BOOOOOOOO it's not October but this band's spooky enough to shift time and space into starting Halloween early! They're one of the best modern black metal bands, and hopefully this episode will convince you of that in 20 minutes or less...

I always lean towards Haxan as my favorite. It has that rotten sound, extremely archaic and reminds me of the early Necromantia demos. Also, the Mortuary Drape influence was more abundant on that one. Henbane took it to another level, incredible, and it helped by the participation of Nameless Void from Negative Plane. Great fucking video as always.

I love how the dweebs now think that orthodox black metal refers to 72 different Batuska's currently active, with their singing about the jesus and the cryillic alaphabet and all that jazz. Ive known about CDG for a long time, but i think i mentally categorised them as crappy modern BM without ever hearing them. Thanks for enlightening me RFI

Nice episode. Absolutely loved Coven and Henbane. Love that bass driven approach of the more occult oriented black metal bands. Nice Amon Goeth reference top, love The Worship but never noticed the similarities between that and CDG

Great episode. Henbane is definitely one of my favourite records. The vocalist "Mark of the Devil" is in another band called Sodality that released a new record this year called Benediction I. It's not as good as CdG's stuff, but it's worth checking out. The vocal performance is great, as you'd expect.

Funny you bring up heavy metal influence, there seems to be more of those bands coming out nowadays. The main band on our label Ulvehiet seems to be getting some more traction, as well as the two guys from that project have another project called Nachtoter which sounds like some crossover between Grausamkeit and some the Swedish bands. Would be worth checking out.

Coven is my favourite by them. Riffs are the best there and the album profits of being long because there is more time to enjoy them. I like you mentioned Head of the Demon. My favourite band l've found as similar to GdG in the Metal Archives. Even own their merch.

Most of the job in CDG doing vocals, Mark of the devil has incredible variety of vocals and if you add great evil riffs, you get real ritual black metal. My favorites are Haxan and Spectres over transylvania EP, both have really crazy dark evil wood atmosphere 😈

(New attempt) Credit where credit is due, Cultes des Ghoules is indeed commendable for an post-00's metal band with a genuine distinct identity, thanks to their own sense of melody & tonality plus having the proper riffs to back it up. 'Henbane' is indeed worthy of the praise, but I did initially felt the same 'disappointment' with 'Coven...'. It has been years since my last spin tho. 15:11 Now that you brought up Univers Zéro, I'm definitely intrigued to give this record an re-evaluation. Had a massive epiphany for Hérésie during the start of the quarantine days & I'm definetly gonna give it another spin with this in mind. Thanks for the intel. 12:28 vast soundscapes with a monolithic scope in pure emotive force backed by elite riffage through the spectral sons of the Mictlan Daniel Corchado & Julio Viterbo? Don't mind if I do. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) Respect the prolific grind & hails to the niche king. (apologies in advance for the potential spam, can't seem to see my own comments for some reason)

Speaking of Cultes des Ghoules, vocalist 'Mark of the D.' has done backing vocals for Lvcifyre. Their blackened & viscous take of Morbid Angel riffage lead to the best MA album 2011 (low hanging fruit, I know) with 'The Calling Depths'. Hell, one of the most spun recent 'straight forward' riff-heavy onslaughts of the past three years was 'The Broken Seal'. Any thoughts on Lvcifyre? When it comes to blackened onslaughts of vicious riffage, do you happen to be familiair with the following bands as well: - Varathron's Patriarchs of Evil - Sorhin's 'Apokalypsens ängel' - Unaussprechlichen Kulten's 'Keziah Lilith Medea (Chapter X)' - Weapon's 'From the Devil's Tomb' - Beyond's 'Fatal Power of Death' - Omegavortex' 'B.A.S.' 08:51 Damn, for once, we gotta keep it at a respectful agree to an severe disagree (that over-utilized anchored foot note & the resulting timid, safe & lifeless output has been a net negative influence for black metal these days) (still in jest mate) Respect the prolific grind & hails to the niche king. (apologies in advance for the potential spam, can't seem to see my own comments for some reason)
@radiofreeinnsmouth1337
@radiofreeinnsmouth1337 Год назад
Nice, I can finally see your comment now! Univers Zero is indeed pretty great, I like Hérésie a lot but my favorite from them is Ceux du Dehors. Patriarchs of Evil is actually one of my favorite Varathron albums after His Majesty at the Swamp, I listen to "Tenebrous" at the gym a lot. That Sorhin album's an all time classic, really unique stuff, maybe the best elaboration on that sort of Dissection template apart from the first Sacramentum album. The only Unaussprechlichen Kulten I've heard is Wake Up in the Night of Walpurgis but that's definitely a good one, still have to check their other stuff out. Funnily enough, I think that's the one Weapon album I haven't heard. I like their stuff but have to listen to them more to really get a handle on their sound. The last two I'm not really familiar with, will have to check them out as well.

That « all one riff » in Sinister is fabulous. Total Satanic Worship. Just like on Henbane, keyboards were played by the dude from Negative Plane Nameless Void. That’s also why the keyboad parts in Henbane & Sinister are just so on point. So simple yet so potent, adding an impense occult depth to CdG.

Curious, what do you think about striborg? Have you thought about making a video on that band? I like to compare them to forest because they both try to mimic the same elements in nature with their music but sound completely different, despite sharing similar artistic concepts. I also like how he blends bm with ambient especially on albums like mysterious semblance and ghost woodlands.

I do like Striborg but I have to be in the mood for it. Ghostwoodlands is definitely a good one, and I also like Nefaria and Embittered Darkness a lot. Apparently he's gone in a more electronic direction lately but I haven't head much of the newer stuff. So many albums! I'd have to listen to way more to get an episode done.

Black metal with strong occult themes really connect with wrathful paganism which I find a lot more attractive than those with theistic satanism in the abrahamic sense. Bitching and moaning about god is all fine and good, but it's like a long worn path at times. Pretty big fan of CdG with maybe a few exceptions, but at their heart they really hit the right vibe.

I definitely like a lot of that Temple of Fullmoon stuff. I've actually been really into Xantotol lately speaking of that scene. I find a lot of the doomier side of Polish black metal to be interesting since I kind of missed it back in the day and mostly just focused on Graveland and Veles. Specifically thinking of bands like Xantotol, Pandemonium, Sauron, Holy Death and Christ Denied here. I also want to do one on the really pretty sounding stuff like My Infinite Kingdom and Thy Worshiper at some point.

I can see it now, Intro with that ambient, ponderous synth and each subsequent track has Jdawg, King Cobra, Soprano and Good Fellas samples. Maybe throw in an "Aw, geez dude!" Outro is just an orgy of Japanese women ending with that "Wow!" sound ala O Agios Pethane and To the Depths in Degradation. Whatever the fuck that is. Everything else in between is vile, six-stringed sorcery from the utter depths of abject madness.
