrov There is a theory that Antiy is Utena that she has be abused to the point where she created an alter ego to fight to free herself from the exploitation of being the rose bride and her power and the sexual abuse she endures at the hands of her brother and other's in the movie Utena changes into a car which anthea and Utena use to shatter and break out of the academy. Anthy's power creates and mantain a dead system of rank and power which she is victim and Queen of Utena is shattered by her past and tying to fight her way out through theses battles. I think Anty and utena are not the same person but are two people who life and choices brought them together to create or destroy to free themselves and maybe other people equally trapped in the entropy of the false world of the academy.

Given the very end sequence of the TV series, it could also be that Utena does exist as a soulmate Anthy will meet in the future. Or rather, she is seeking someone like Utena and won't necessarily look like her.

I think Anthy and Utena are connected they bring the change together, but certain things were so cryptic it's never is answered clearly. But the connect between Utena and Anthy is clear when the real Anthy leaves to go find Utena in the "real world"

@modoloine But they wouldn't. The swords ignore the prince if the Rose Bride is present, and she was. And no, I don't see any look of love in Anthy's eyes. I see desperation, hopelessness, and a bit of malice.

With all due respect, I think that's a terrible way of looking at it. Femininity, romance and beauty do not hinder women, and if that was in any way part of the message the show tries to give us it would be completely anti-feminist. Yes, Anthy is a representation of female weakness, and Utena is the opposite. Utena tried to be as boyish as she could as she believed that's what makes a prince, but in the end this wasn't correct. What saved Anthy was Utena's strong heart, not lack of femininity.

Then that explains what the Revolution is for. It is the cycle of things that must and will happen over and over again, forever and ever. Ohtori is the nexus of that cycle, its to make sure that everyone within it never 'grows up' because Akio feels like he can only use the desires of children/adolescents to secure the Power of Dios. And he's right, because the world has been constructed on those idealisms/concepts....

continued... If someone were to walk in and say they don't have to play this game anymore, they would believe there's nothing outside the game. Because if the Apocalypse happens at Ohtori, it just means that they failed to 'grow up' and everything starts over. What truly lay beyond the rose gate was the 'real world', the light through the darkness. That was the world they lived in fear of, because it would mean they would suffer from their desires being truly unfulfilled/too much for them.

Hmm, lets see... What I think about Anthy's personality. She is overwhelmed with guilt and shame for her action of sealing Dios's power. Which is why she is enduring all the abuse. That's what everyone says. However... What if maybe she's just stubborn and refusing to give power to Akio because he used to give attention to others and not Anthy? Maybe Anthy liked how he is now playing attention to her. In this way, she is manipulative in a disturbing way. I don't really find her to be anyone's suitable partner to be honest. Even Utena. Don't feel like to encourage this sort of pairing unless Anthy gets some counselling help. I think most viewers don't see how Anthy may have destroyed Dios by taking away his powers. I don't think he was that abusive before. It was Anthy who was selfish and stripping him of his powers caused him to become Akio. The Swords of Hatred are like the haunted ghosts of those people who resent Anthy for sealing Dios powers because that was why Dios failed to save them or their daughters. After Anthy was saved by Utena, the Swords attacked Utena because they don't want Utena or anyone to take Dios powers. Dios powers belongs to him and him alone. The duel with Akio where Akio almost lost must have made the Swords aware of the danger of someone else taking Dios power. This may also be why Anthy stabbed Utena. Because she didn't wanted Utena to win. Because Anthy thought that knowing Utena's noble nature, Utena will be busy being the saviour and forget about her. That's why she stabbed her. Anthy likes to be in control and want to be the center of attention. She's as much as evil as Akio is accused of. In truth, Anthy is not that innocent. She has this wicked, selfish, immature side that I don't think anyone has noticed. I am surprised that no one I met have noticed this or maybe there are some people who share my opinion but they don't express them. There's also a chance that Anthy may have created the Swords of Hatred by her magic to attack anyone who dares unseal Dios's power. Keep in mind, it is because Akio keeps making Anthy do the duels and regain his powers is why Anthy gets attacked. What's happening is that Anthy's black magic has a side effect. The Swords will attack ANYONE, even the the person who cast the magic, if they try to break the seal. Maybe in the end when Akio was telling Utena to stop, he said so out of concern for her. Maybe Akio is not as evil as fans of this anime keep saying around.

@@blushingsigh Thinking more deeply, I realized that the people who stabbed Anthy were wrong. If they were that concerned about their daughters, they could have gone to help them together instead of sending one man to save all of them. We all have to help one another. It wouldn't be a good thing for Utena to become like that either. Maybe that's what Anthy doesn't wants.

@Gabriella Eller Of course she did it so that Himeko wouldn't suffer, I'm saying that the attitude and sadism she adopted during the duel was similar to Akio's persona throughout the show (definitely not during this duel though, but I can't help but juxtapose that look of shock they had when Utena came toward him and when she slashed the necklace off of Himeko respectively). I was just saying she acted in a similar manner that he did even if it was for a completely different reason.

Mia Everitt Akio: I'm not a Duelist. Unlike your previous duels, this is not a game. Utena: I've never once played at dueling! Akio: No. You only know the game. But if you do not put away your sword now, you will learn how terrifying true battle is. Utena: I won't lose to you! Akio: A child like you cannot understand my ideals. You fought for the rose bride without knowing why. (I think) Utena: What kind of ideals means you have to fool everyone in this room?! That's absurd! Akio: A child like you cannot grasp the value of this room. Utena: What IS the value of this room? It just continues Himemiya's suffering! Akio: She is the rose bride by her own will. There is no need for you to interfere. Anthy: I am the rose bride... from this day forward I am yours. Anthy: In truth I- Anthy: I'm sorry Utena-sama... I'm so sorry! Utena: I'm going to free Himemiya from you! Akio: Do you even know what you're saying? Utena: I do! I'll become a prince, right? Utena: Why.....? Himemiya....! Why....? *Gasps* (You're welcome.)

I just realised that Utena's name sounds like Athena. I wonder if her character is inspired by her. I would have thought Anthy was related to Demeter because of her love of gardening but it seems she is influenced by Aphrodite. Or maybe she's a mixture of both? Dios/Akio could be influenced by Zeus. Interesting how these characters must have been inspired by Greek Gods and Goddesses I wonder if the other duelist were inspired by other Greek Gods and Goddesses. Touga could be influenced by Ares Miki Apollo (his love for music) Juri may be influenced by Artemis. Nanami... Hera. So jealous and aggressive! Saionji... Probably Hephaustus. Anyway, I love this anime.
