Time to create some the virgin Chuck Schuldiner vs the chad Trey Azagthoth memes. Also, Illud was released by that weird impostors "Evil D and the Radicunts"
Trey didn't do vocals on Heretic, but it's understandable why you and many others thought maybe he did...he did vocals on Invocation and Covenant from the Formulas album, and Secured Limitations from the Gateways album 🎉
Man, this is my favourite metal channel on youtube. I've been watching a lot of episodes by now and I really appreaciate the sense of humor that you use. I hope the channel reach more people because it's some damn good Cheers.
I’m an old school Morbid fanatic, Heretic is the album I return to the most. It just checks all the boxes for me. Production wise I can blast it all day and not get ear fatigue. I would have loved to hear the bass playing better but the guitars are perfect. The drums are sharp and punchy. The synergy between the guitars and drums are at its zenith here. Vocally it covers a lot of ground with the lows to highs. I don’t care what the general consensus is, this is Morbid at its finest.
Putting Heretic above Gateways is a searing take, definitely. Of Lucifer and Lightning is a bit of a similar album in Angelcorpse’s discog, especially productionwise.
Heretic is a monster of an album, i wouldn't change it. listening on headphones really brings out the interactions between the rhythm and lead guitars on the left and right audio channels.
I have a musical project in the works and this just gave me a lot of food for thought, so I guess Heretic will influence something even after all this time. I love this channel, finally someone on RU-vid has something interesting to say about metal. Many thanks, pilgrim.
Agree ( except for the Gateways dissing). Complete acid guitar work on this album. A follow up that really merges the Gateways and Heretic sounds/ideas would be incredible
I hope Trey can one day regain the spirit he had of wanting to dominate his contemporaries, you could hear he was trying to push forward and experiment with new releases like Heretic. Sure, not everything landed perfectly but that spirit of competition really propelled him forward musically, he's works have been ahead of the curve even now. Nowadays competition musically seems to be frowned upon in the metal sphere, and we're all supposed to "just let others be others" or somthin' idk.
The first time I listened to Covenant the “bow to me” bit was a major stop and do some soul searching moment. I even played the whole album over several times to make sure I didn’t miss anything else equally dumb. Then when I got to Domination I was like,” Oh, that’s where they put all the dumb stuff.”
Gateways rules, the atmosphere of this album is unmatchable, it's a constant intimidating driving force of controlled chaos, the climax being the final track God of the Forsaken when all is being disintegrated in to the void.
Incredible and overlooked album, especially in retrospect. I really wish Trey and co. had cranked out another album with this lineup in ‘04-‘05, as Vincent’s return caused everyone to immeasurably and permanently lose the plot. A whole album of the freaky stuff on Beneath the Hollow or God of Our Own Divinity would’ve been perfect. Mithras/Sarpanitun pick up the slack for MA a bit but it’s not the same.
I’m so glad I’m not alone in thinking Heretic is a hidden gem and that Domination is an overrated album. Gateways however is in my Top 3 though it is my least favorite of the Tucker albums. For me Formulas > Heretic > Gateways
Formulas has one weakness, too many lyrics so that Tucker tries to spit them out way to fast. Can't hate on Gateways because of the cool contrast between Trey solos and more melodic Eric Rutan solos. Also, Trey kills it with that solo in secured limitations and his raspy vocals on that one are really good too. I'd love to watch anime and talk about waifus with Trey.
100% agree with you, heteric has some really awesome creative stuff and gateways paved the way for bands like Gojira and Mithras, but formulas tops them all. Domination is total overrated tho
I'm kinda boring with my Morbid Angel preferences, my favorites are the ABC albums and Formulas. I do think Heretic is one of their most interesting albums though.
Awesome video but I can't help but noticing you didn't mention abomination of desolation, I know Trey doesn't like to acknowledge it but personally I love it.
Heretic is criminally underrated. Some riffs are absolutely filthy, heavy dissonant delightful riffs… Vocals are so heinous too. Also I’M BEGGING YOU go listen to « Secured Limitations » from Gateways, it is an absolute Masterpiece!! The solo in their is Trey’s greatest offering to the Ancient Ones, truly possessed, a Legendary solo (that was even isolated as a separate track late in the bonus tracks of the album. Mythical Solo, Trey’s Peak)
I'm with ya...I was stoked when it came out and read review after review about how it sucked....I still love it today..fatals this and then gateways for me.....
1. Domination is amazing, especially Hatework. Hate Forest even made a whole album in the style of Hatework. 2. The whole premise of Drum Check is just so goofy that it messes up the atmosphere of the album. If it was an atmospheric percussive track then fine, but not some dumb studio joke. Otherwise yeah, great album. I remember when Enshrined by Grace was put out as an advance track, everyone thought MA had gone nu metal.
Damn, Jiub, you really went hard in on Gateways to Annihilation lol. Anyways I really need to check Heretic out now. The songs you reviewed sounded awesome, very unique even for Morbid Angel standars. I guess I shouldn't trust Metal Archives reviewers when it comes to later albums by legendary bands lol.
I do have to exaggerate stuff a bit for comedic intent. Inquisition (Burn with Me) and Caesar's Palace off Domination have some parts I like. I saw some old interview from the Blessed Are the Sick era where Trey is screwing around with themes from those songs walking around playing guitar in the background while Dave is talking.
Many people didn't like this album because of the thin sound yet there's some absolute genius ideas going on all throughout it. The close minded "gate keepers" can f*ck off on this one. This album had things in it that are extremely memorable. Hard to say the same for most other albums. Edit: There was a certain other band that went completely next level worshiping this album but I can't recall the name of it. The album was brilliant. I think it was a French band. Not Mithras.
Glad I'm not the only one who doesn't care for Gateways. It's the reason I never checked out Heretic, because I thought that Gateways was the falling off point.
