Tom is clearly the superior one. From his aura, his expressions, him actually hitting the correct notes to him having piano manners, it's a no brainer. And even if you put all those things aside, that suit alone will make him win 😂

I personally think Tom did better, despite the mouse problem.

Fun fact: Unlike Rhapsody Rabbit, the animation for Tom's finger placements in Cat Concerto actually hit the correct notes.

The fact that Tom and Jerry got an academy awards for accuracy in notes is crazy.

I like how the animators focused on different things. Bugs, he's the show, so they animated him wonderfully. Tom, the interaction between him and Jerry is the show, and that's what they focused.

Massive props to the animators of The Cat Concerto. They animated most of Tom's fingers correctly in tune with the music, and they still did a really good job in the "cartoon" side of it. They really struck the balance between detail and humour. Even on the internal shots like at 1:03, they still animate it as accurately as possible until they have to switch to "cartoon" with the hammers picking Jerry up and such. Massive respects.

Anybody else think about how hard it must be to accurately animate a character playing piano when they only have 4 fingers

Tom being more smoothly animated, hitting the correct notes and overall being more expressive definitely wins this for me

I always felt Tom won the battle. Jerry wore him out but he hit that last note before collapsing that’s dedication.

Its hard to believe that the tom and jerry is old as my country's independence.

The real pianist for Cat Concerto was Walter Scott Bradley, who also did the arrangement. He was the head of MGMs Animation Music Department. He scored and arranged ALL of the MGM cartoons produced from 1937 (when MGM opened its Animation Studio) to 1957 (when it was closed). On all of the cartoons Directed by William Hanna and Joseph Barbara (so all of the classic Tom & Jerry cartoons) Bradley worked closely with William Hanna, to get the timing just right. He was a staff musician for Disney (1929), with Ub Iwerks (1930-34), music director for Harman-Ising (who produced cartoons for MGM prior to 1937), and, from 1937, with MGM. Scored more than 300 cartoons, highlighting the antics of Tom & Jerry, Droopy, Barney Bear, Screwy Squirrel, etc.

Imagine creating something in the 40's that still hold up 80 years later. Ahead of their time!

The Cat Concerto is one of the few episodes where I’m 100% team Tom not 80% Jerry, 20% Tom

You know what’s crazy… is how old these animations are! So flawless and beautiful! I’ve seen them already but I would have never guessed that they’d be this old!

I remember seeing cat concerto as a kid and I loved it. Had no idea how old it was, thats what I love about these cartoons, theyre timeless and classic.

Watching Bugs bunny and Tom n Jerry as a 90s kid did not prepare me to associate them as cartoons from the 40's.

Hanna and Barbera talked about this in a short documentary in the 90's. Both cartoons are from the same year actually, and they were both in the Academy Awards for that year, ironically at the same time. The Cat Concerto played first, and Rhapsody Rabbit right after that. It was a pure coincidence apparently that both MGM and Warner Bros did the same thing without knowing what the 'rival' was preparing. The Cat Concerto won, one of the reasons being that it made more sense to have the conflict between a cat and a mouse than a rabbit and a mouse, which didn't make sense, regardless of humour. Really fun stuff!

What I like best about Tom is that he added some of his own improvisation to the piece to make it more enjoyable at 3:15 (least for me).

Bugs: Look, one hand! Tom: That's normal. Bugs: No hand!! Tom: That's *also* normal.....

I have to go with Tom and Jerry. The animation looks so much smoother and cleaner. The silence that Tom and Jerry is known for really helps the viewer absorb the song. Also Cat and mouse make more sense than a rabbit and a mouse

you can really tell how different their styles are, Bugs goes for a faster, louder, and more energetic style, while Tom likes it classy and traditional

Here’s another fun fact: Rhapsody Rabbit was the very first cartoon to air on Cartoon Network when it went on the air October 1, 1992.

It would've made a whole lot more sense if Rhapsody Rabbit had Sylvester & Tweety instead.

It's actually pretty satisfying seeing Tom actually happy, its like seeing squidward happy. Its rare but satisfying

One of the few episodes that not only made me root for Tom but my boy definitely got the W. Finished the song while contending with his lifelong saboteur And he still killed it

I really enjoyed how they didn't talk in tom and jerry but rather expressed their emotions with music. Sadly that's changed over time.

