While on vacation in New York, Rhoda meets Joe and decides not to return to Minneapolis. Writers: David Davis, Lorenzo Music Director: Robert Moore Air Date: September 9, 1974
If you had told Julie Kavner that 50 years later she would have one of the most recognizable voices on the planet and be worth almost $100 million dollars she would have been floored. I'm glad it worked out the way it did for her.
Yep. Even back then in the 70's. The turmoil back then is nothing compared to today's, but I'm sure it brought joy and tranquility even to people in turmoil at that time. :)
Loved “Rhoda.” I wonder was there a on “Mary Tyler Moore” episode that also served as a back door pilot for the “Rhoda” series? Or was episode 1 the actual start? Somewhere along the lines I guess Rho decided to stay in NY...for love?
Valerie Harper brought Rhoda Morganstern into our living rooms and our hearts. Well done, Valerie. Thank you so much for all the laughs and fun you gave us.
All of the 70s shows and movies were genius. I grew up in the 70s...what a beautiful time that was. I'm 58 now and feel so out of touch with the times we are living in now. I feel myself always longing for that time again, but when I watch the re runs it gets me so depressed. Not happy with my life at all, but feel stuck. These days suicidal ideation is my reality. Sorry, just venting.
@George-rb6bv I'm same as you about days gone by. If you knew who these so called 'idols' actually were you would be horrified so I won't tell you as you won't believe me sad😢
I saw all of these shows in primetime and now as an old 68 year old man what great nostalgia!! Valerie, Julie, and Nancy were brilliantly funny and the writing is exceptional!
I saw Valerie on Broadway several years before she died as the legendary Tallulah Bankhead and she was simply brilliant! I grew up watching “Rhoda” and later “Valerie” and always having an affinity for her creative approach to such memorable characters. What a talented woman she was. We will never forget her.
I just found out you passed away Mrs. Harper. I have loved you since I was a kid in the 1970's. I will be MARATHON watching Rhoda and laughing my ass off all night long starting with the first episode. I will always remember you. You were absolutely wonderful and you will be missed.
I remember when these episodes were reruns weekday mornings when I was a little girl and it brings back fond memories from childhood watching with my mom and sister.
I've started watching Rhoda as I vaguely remember this show from sometime back in the mists of time. When Rhoda says I was born in 1941 - Valerie Harper herself was born in 1939 - I realise just how long ago it was. It is wild to me that Julie Kavner is about to turn 74. I was 16 when Rhoda started and still at school, but I remember loving the fashion of the 70s' before it all went glam rock.
Loved Rhoda ,1975 Monday nights she brought colour into our lives , great cast her mom Nancy Walker , Sister Brenda Julie Kavner , and great story lines when TV really was worth watching
This and the Marry show just opens a flood gate of memories of my mom who is still with us. She divorced in 1976, got a job and raised us up just fine. The clothing they wear on this show was exactly how my mom dressed working at a large department store... good times!
Valerie’s passing really moved me. Rhoda was a really important show in my early years forming my ideas of strong womanhood. From the Uk I fell in love with New York and Rhoda and gang. Beautiful brave lady. RIP. Have enjoyed reliving the show last couple of weeks. Like visiting a lovely friend. Thank you
I remember watching it on the BBC. It's great rewatching these now. They never showed Mary Tyler Moore in the UK as I recall, but, I have the US platform of Pluto TV and watched it on there, Rhoda was such a great character on that too.
This New Yorker was so proud of this sitcom. I’m not Jewish, but it comes with the territory of growing up in New York. I lived in the UK for 17 years and I love and appreciate you and that you loved this as well.
Man I'll miss her for her talent, honesty, beauty & feisty attitude. A classy lady through and through! She will suffer no more now. A life WELL DONE!!!
i'm now old enough to get all the comedy and situations in this, full marks to everyone involved in a show which still is fresh and vibrant today as it was then...love you and love rhoda
I can't believe I have finally get to watch this sitcom again as a mature man. I recall a few episodes from my teenage years after watching the popular MTMS. This is a good show from the 1970s. Better than most sitcoms produced today.
I loved this show. I was delighted, to find it here. This was the first ever episode. It was miles ahead, of the awful sitcoms of today. The colours, were really bright. I love the way, Rhoda narrated the opening of the first season. It was great to see 2 sisters sharing a house, and getting on very well. These old comedies, probably won't be seen on prime time television again, unless it is some archival channel. The only place we can see them, is on you tube, and on d.v.d.
