Is RF energy harvesting viable to power an IoT sensor?
Vast armies of sensors are crucial to feeding IIoT monitoring and analysis applications. Powering these edge nodes is increasingly a channel. Even though modern microcontrollers exhibit ultra-low power consumption characteristics, a battery would need to be replaced at some stage, the total cost of which is typically more than the sensor. Provisioning line/mains power infrastructure is equally expensive.
How about energy harvesting? Could this provide a viable power source? What about harvesting ambient RF energy?
In this video, we investigate the potential for powering IIoT sensors using this approach.

Im very interested in this technology I studied Energy engineering and I find this to be a great way to go.

You must have not studied very well because this is completely impractical because of ..... basic physics. A WiFi transmitter has a maximum legal power rating of 5W so it you got 100% efficient transfer (you won't not even close) the most energy you could harvest is 5 watts. An antenna with gain doesn't increase the received power because antenna gain is measured against a 1/4 W vertical (which isn't very efficient) ...... Even with 100% transfer (impossible) you aren't going to get more than the 5 watts the transmitter puts out.

Sorry I didn’t explain myself properly, I meant to say I study renewable energy but during my school I didn’t saw this topic and I find it interesting, 2 years ago in CES Las Vegas I think it was Samsung that introduced a power control for a TV that recharges from the sun and from the WiFi, or at least they say, so that’s when I started interested in this topic, now that you’re saying this it makes sense sense it can only powered a small (very small) device, I hope some day this can be an alternative

What is you put 1000 receivers each capable of receiving 5W and combine the output? give it a try and you’ll be surprised ;)

Hey, thanks for sharing your hard earned knowledge with me. I do appreciate this very much. (QUESTION) Would you have problems designing and building a (BOOST CIRCUIT) like the simple (LOULE THIEF)? Then running this Scavenged Power through a Small (TRANSFORMOR) to a larger (TRANSFORMOR) to Enhance the build up of enough (CURRENT) and (VOLTAGE) to Power even larger (CIRCUITS)? Also, wouldn't you have far better power, 'if you were to design and build a (ANTENNA ARRAY) finely tuning it to the desired Radio Signals? I'm just asking. Tring to learn all I can, before age destroys my mind. Again, thanks for the knowledge upload.

Very interesting I read about rf cooking. And some chap in Africa apparently made a car and TV run off this type of technology?

The chap is from Zimbabwe. His name is Maxwell Chikumbutso. He didn't just power TV, electric cars and houses from RF, He even created a plane that runs on RF Energy. This is the future free n clean energy!
