I continue to appreciate your hard work to optimize an HT system. What is important when you make this kind of operation ? Be sure of your measurements, it means you have to repeat a second (third, fourth, till tenth if you want to be more confident) time the same configuration. Between each measurement of repeatability, unmount the setup. Like that you'll be able to check your error of measurements. The peak (you measure close to the couch) which go down like a comb filter activated come probably from the couch because it absorbs different frequencies. If you move the couch, it should affect the response curve. If not, try to find the root-cause to identify the element. Sometimes it comes from the room itself. Unfocus this step by step optimization with these measurements, what you'll discover with a long time ? An acoustic treatment is better than all EQ and the benefit can reach 10, 20dB on several frequencies and you won't pertubate the original signal of your recordings. To boost the low frequencies, damp correctly the room is the key point. One tip to finish : don't opposite the direction of waves or you'll get a "cancelling" phenomenom.

Your advice is sound. I agree with the repeating of measurements to be certain. I am in the early stages on my learning curve and far from done. I want to ensure that my approach is on track. My feeling is that comparative measurements which limit the number of variables is the way to go but if you know a better way I am open minded and willing to re-test. As you pointed out I have a lot of items such as the coach that absorb the sound but not in a controlled, thoughtful manner. So acoustic treatment using a science based approach would be better. As I have heard opposing guidance as to which strategies produce the best results I may simple need to experiment for myself using measurements to validate along with my own ears. Thanks for all your suggestions- Jon

I have dual SVS SB4000's and went through a very similar exercise with placement. Options are limited in my room but I was surprised how much difference phase alignment made. Still have work to do with the PEQ's but I have already managed to achieve a reasonably decent combined response. Thanks for another great video!

John - Glad to hear that you had success with phase alignment. That is my next step in my calibration journey and hope I will experience similar improvements. It seems you are following a similar order with PEQ coming after phase alignment. Thanks for sharing - that feedback helps me. -Jon

Unfortunately I'm restricted as to where my dual subwoofer configuration can be placed but that's where PEQ definitely saved the day. In the end I was able to get within ±3db from 20Hz-110Hz.

Rocco - Great news about how PEQ is able to make up for less than ideal placement. The +/-3db result you got is really good. Nice work! It gives me hope for my own calibration. -Jon

Does it matters if there is a deep at 150 hz don’t you use the subs below 120 hz?

Change the frequency range in REW to 10 Hz - 200 Hz when doing sweeps in the bass region, no use showing out to 20kHz
@ripewave
@ripewave 2 года назад
Good advice - with the range set to the bass frequency it will be possible to focus more on what is in its control. For integration with the standard speakers a broader range still makes sense to me.-Jon

I know it’s a stretch and definitely not ideal, I do not have a functioning computer, all 5 are dead LOL. If I could borrow a friends laptop, could I use the Audyssey mic for REW?
@ripewave
@ripewave 3 года назад
Dave, REW is available for Windows, MAC and Linux desktop operating systems - so you will need access to a computer. I don't believe there are options for mobile phone or tablets. You could use a microphone without a supported REW calibration file, but the results will be less accurate. You may be able to observe general issues - peaks and dips in relatively the same frequency range. I would imagine that would at least enable you to know if you are making improvements or getting worse. I tried to use an uncalibrated microphone at first, but I had trouble getting the gains right - but I didn't spend much time resolving as I had the UMIK-1 on order. It would be good to know how you make out. -Jon

@@ripewave I sewed the seed with SVS to incorporate REW into their subwoofer tuning app. ELAC is doing it with whatever room correction software they have. If SVS & REW teamed up to do this, it would be incredible! I would wager most of the people using the SVS app do not use REW. There are videos demonstrating ELACs auto room correction.

Dave, the more suppliers integrate support the stronger their solutions will be. The other item SVS needs to implement is support for multi-sub. Today I understand that SVS subs only calibrate independently and not as a pair or more. Until they support multi-sub REW will still have a place for larger deployments.-Jon

Were you time aligning the subs each time you moved them? You always need to delay/phase/time align the two subs. You will find that just tweaking the phase on one of them, you will ensure the combined output is fully doubling, rather than slightly summing or even subtracting - never mind... just caught the end of the video and you mention you will use the phasing in the next tweaks.

Phasing is particularly important when you are tuning two subs. You could optimize with each position you attempt to really know what each can achieve. However, the guidance I followed suggests that is not necessary for your rough placement. As I recall the idea is position them one at time and later test and calibrate them together and also with your main speakers - including phase alignment.-Jon

I currently suffer from terrible bass at my main listening position. And I only have one big sub. It's a dual opposed dual 18" sealed subwoofer from Power Sound Audio. While there's TOO MUCH bass in the rear quarter of the room, my main listening position is suffering through some nasty nulls. My sub is placed at the left front 1/4 position between my Left and Centre channel speakers. Doesn't matter where I place the sub, the response sucks at the main listening position. So My only option is to buy another sub at this stage which will set me back a lot of $$$ to get something similar to what I have.

It is certainly much harder to balance using a single sub. You certainly have enough cone area 18”x2 to pressurize most large rooms. It you also have other room challenges it becomes harder. Have you tried rotating the sub 90 degree - firing side to side vs front to back?-Jon

I'm sure you have acquired the MiniDsp HD by now...being able to measure with Rew is the diagnosis, but the MiniDsp is the actual treatment, 10 band peq plus 80 milliseconds of Delay is incredibly powerful, I have The flattest smoothest response that can be achieved, will email photos

Those subs are Big

They are big. I am fortunate to have found space in my room under tables to conceal their mass. They are also effortless and fast with punch slam as the source material requires.-Jon

I'm putting the same comment on all the subwoofer reviews on the internet . After recording bands for 30 years standard practice is to put the kick drum and the bass guitar in the middle. Therefore one subwoofer works just fine. However if I record an unconventional band and let's say they want the upright bass to be in the Left Channel and the drums to be in the right Channel and you only have one subwoofer you are not getting stereo Bass. Bass Can Be stereo just like if you had two big speakers with 12 inch woofers and no subwoofer . Get two put them outside of your main speakers. Enjoy stereo Bass

So good to get this feedback from a recording engineer (is that the right title?). While bass is less directional then higher frequencies, I can still tell when me subwoofer in the back of the room is running vs. the one in the front of the room. Your guidance to place OUTSIDE of the main speakers I also agree with. So many pictures of systems (including pictures on websites of speaker companies with subwoofers placed inside of the main speakers). If possible having 4 subwoofers is ideal for both directional (non LFE low frequencies) and filling the room equally with sound for LFE channel content. Thanks for sharing. -Jon
