After more than five decades, California's parole board has recommended that Sen. Robert F. Kennedy's assassin, Sirhan Sirhan, now 77, be granted parole from his life sentence. Correspondent Lee Cowan talks with Kerry and Chris Kennedy, who are adamantly opposed to giving their father's killer his freedom.

Assassinated is the word. struck down seems too mild. I was a kid and I still grieve the assassination of President Kennedy and Senator Kennedy. The trauma is still with me. Those assassinations wiped out the hope of a better country and we can clearly see the result now.

I was nine when when JFK was assassinated so I didn’t really grasp the enormity of his death. It was different with RFK. I was so excited that he was running for president and most likely would get elected. I heard about his death while walking to my junior high and listening to my transistor radio. It was heartbreaking.

Yes, the loss of Robert Kennedy meant the loss of hope for our country. An excused death sentence should warrant a more serious life sentence. I don’t think he should be released if he still denies the crime.

@@grumpyoldlady_rants He would not of "most likely" gotten elected in '68, even if he managed to win the Democratic nomination. Nixon would have been at least a 2-1 betting favorite vs RFK, as it was an unfavorable spot for the Dems in the '68 election, which was why Nixon won so easily. RFK would have ended up similar to Teddy, being an embarrassment and probably impregnating one of his many mistresses he had.

For all the what-if’s, fame, promise, etc that is overwhelmingly(and justifiably) associated with John F Kennedy, to me the assassination of Robert Kennedy was the bigger loss in terms of the type of man he was and his vision for the future of this country. He gets nowhere near the reverence and admiration he deserves. The impromptu and completely unrehearsed speech he gave the night that Martin Luther King was assassinated Is still one of the most remarkable things I’ve ever seen and heard in the entirety of American history

I honestly don't think Gavin Newsome will allow his release. I think it would be deemed an overall unpopular opinion and if it is one thing politicians do is follow the way of what the majority wants as it secures future election hopes. Besides, Newsome has said that RFK was one of his heroes, so there's that. Also, I think that he would agree that an act so egregious deserves life in prison as he denied Leslie Van Houton's (one of the Manson cult followers) release twice already. It is not about the age of the criminal and if they would still be a danger to society IMO, it is about receiving a fit punishment for a horrific crime and life in prison is fit. It also is a disadvantage that Sirhan killed a high profile political figure from a prominent family who was pretty well loved by most. I personally take issue with the fact that after all these years Sirhan refuses to take responsibility. That should have been a dealbreaker for him even being considered for parole IMO.

Have lived in Kennedy country, liberal MA for decades and also lived in NYC and saw beloved Bobby just 3 months before his assassination in the St. Patrick's Day parade on 5th Ave. He walked right pass me and I was blown away his energy and that famous Kennedy charisma and his twinkling baby blue Irish eyes and megawatt Kennedy smile has stayed with me ever since then! My husband also campaigned for Bobby. He's still missed by so many and would have been a great president. He had a keen intellect and much compassion for those less fortunate, may he rest in peace. As the coroner testified, the fatal shot came _from behind_ and from close enough to leave powder burns. Sirhan fired from in front and never got within 3 or 4 feet of Kennedy. Photos taken during the shooting by a young man whose camera was seized by the authorities have never been published - probably destroyed. Parts of the door frame which contained bullet holes showing that more shots were fired than Sirhan's gun could hold were destroyed by the LAPD. The scribbling in Sirhan's notebook suggests that he was hypnotized into taking part, and the casual smear that he was upset that Kennedy supported Israel has been called into question. Just a few of the facts which call into question Sirhan's guilt. There can be no doubt that - just like JFK and MLK - the military industrial complex was behind RFK's assassination. Sad that most of his relatives apparently either don't know or discount the above, and that none of comments I scrolled through mentioned any of it. Not surprising that the MSM put together this hit piece to smear Sirhan and shield the people behind the assassination.

@johnkesich8696 You're enlisting under the disreputable banner of "conspiracy theorist" coroner Thomas Noguchi, someone you feel might lend a touch of credence to your half-baked theories. But the coroner's report does not serve the second gunman theory at all. Sirhan lunged and stretched his arm around Karl Uecker (who was escorting Kennedy through the pantry) to place his gun at or near contact distance, firing several times including the fatal shot just behind the Senator's right ear. This is supported by eyewitnesses Vincent DiPierro, Juan Romero and Boris Yaro. Hence, the assertions by conspiracy hobbyists that Sirhan was never behind the Senator (he didn’t need to be), or that Sirhan was never "within 3 or 4 feet" (his outstretched arm sure was) are erroneous.

The bullets that killed RFK didn’t come from Sirhan’s gun. Listen to RFK JR. it’s not a crazy conspiracy. It’s fact.

Jackie held part of Jack's brain in her hand and gave it to the surgeon at Oarkkand hospital in Texas . Hoping it could be sewn back in, maybe. She may not have processed even what it was She went on to raise 2 wonderful children on her own, because her second husband was no real help. He mocked her. She divorced him, which was traumatic in itself. It took So much strength to carve out that new life for her children and herself. Please don't act like she wasn't a strong woman. She was an exemplary woman, and a very strong one. Ethel was also, but in a different way.

@@Maya-bu2rf I've done my reading & all I can say is that they were very different. Jackie was no saint either btw. No one is. If you're referring to her post-Bobby erratic behavior I can only say that we shouldn't judge bc we don't know how things actually went. She was clearly traumatized and tried her best. She tried to be there for her children & that's all that matters. She tried.

I’ve never forget the morning after RFK was killed, I was an 18 year old US Marine ,Training at advanced Infantry, at Camp Pendleton with orders to go to Vietnam. Our Sergeants got us up early to tell us the News That RFK had been shot. We were all very sad. We all wondered? What is happening to America?
