I picked one of those up back when they first came out. Its a very smooth shaver. I never had a problem with water spots or rust, i cant imagine anyone would unless they really really neglected it, 316L as you know is marine grade stainless meaning its made to stand up to salt water conditions. A good tip after rinsing it post shave is that a Q-tip actually fits perfectly down the shaft of the handle to remove any excess water drips and help dry it out.

@@JonBonesJones84 i usually use it on the highest setting for the first pass then knock it down to about 3 for the second. I would say even on the highest setting its very smooth and feels pretty tame while being extremely efficient compared to other adjustables. Its a luxury item in my opinion. You can get just as good a shave with say the new parker semi slant at $30 but with a little care the rex is a forever razor where as the parker may or may not be. It is worth the hefty price tag if you have the extra funds for it.

I got one of these razors recently. It's a fantastic razor, that shaves as good as it looks. It's very efficient even on the lower numbers. Out of all my razors, I get the closest shaves consistently with this one, and it even beats my R41 in this respect.

Got mine today and you’re the first to mention the R41. That’s my go to razor. I can throw. Feather in that and go all day. Today I tested the Rex’s limits with a feather. I truly believe the Rex at the highest setting is more aggressive. I was kind of nervous using it. Quite a few nicks and the alum told me a story. I won’t use a 6 for awhile, nor do I think I will need to. Beautiful razor though. Can’t wait to tame her.

Very stylish and attractive razor. The stainless steel finish is my top attraction here. As is the adjustable facility in the Rex. Alas, it is rather too pricey as well. I saw this at two different retailers at $240-$249. Will check out shavenation for the price. I really want it a lot. Currently my clear favourite among my 7 safety razors is the Rockwell 6S. I have a feeling this Rex might rival it for my affection very soon.

Here's a thought for a tutorial: I'm on dialysis and have sensitive, dry skin due to my illness. I have the necessary shave soaps, pre-shaves and balms, but is there a way to shave (or pre-shave) that reduces the chances of skin irritation? I really like to shave, but this skin condition maks it difficult to do it on a daily basis as I was used to doing.

I know I ain't Geo, but I might be able to offer some insight. The type of shave you get comes down to lots of variables, but I think the most important one is getting the right aggression for your hair. Something you might want to look into if you haven't yet is an adjustable razor. It doesn't have to be a fancy $250 one like this Rex Ambassador in the video, there are much cheaper options out there that are good too. I honestly believe that it's entirely possible to end up with a razor that is almost "too mild". My hair for example is extremely coarse. I started with a fairly mild razor, the EJ DE89. Great little razor, but I still had trouble with razorburn. Leagues lower than what I dealt with when using cartridges, but not quite the "smooth experience" I was expecting. I eventually discovered I needed a VERY aggressive razor just to cut through my day old stubble without suffering from irritation and razor burn, which seems counter-intuitive but makes sense if you understand how razor aggression actually influences the shave. In my particular instance, I was still having issues with razorburn and irritation on the DE89 because it was too mild. Even if I loaded it with insanely aggressive blades, the razorburn still persisted. I believe I had this issue because the razor wasn't exposing enough of the blade to my skin. So instead of the blade cutting through hair, it was either skipping the hair entirely and just scraping over my skin, or it was grabbing a hair every once in awhile and pulling it. Once I switched to something more aggressive, that problem went away in a single stroke. It was like night and day, and comfort was through the roof. So I suggest you try picking up an adjustable razor, just to find out what kind of aggression you really need for your hair. You can pick up something cheap, like the Parker Variant, or go even cheaper and pick up a Weishi adjustable. I personally haven't used the Weishi one, but I've heard surprisingly great things about it. With something like that, you can very easily discover what kind of aggression is right for you and go from there.

