If you haven't heard Autopsy... well, this is where any normal butthead would berate you, but I'm a nice guy, so I did an episode on them that'll hopefully introduce some new people to the band. This one's about their early stuff, but Part II about their later albums is waiting in the wings!
I do some podcasts...
This one is pretty famous, and it's got good jokes:
hatebus.libsyn...
This one is up-and-coming, and it also has good jokes:
audio.nobodyha...
Also it's got a live stream, usually on Fridays so come say hi:

This one is about metal:

It also has a live stream, usually on Fridays or Saturdays:

A friend once described Autopsy by saying they didn't play death metal they played what thru thought the term death metal would sound like. That statement always stuck with me. Also Chris cited Pentagram, Saint Vitus and Trouble as influrnces and it's really noticeable in their style especially on Mental Funeral.

I agree with your last statement with elitists only liking the first 2 albums but Acts of the Unspeakable was such a sick album too. That one is my fav Autopsy releases

Charred Remains might be the greatest, darkest Death Metal track of all time IMHO… pulverized me when I first heard it aged 15, still drives me crazy 26 years later

Autopsy is among the first death metal bands I heard. After listening to Slowly we rot and Black winter day, Mental funeral was on a whole different level.

Honestly, the crust punk influence on Swedish Death metal gets often blown out of the water. Just look at the cool december moon demo from Morbid. Really cool stuff for 1987 and mainly metal influences, very little crust influence, if any. Also Autopsy and Slaughter, like you mentioned. The whole Crust thing seems to be a bit of revisionism done by a few of the bands who were into it.

Interesting comment! You might be right, but as a dude born in the golden age of metal, one of the youngest in my family with an older sibling and older cousins born in the late 60s - mid 70s (the mostly generation mostly responsible for spawning the extreme metal genres), I can remember times when the purely heavy metal hard rock guys rejected the screaming and growling vocals and chaotic riffs and drums. Even King Diamond rejected to produce Bulldozer's full length album because it was according to him too punk sounding. I would argue that the punk influence, not necessarily crust, but punk rock and hardcore punk before crust, was already ingrained in speed/thrash metal starting in the late 70s/early 80s, before crust and death metal. Autopsy was definitely rocking GBH shirts in photos and I can certainly hear the punk influences in the intensity of their delivery. I agree that sometimes it does get overblown, but I can remember pre internet heavy metal guys and girls who loved Sabbath, Priest, Maiden, etc., but couldn't stand death metal, and I gotta wonder: if these early extreme metal pioneers didn't borrow from the heavy metal classics AND marry that with the extremity of underground punk scenes, would death metal even exist? I don't believe so, and that's why I think it is not overblown at all, and if anything often understated. Interesting point though, and you got me thinking and remembering haha! Cheers dude!

Still need to listen to Autopsy. You see the controversy that happened with the kpop girl group, Gfriend? One of their members got in trouble for throwing up a Roman Salute and posing with a NatSoc statue no joke.

Enjoy that death-doom stuff, for me at least it sounds the most dead of death metal even if it isn't as aggressive. Now when I listen to early Darkthrone I'm going to be thinking about Autopsy.