I love the episode in a later season where Rhoda breaks into frozen brownies before they're even defrosted. Back in the 70s, I had a friend who kept Sara Lee frozen cheesecakes onhand for when she was stressed out; they were her Kryptonite and she wouldn't wait for them to thaw either before digging in; she bent a lot of forks that way. LOL.
Yes. The old reviews said that's when the show took a down turn in ratings. Apparently, the movie company got a lot of hate mail from fans. They should have fired the writers. Now a days, no movie company would ever read fan mail. I liked those days that are long gone.
They threw Rhoda’s and Joe together so fast as a married couple. There should have been more tension built up and then a longer courtship and then a. Fight to save their marriage. It really was worth saving. And whatever happened to Joe’s kid? I don’t remember seeing him after this first episode.
@@hotgritz4sho i have always thought the same!! If the relationship had slowly grown, like Pam and Jim in The Office, it would have been soooooo much better...and the writers turned Joe into kind of a prick not willing to really try and save the marriage....it's like the writers gave up on him.
I watch this when it first aired. I watch the Wedding pt 1 and 2 over and over til this day and never tire of it. I have watched the entire collection 3 times in the last 2 years. Rhoda has always been a Role model for me when I am down. She always gets her strength back
Nancy Walker ("Ida") was hilarious. She also co-starred in the later seasons of "Family Affair" and guest starred on "The Golden Girls" as Sophia's sister.
Lydia Lilli Sophia Petrillo - Estelle Getty had some of the greatest one-liners ever. ("Sicily.. (in the year, (?)...) This is Rhoda's sister, before the tall purple (chimney smoke shaped) haircut
Hello Lydia how are you doing I am glad meeting you here and you draw my attention towards you and i can not let go that is why i decide to approach you and we should know and learn more about each other...
Used to watch this as a kid, I'd forgotten how genuinely funny it is. Can't remember the last time I laughed out loud at a sitcom, thanks for putting it here
Im British and i can remember watching this on tv with ny mum in the 1970s. I used to love Rhoda's Bronx accent and Valerie Harper was just so perfect for this show. Happy memories ❤
I agree. This is the 4th time I'm watching the series. It started out so good but, by the end of the second season and her seperation from Joe, they should have fired the writers.
I remember watching this when I was 8 or so. Even though most of the jokes went over my head, I still liked this show. Great acting and an ensemble cast. Somehow I could never understand why Rhoda was played as the "second girl". She's gorgeous.
That's just like on her 80's show, Valerie, she said how her husband, Mike's family considered her a "6". In what world is she a six? I'm a girl and it's hard to look at her and not be a little jealous.
A six out of ten, I guess, but in my opinion and using that scale, I would have to say Rhoda was a solid twelve. I'm a heterosexual female who thoroughly loves men, but Valerie Harper was gorgeous in her prime.
Aww LOVED this show. I THINK it used to be on lunchtime in the UK, before video recorders!!. So I recall watching it during a shool lunchbreak (the old days when you could leave the school premises if you weren't eating school dinner} and then I would hurry back to school. I always loved her confidence and dress style and that she lived in New York!! And Carlton the door man always made me laugh !!
I remember watching this episode one day feeling sooo heart broken back in the 70s. Valerie you made me feel so much better with your great humour. Your sister and mother were great too. Amazing sickcom, still makes me laugh. I've just found out about your passing, I am sad but happy that you've lived a full life to 80. God rest your beautiful soul 🥰
it's a very sad day today here in England as sadly the actress Valerie Harper who was known for her T.V american comedy show called Rhoda from the 70s and became a well known household name died at the age of 80 from some sort of brain cancer. She became a very famous actress who also starred in The mary-Tyler-moore show and shot into fame and MTM gave her own show which I believe was a spin off from mary tyler moore show Rhoda ran for many years filmed in manhatton New York and Valerie won many awards from the show Rhoda including emmie awards and golden globe awards for best comedy and actress. Rhoda became a well popular name world wide and many mothers all around the world who gave birth to baby girls named there babies Rhoda after the T.V Show from the 70s onwards still today girls are named after Rhoda as it is the one comedy show that launched into comedy legend and paved the way for future shows. Valerie will be sadly missed but never forgotten as she is a household name across the globe even 50 years on as she made television history. Thankyou Valerie for all the pleasure and laughs you gave to the entire world from your acting and in real life. R.I.P Valeria we miss and love you so very much
What's even sadder Veronika was that like so many other talented actors and actresses, Hollywood did not really allow Valerie to utilize her many talents. She left her second successful sitcom Valerie (later known as the Hogan Family) because she wanted that series to be like the sitcoms of the 60s when each episode tried to impart pearls of wisdom to the viewers and it was the first American sitcom to touch on some rather controversial (for the 80s) issues like safe sex. But Lorimar just wanted the series to be another mindless comedy which Valerie refused to do so she left the series. So sad to see all that talent go to waste.