@spartan456
@spartan456 5 лет назад
Rex Supply is a separate company from Razor Emporium, but they are ran by the same people. You can find confirmation here in this brief interview/review of the Ambassador: sharpologist.com/2018/01/rex-ambassador-adjustable-razor.html Specific quote: Mantic59: Why are you selling the Ambassador through the “Rex” brand instead of Razor Emporium? Matt: “The idea of producing a safety razor has been something on my mind for nearly a decade. However, a decision to build a company rather than a razor model was also made years ago. REX is a company and brand outside of Razor Emporium that can develop on it’s own and encompass various men’s grooming products from safety razors and other hardware to soaps and aftershaves. We will soon be releasing a line of hand-ground straight razors, shaving soap, razor stands and hand-finished strops - all of which will be made in house. We’re excited to have this forthcoming line of shaving products, including the Ambassador, in stores both online and brick and mortar in 2018. “The name ‘REX’ had many meanings when we chose it. Formally, it stands for Revisit Excellent. It Latin, it means King. But to me, it means Razor Emporium eXperience. After years of retailing, repairing, and collecting razors, I feel it’s only the next evolution. We want to incorporate the best from the past and present and provide a line of products that make you feel like a king in your bathroom. Grooming can be fun or it can be a chore. We want to help men everywhere get the best shaves possible - and we want to create high quality products that aim to do so.”

I really like the design. A great looking razor. But for the money it costs, you could buy 5 or 6 very good razors. I know that it will last a lifetime but I don’t think that the price is justified. You can buy a merkur futur or a merkur progress which just as well made. But it’s your own choice I guess.

This is a high quality adjustable razor -- no arguments. But I have to say, it still falls short in comparison to Gillette's '50s & '60s TTO adjustables Fat and Slim Boys. The Rex Ambassador is more than a glorified Merkur Progress (M.Progress itself being no nonsense razor by any means), but the Ambassador is no TTO adjustable. There is no sophisticated mechanism to this razor with the flaps mechanically opening/closing, as the Slim/Fat Gillettes' do. Nor does the Ambassador have the clicking, mechanical sounding adjustment of aggression the Gillettes do. It is 2019, some 60+ yrs since Gillette produced its iconic adjustables, we have these days the means of easy, very precise (and probably cheaper) manufacturing that back in the '50s they could only imagine in sci-fi fiction books and cinematography, but we *still* cannot produce what Gillette could only 15, 20 yrs after the end of World War II! I have no doubt the Rex Ambassador is/will become a classic, but what Gillette was creating on the adjustable DE razor front all those yrs ago has not yet been matched, never mind surpassed.
@ktheodor3968
@ktheodor3968 5 лет назад
@@Jasonaudym Thanks Jason. I have yet to come across one traditional wet shaver who equally and simultaneously finds that none of Gillette's adjustables (Fat Boy, Slim, Black Beauty) do anything for him or that he positively doesn't like any of them. By far for most wet shavers, it's just that one (say the Fat Boy) may not work for him thus leaving at least one of the other two Gillette adjustables (or both Slim, Black Beauty) as very much liked and very much sought after. And the Gillette adjustables, factually, are very much sought after, selling for quite high prices despite being antiques nearly 20 yrs into the 21st century. Most shavers who own any of the Gillettes use them. I agree with you that Gillette was at the time (still is -- whoever owns what goes by the name "Gillette" these days) a massive company to afford to make quality products. Today though we have technologies (lasers for dead sharp accurate cutting, computer monitors for digital graphic reproduction, toying with the ergonomics/looks of the DE razor well before mass production, etc., etc., ..) which back in the '50s, '60s they could only dream in their sci-fi dreams....and yet, and yet we still can't achieve what Gillette could all those decades ago. The closest we've come in our time to replicating any of Gillette's adjustables (TTO) has been Rockwell's T razor, and that has had some "issues" to put it mildly. I should though reiterate what I've already said: the Rex Ambassador is a classic for what it is and very lucky anyone who comes to own it.
@ktheodor3968
@ktheodor3968 5 лет назад
@@Jasonaudym Thought you said: "The fatboy is iconic, but as far as shaving goes its nothing spectacular." To which I simply said, I've yet to come across a single shaver who is equally unimpressed by all three of Gillettes adjustables: Fat, Slim Boys and Black Beauty. You seem to focus, exclusively, on the fat boy whilst Gillette has done 2 other adjustables and which to this day are keenly sought after. I don't know why you focus on the fat boy so much. You also said: "The mechanicals could certainly be replicated" Clearly, Rockwell's T razor hasn't come through with flying colours. No matter though...do enjoy your shaves Jason...that's what matters.
