7 1/2” gauge RH&DR 4-6-2 Pacific, Tintern Abbey.
Tintern Abbey was built by John Haines in 1983 as a half scale RH&DR Green Goddess. Inspired after seeing the A1/A3 Flying Scotsman on tour in the USA, Mr. Haines travelled to the RH&DR to gather information about these engines with the intention of building a model. From the drawings he acquired at the RH&DR, Mr. Haines began construction of Tintern Abbey in 1977, building the engine largely in the machine shop of a sugar mill in which he worked and in his home. Tintern Abbey was completed in 1983, taking six years to build.
In 1983, the Romney Hythe and Dymchurch Railway had 11 steam locomotives, making Tintern Abbey number 12. The RH&DR Pacifics were inspired by Sir Nigel Gresley’s A1, and are roughly 1/3rd their size. Tintern Abbey is a half scale model of the RH&DR Pacifics, making it roughly 1/6th of full size.
Tintern Abbey has 12 1/4” driving wheels, 2 1/2” pistons, and operates at 140 PSI. Patterns and castings were made in England by Greeley and Steel.
Top speed is 15 mph.
The engine was built and based in California, and traveled up and down the west coast visiting many live steam clubs, including Train Mountain. In 2012 we purchased the engine, and relocated it to Oklahoma for use on our estate railway.