Goddamn, Tom and Jerry has some mad animations

When you see both of these classic cartoons, it is rather clear that for accuracy and history of the characters involved, Tom and Jerry is the clear winner here. You must remember, Bugs Bunny never had a situation like this. His confrontations usually involved being hunted by Elmer Fudd or harassed by a host of other characters (Examples include Daffy Duck, the Tazmainan Devil, et al.) so Bugs went all out for the slapstick aspect in this cartoon short. Therefore, while very much the same, these two cartoons are vastly different. Enjoying one more than the other is immaterial as long as you see the angles that each went from. Now, If you take it from the standpoint of the adversarial situation, again, Tom and Jerry have this won going away as they have had this relationship for many years as mentioned before and Bugs, if he had Elmer or even Daffy causing mischief, might have made it closer. But, alas for Bugs, they gave him a mouse in an attempt to show a bit of mayhem. In short, enjoy both for what they are and don't worry about who was better.

Weird to think about how many kids watched these cartoons whose fathers and brothers never came back from the war. Bugs Bunny, Tom and Jerry had some seriously heavy lifting to do.

Apart from the correct notes , Jerry dancing in the piano and annoying tom at the same , Tom's finger stretching , his acting of correcting his suit when it came out of chest , and the part when he plays the piank with his toes and when the chair goes up is hilarious 😂😂😂 hats off to the animator and the one who had the idea to create it .

Both are great and iconic for different reasons. They poked fun at this in Who Framed Roger Rabbit where two ducks from different studios play this same song.

"Cartoons are for kids." they said. "It's only for 5 year olds." they said. And then look at us, watching Tom and Jerry at 19 years old. Even though the original Tom and Jerry wasn't being on Cartoon Network as much, it's still a banger of a show for all ages.

Can we just appreciate the fact that Tom plays the piano much more accurate than most (if not all) Korean movies?

In case you're wondering, at 2:30 the object Tom hits Jerry with is a tuning wrench. They are normally not kept inside of pianos, especially concert pianos, but if you're really lazy or just completely inattentive you might leave one.

MGM and Warner Brothers knew what they were doing. They introduced kids to great classical music and inspired them to take an interest in the arts.

I'm a classical musician who started piano young. It was always such a fun thing for me to see my favorite cartoons playing Liszt. I still think back on those cartoons every so often

Both are so super talented

It bothers me that Tom and Jerry never got to meet Bugs, or even Mickey Mouse for that matter, as they were cut from 'Who Framed Roger Rabbit?'.

Tom is the true pianist here, he's been practicing to be the best of its era. First he learned how to play "six notes" and he already got talent on his paws letting imagination run its music through his veins, shortly after getting asked to perform for the emperor of France. Then he lay low for a while and found an absolutely gorgeous cat girl and his heart went wild, he dressed for the occasion and showed her his amazing pianist skills at her, she was astonished and dance with him for hours. Love and fame, what else did he needed? Reputation. That's what was left on his list. He heard that a certain rabbit was mocking his talent and that he was inferior. He accepted the duel and and they met on stage for incredible piano battle with one of the best songs it could be performed in a concert. Bugs was feeling confident that he'll do better but Tom started serious, seeing his rival's foolishness and auto interruptions made him gain the attention against the critics. As the song was progressing he was letting himself flow with it and even beating the hell out of a mice while still staying in rhythm and hitting the right notes, expressing his feelings on each one of them. In the end, while his rival was about to counter with a strong finale, Tom did it much longer and made his foe sweat nervously, and be so angry that he left the building immediately, proving to the world that the cat is better than the rabbit. And this folks is just the beginning of his journey as he did an extra performance in the reboot, getting lots of applauses and roses from his beloved fans, who knows when he'll do his next show, perhaps not today, not tomorrow, but when that day arrives, I'll be able to hear those beloved notes from his delicate paws once more.

During my childhood, I always side with Jerry and thought Tom was the one being evil in the whole series😂 but sometimes feel sorry when Tom got hurt. When I rewatched it, I realized Jerry was actually the one being really annoying here😂

Despite all the issues Tom had to face, he did far better in playing the piano as compared to Bugs, who showed off. And Cat Concerto is something I remember more than Rhapsody Rabbit.

Bugs Bunny’s version was an indeed comedic yet impressive take, while Tom and Jerry’s was a majestic yet amusing take. Both of their jazzy breakdowns, I’ll admit, were real genius. Tom went as accurate as he could, and Bugs went a bit more outside lol
