Holy Records is a record label from France that's been putting out some of the most bizarre metal since 1992, helmed by the vision of S.A.S. de l'Argilière, whom you can thank for Septic Flesh, Nightfall, Supuration, and so many other indescribable masterpieces, and this episode covers some of my favorite underrecognized releases on the label (Misanthrope, Yearning, On Thorns I Lay, and Tristitia to be specific).

Been meaning to listen to Tristitia for a while now, and now I'm absolutely obsessed with this album. What an amazing gem, scratches the itch I have for stuff similar to the early Katatonia/October Tide stuff for sure (which is sadly very far and few between, as the only other things I've really found that really come close are In Ruins - Four Seasons of Grey and Paragon of Beauty's Seraphine). Thanks!

They had very interesting varied roster with some obscure gems (like Godsend, Tristitia) and some future monsters (Septic Flesh, Nightfall, On Thorns I Lay, Orphaned Land). Thanks for the episode 👍🏻

Thanks for the rundown of the bands, I wasn't familiar with most except Nightfall. Surprised you didn't cover this, but the only band from Holy Records I owned was Gloomy Grim. Lol. Kind of cheesy but I enjoyed it as my teenage self, the kind of ironic and comic take on black metal. Agathon also died almost two years ago. RIP. I guess I can see how their sound also fit on the bill with the rest of these.

I remember seeing the Gloomy Grim guy on one of those old Bill Zebub DVDs running around the pit at their shows with a chainsaw. Definitely some fun goofball black metal stuff.

@@radiofreeinnsmouth1337 check out Gloomy Grim's song "Blood" it pretty much captures that perfectly, if you don't like it or don't get it you will not like Gloomy Grim. "Life?" album had it's moments too. I kind of stopped keeping track of them after that album. I used to watch Bill Zebub. His interviews with bands were interesting at times. I remember when he was interviewing Mika Luttinen from Impaled where he was making an allegory of why Sweden's metal doesn't have much innovation, saying that lets build a bridge from Finland to Norway, and then go on top of the bridge and throw all the garbage in the middle into Sweden, just hilarious stuff, and his Spooked movie - as you wake up as a black guy nightmare was hilarious. I keep trying to find a digital copy or a DVD but not sure where to get one at this point, but I still remember it.

All the bands on that catalog were, and are, amazing. Some of the best metal of the 90's

Very cool topic choice, I can't agree with you more, it was a very important label for a lot of teenage people growing up in France, and as you show, in other places as well. Yearning and OTIL are very good stuff indeed and albums that have stood the test of time. With tragedies adorned is a cult album, Orama is as well.

Since you seem to like genre blending and weird stuff with equally weird lyrics and vocals, how about an episode on Dream Death or Goatlord?

I don't know how much I'd have to say about Goatlord, maybe might work as part of a combo with Doom Snake Cult, who I like a little more. Dream Death is definitely great stuff as well.

Never heard of this band, cool episode. On an unrelated note whats the name of the channel of that JJ dude that you guys talk about on HB? I need to see that highly regarded mutant for myself.

That's Gothic Metal Maniac. Channel is here: www.youtube.com/@gothicmetalmaniac7424 but he hasn't done anything with it in forever. If you look up jessejamesthompson59 on TikTok, that's where he puts out stuff now, but it's all just him pointing at bible verses and being lame.

Holy smokes, that's a lot of names! I certainly have plenty of stuff to check out over the next few days. I have a big soft spot for stuff that sounds like early Rotting Christ. To me, it's like the proper evolution of the more melodic NWOBHM or more primitive power metal stuff from the early 80's into an extreme metal context. But speaking of the early 80's (cool transition, right?), do you like the "band" Piledriver? I figured you would have at least enjoyed the second Piledriver album, since you made that whole episode on Exorcist and whatnot (Original Sin is pretty dank too if you ask me). I also think that both Piledriver and Exorcist were both equally influential on the emerging death metal scene at large, since both Nightmare Theater and Metal Inquisition were heavy as fuck for their respective time periods. Anyway, great work as per usual!
@radiofreeinnsmouth1337
@radiofreeinnsmouth1337 4 месяца назад
Yup, I like that second Piledriver album a lot. It pretty much sounds like a follow-up to Exorcist, at least as far as the instrumentals go, just like Original Sin. I don't really know their other album as well but it seemed good the few times I listened to it.