I used to watch this show as a kid, I liked it and I liked Brenda. Rewatching on RU-vid. I'm sorry, Brenda is not funny..The extreme self defacing comments are painful. This show went downhill when Rhoda got divorced. They should had her marry Joe so fast either. Its sad bcause they ruined great character. I liked her mom and dad.
Am I the only one who remember Nancy was sooooo popular they gave her her own spin-off show years later too? I remember her walking all over NYC in the intro number. Do you recall that one?
@@hotgritz4sho They tried a few shows with her, which she left Rhoda to do. One of them was The Nancy Walker Show (not a spin off of Rhoda) where she played a talent agent in Los Angeles. One of them was Blanskys Beauties, not a spin off of Rhoda, but a spin off (of a kind) from Happy Days. She played a den mother to Vegas Show girls. Neither worked, and she returned to Rhoda in the final season.
I would like to share this with whomever that after already started reading this, wants to spend thirty extra seconds reading, but if not, in any case it makes me feel better having left the message. I'm 46, born in 1977, and I'm here because I just saw an episode of the TV show "2 Broke Girls", where Valerie Harper was a guest star. As I was watching the episode, I noticed the acting, and though that... "maybe", this woman was someone famous, or maybe just someone with a lot of experience, even if all she did were small jobs here and there. I'm curious by nature, so I had to check who this woman was. To my surprise after checking the Wikipedia I found out she was part of a show that was well known back in the day, "Rhoda".... when I even didn't exist yet. And also that she already passed... which somehow made me appreciate even more the few minutes left of the episode when I saw a scene with her in it. So, three thoughs came to my mind: First, the realization of how many shows have to be out there that I never heard about, specially old golden ones that noone cares to stream anymore. Second, that I want to give this show a try, at least see what's it about. My mindset is to try see as much of the world and its contents as possible before I die. Third, it somehow saddens me how easy people gets forgotten. I understand we all can't know everyone that existed. But yet... it's funny that while some people have known this woman, saw interviews, know about her life, etc... and she lived her own things, issues, happiness, etc... me on the other hand didn't even know she existed. Until today. Anyway, I landed here because I looked up for the show in RU-vid in the hopes I could watch a scene or two, and guess what... seems that whole episodes are here! And I'll leave it here now, thanks for your time 😬
One of my all time favorites!! Rhoda was wonderful; aka Valerie Harper!! So much entertainment; Brenda her sister and Nancy Walker, her mom!! Hilarious!! Love them all !! I will miss you Valerie. Just a beautiful person, thru and thru....
Growing up my Mom and big Sister use to kid around and call me Rhoda. I never knew why. They just always said I was like her and liked bold colors, clothes etc. But the show was on when I was a baby. So, here I am in 2021 watching it for the first time! 😁And I’m hooked, very funny and sweet show. Also, now realise being called Rhoda was a compliment! Rip Valerie Harper🌺
You brought so much joy to me as a young girl who wanted to grow up and dress just like you and have a great apartment just like you and I did and still do! Thank you for being an inspiration to me and I will never forget you beautiful lady. You are in heaven now and missed by millions. Peace.
As someone who's only got into this series recently, I have to say that Rhoda is one of the most believable sitcoms I've seen. The series isn't just written to be set ups and punchlines; what's funny are the characters striking attitudes. When Nancy Walker, for example, comes into a scene (and promptly steals it every single time) and before she even utters a word, you already start laughing a little because you know what to expect from her.
My favourite sitcom from the 1970s. I am a middle age man who loved Rhoda. I wish I had an attractive living aunty like her when I was a boy and teenager.
Good lord, that was a great episode of television. You could feel them finding their way, but the chemistry was immediate and searing. The comedic timing of the scenes, the writing, the relationships - it was all there. Rhoda and Joe’s relationship felt real. I love that they cut the chase and showed two people meeting and falling in love, because in my experience life works like that, not like a Jim and Pam. That final scene with the car being towed was comedic genius and heartfelt.
@@junkboxxxxxx That's a great insight, thank you. It's amazing that it came from a studio note from test screenings, yet they were able to write it in with care instead of feeling shoehorned.
S.I.P Ms.Harper 🙏 I first watched this show with my late big sister as a little girl and have loved it ever since one because she was a Bronx girl like me and because it's such a relatable show.
