Rhoda and Joe decide to set aside one day to tackle the generation gap, and schedule lunch with his parents and dinner with hers. Writer: Charlotte Brown Director: Robert Moore Air Date: September 30, 1974
I made a jeans purse from an old pair of jeans. I was inspired by this episode of Rhoda. My jeans purse did not turn out nearly as well as Rhoda's bag.
I know what you mean, there were shows that I used to watch with my Mum and Dad back in the early 70's - usually in the evenings, it felt so comfortable and safe in those days, as if nothing would ever change; I wish I could borrow the TARDIS from Dr. Who.
@@Felineblood me too. A 1965 baby. I miss All in the Family, MTM, Good Times, Threes Company, etc. Television has sucked for the most part since Everybody Loves Raymond went off the air 😥😎🤨🙄😳
I'm a whole different generation but thanks to Nick at nite , I watched this show in my childhood as well, as if it was a new series.😅... born in 85'. Simpler times I miss for sure.❤
this broke my heart - Rhoda was my MOST favorite TV personality of all time - preferred her with Mary and loved her with Joe - I stopped watching when they broke up - well I was a teen 😊- you can't win 'em all 💞💞💝
OMG watching these episodes transports me way way back....... I had forgotten how truly funny this show was in its first season. So sad so many of the cast have passed on but what a show they made for us all to watch all these decades later!!!!
This episode is priceless........the one -liners between Ida and Rhoda especially. Good comedy doesn't have to beg for laughter.....it's the timing of the actors with well written dialogue as this one has so much of. GREAT!
smartieplum I agree with the nostalgia. There is no respect conveyed in modern day tv - people are rude and crude and it's passed off as comedy. I was a kid in the 70's and what I see on tv now (don't have cable so only see stuff at my friend's) is awful! They portray parents as dumb and the kids as smart asses who are supposed to be funny.
She's truly is a wonderful actress the actress that played Rhoda - I loved her in "Awakening" with Robin Wiliams in this movie. She was absolutely wonderful as the nurse that helped Robin Williams.
Love 'Rhoda'! SO happy to see the episodes on RU-vid. I have great memories of staying up late back in the 90s as a kid and watching these shows on 'Nick at Nite'. Great storylines, witty humor, and most importantly, vibrant and warm characters. The characters in a lot of shows lately seem so cold and snarky...these retro shows are refreshing.
Cold and snark - exactly. I always say modern tv is shallow and they always shooting for shock factor with rudeness. But you put it in the perfect nutshell.
@@godslady8Petticoat Junction, Andy Griffith, The Donna Reed Show, Hazel, Gomer Pyle etc, etc before the 70's those were very family friendly. These shows started with mentioning "the pill" and other sexual innuendos.
This Is A Fantastic Show That's What Was Great About The Fantastic 1970s.I Sure Miss Those Good Old Day's,It Will Never Be The Same Again.Who Ever Was The Jackass That Write Joe Out,Made A Big Mistake.I Thought Him & Rhoda Had Good Chemistry Together On The Show.......
Hey Jab Jab, I'm really sorry that Valerie Harper passed away. I never heard anything about it. Harper was a great actress though. Between her and Mary Tyler Moore, they were great as a pair. They may be both gone, but their comedy legacies will not be forgotten. Truly. Sadly. Deeply missed!
I was 14 when this premiered, in 8th grade. I think it was on Monday evenings. Brenda and Rhoda were hilarious, and so was Ida. I loved the eps that had Ida on them. She was housekeeper on McMillan and Wife, probably when she was also Ida. Joe was cute. I can't recall what their problem was, to cause the divorce. Those jean purses and shoulder bags were popular during most of the 1970s. They were of various styles. I read where David Grogh and Valerie Harper were platonic friends off the show, up until he died.
The writers could be so mean to Julie Kavner (Brenda)...having her obsess over donuts and only get dates with her cousins. I seem to remember it got a little better later in the series when she dropped a few pounds, but come on. She didn't look that bad in the beginning. I loved her and Rhoda's relationship. Even watching this as a teenager in the 1990's, I found them both so relatable.
The overweight jokes about Rhoda in MTMS are absolutely and utterly baffling in this day and age. Not sure how they played back in the day I guess. @@LisaLisa-qo8gt
16:55 - Bella Bruck as "the neighbor lady" who never does anything except say hi. In "Rhoda's Wedding", too. Actually she was a great character actress. She was on "The Odd Couple" a bunch of times, always in funny roles. And her episode of "Maude" - as Aunt Tink, "the lone survivor of a plane crash" was hilarious.
Well, it only took me 45 years but I finally figured out who Zira from "The Planet of the Apes" reminded me of. It's Rhoda's mother. She just shaved her face. Same walk same hair same everything.
I didn't start watching shows like Mary Tyler Moore and Rhoda till they had re-runs in the 1980's. Loved M.T.M show, Rhoda, Mary and Phyllis, oh my gosh they made me laugh when they were together! How cool to have an apt. in a huge Victorian home. Valerie Harper was so pretty, but I never liked the guy they paired her up with as her husband. Loved her mother, what a kick. lol I miss shows like Mary Tyler Moore and Rhoda...funny and great characters. Haven't watched T.V. in years, nothing but ugly bilge. I go to You tube and watch reruns.
loved your comment! but I have to say I loved Rhoda and Joe together - stopped watching when they broke up. She was a beloved character in MTM and Rhoda. Will miss her always. 💝💖💓
Jeans handbags were very popular during 1973-76, I was a teenager then, and never used a purse then, but remember other females having them. Mom had one, too. That plastic on everything! Imagine sitting on it in July with no a/c. Rhoda is even insecure about Joe's parents. Joe is very cute, looks like Tom Jones, but he reminds me of Curt Willard on The Waltons, who married Mary Ellen. Ida is hilarious on this. I bet the way Ida and Rhoda acted in this ep made him feel as though he was in the twilight zone. He always seemed to like Ida though, despite her snoopy behavior. While single, Rhoda often seemed to be after Joe, to the point of smothering him.
I had a jeans handbag in high school during 1976 and 1977. Nancy Walker is hilarious. I love her sharp wit. I never knew anyone who had plastic on furniture. Mom had 5 kids and never did that.
Alan Alda's father, Robert Alda; the golden man from Lost in Space and John Brooks the 3rd from The Lucy Show!!! and much, much more..Rhoda had some pretty big guest stars with her all star cast; Vivian Vance was another.....
This programme is class, it was when I was a kid and watching it now brings back lots of memories of my parents allowing me to stay up to watch it, plus Valerie is a stone cold fox. God bless her soul
I loved this show. Rhoda, Brenda, and their mother all had wry wits and were very funny.I wished Rhoda and Joe would've stayed married.I watched this when new.
I wish I had a nice mother like the character played by Nancy Walker. Rhoda was sort of the attractive aunty I wished I had in my family as a teenager in 1970s. The actor who plays Joe's father was Alan Alda's father Robert Alda.
Thank you for uploading! I really appreciate it. I'm not from the US and I'm just starting to discover 70's sitcoms such as the Golden Girls, Mary Tyler Moore, Maude, Rhoda, etc. I'm amazed to see and identify some actors who played different characters in different sitcoms. For instance, Nancy Walker also played Angela, Sopia Petrillo's sister (The Golden Girls) Harold Gould as Miles (The Golden Girls).
The Bronx Grand Concourse portrayal of a Jewish mother was so accurate. Middle class, some were a bit gaudy, very New York. Pristine lobbies and huge apartments with dining rooms behind french doors. We have a huge rent stabilized Concorse apartment thats been in my family for generations. The neighborhood is very shabby but I rent rooms out for a handsome profit and use one of the empty rooms for storage and the other for when I visit NY alone and dont want to pay for a hotel. How I wish I could time travel to the 20s through the 70s when it had that middle class allure with NYC edge.
