"I kind of got used to living in jail because I had food to eat and a place to sleep" are words that should never come out of anyone's mouth, especially not a gorgeous twenty seven year-old woman who has been homeless since fourteen.
601 Outreach Centre, a part of AIDS Saskatoon, took me to a local hospital where I was introduced to Rhoda. I get a little messed up with each homeless story, but Rhoda wrecked me. Besides sharing a candid story of drug use and homelessness, Rhoda insisted we go see where she lived before being admitted to the hospital, and where she will be living when the hospital feels she is "healthy" enough to be released. It's a tent in a wooded area down a dirt road bit.ly/qDTkDS
PLEASE listen to this strong woman share her powerful story. It is not acceptable that hospitals, or jails, or any institution, knowingly exit people to the streets. The good news here is Rhoda's grandmother said her and her husband can come live with her.
Point blank here! We need support for drug addicts long before they get HIV and years of street life destroys the person they should have become. Drug abuse is a result not a cause. As a young girl Rhoda felt the need to escape, and there was a point where the drugs took over. When I was an addict I needed drugs more than I needed air. How do we help people like Rhoda before it's too late?
Special thanks to AIDS Saskatoon www.aidssaskatoon.ca

I feel bad for her and I hope she finds a loving home, I really do. I like the idea that your videos raise awareness that these people are real and suffering. The problem is funding. I live in southern California, which has a fairly high tax rate and many subsidys, but the most concentrated amount of homelessness Ive ever seen was on a trip to Vancouver years ago while by band toured through Canada. In a country with free health care paid by others taxes, it just proves you cant force sobriety.

I took a course through CAST Canada - it was work related because I was working in a homeless shelter. I have taken many courses and read alot but it really addressed the person as opposed to the addict. The organization was founded by a former addict/homeless person. Amazing fellow. Great course. CAST - stands for "come and sit together".

as a recovering addict, some of the comments here are so ignorant, it's funny. if you've never experienced addiction, you're in no position to judge. this woman may well go on to get clean and enter a profession where she helps others...that's what I did. your nasty comments say far more about you than they do about her.

@cdw100 but the nice home has nothing to do with the innner issues that turns a person to a life of drug abuse. Once addicted drugs become live. I needed drugs more than I needed air. How do we help people with these deeper issues before the life is destroyed?

@cdw100 I agree with you, somewhat. We can't just throw people into housing w/o supportive services. But left in the streets, or in jail, it's not only wrong it's expensive. BTW, thanks for commenting. You always have good points and I encourage different thoughts.

Its ignorant to think someone on streets can just recover. They have to go thru withdrawal. A very complicated and disgusting process if on streets. Sweats,shakes,vomiting,diarrhea etc. Then fever and the dangerous parts of it. Not fun and dangerous!! They need help from professionals and/or just need a place to get better off streets.

I've heard that said about captive tigers and exotic animals when the owner is asked if he thinks it's ok to have them locked up. The owner often says they prefer captivity because they have a guaranteed food supply. And even a high paying 9-5 is a form of captivity if you need it to survive.

I know 12-step meetings are worldwide, but do they have them in Canada? I can understand how people think that by giving addict and alcoholics housing, food, public assistance should cure their addiction and homelessness, but it just isn't that simple. They need to work through the underlining causes of their addiction, not only the obsessive-compulsion to use, but the mental/emotional triggers/causes. Homelessness is a consequence of using, a large one at that.
@kristslluevano9930
@kristslluevano9930 7 лет назад
armedpeace I agree That housing don't cure, I was housed for personl issues I had at one time. And some of the herion & meth addicts managed to score while in these inpatient faciltys. If they don't have it they sometimes snort pills, meth addicts loose there mind often cuase come down is hard. lsd & harder stuff only makes ppl pyscothotic ive seen it. I was housed with these folks cuase of my depression which all they did was medicate me, and have me watch movies surrounded with addicts.its a lifetime disease I have & I fight it everyday. so all ppl like I they are housed with addicts its just the way it is in my city. mental health is what it is, theres no cure. & medical is what pays the state for my treatment I'm sure most others as well. so yes ppls tax dollars lol
@MeezerGurlMakes
@MeezerGurlMakes 12 лет назад
@meezergurl - I meant to add...that one needs to ask a person - not what is their addiction but what is their pain? Most addicts have been abused or suffered trauman or loss. Add to that the percentage that are also dual diagnosis - mentally ill as well as addicted. I am not ashamed to say that the only true healing that will keep someone off drugs is a personal relationship with God. You can go to rehab and courses - helpful tools - but only God can heal the inner pain that causes people to use
@kristslluevano9930

I agree meezergurl, but ive been abused physically almost all my life & I havnt turned to heavy drugs. Yes booze but addiction is a escape that lonely lost & ppl that just love feeling of being loaded turn too. Addiction kills ppls moms dads siblings I know ppl that have it really bad. ppl ive gone to school, Hell even some ppl that work for social services have told me they battled addction of meth!! ut oddly enough there al lots of functioning addicts! even some doctors have een into herion ect. What ppl don't care aout & realieze most heavy drugs affect your mind & can ring out mental illness

@VideoGuyNC remarked: "We (modern society) need real solutions" You are absolutely correct. A truly democratic society would provide the finest recovery centers for the destitute, no matter what their problems (whether drug related or not), provide a stable community life, including meaningful labor. All drugs need to be decriminalized in order to remove the terrible crime that goes with illegal drugs...just like we got rid of prohibition. No excuse for allowing anyone to be homeless.

Unfortunately, addiction doesn’t discriminate based on ANY factors. I feel the same...she is physically beautiful and seems sweet. But the homeless guy that is disheveled and nodding out...we don’t look at them the same. We need to. Sooooo much this. Because love and human connection help us to heal. When I say us, I mean myself included. I’m an addict and have been homeless. It’s not a choice. Be kind to each other, as if we were brothers and sisters. It’s all chaos out there. Just...BE KIND.

@pewterbot9 You sir, have a black heart. I stand corrected - you don't have contempt for everything - you have contempt for yourself, because your words illustrate your inner rage like nothing I could show you. There is no love in your words and I doubt highly your "homeless advocacy" is done out of the need to help others. Do you want to see what's in the mirror? Look at the comments on your own youtube page - this is what other people see in you, and it's quite a sad thing to witness.

@InvisiMan2006 squoinked: "Your contempt for everything" Correction: "Your contempt for everything wicked and unjust". "I hope you put the same amount of energy in helping the homeless" In fact, I've been a homeless advocate for many years...and am utterly disgusted and outraged at the ignorant and evil attitudes among those who are fortunate enough to afford a decent place to live. "as you do in degrading people." I do not degrade anyone, I simply expose their own degraded souls.

I hope you put the same amount of energy in helping the homeless as you do in degrading people. You can call me a liar, but I hope you can get the help you need. I've known lonely people just like you and they don't get very far. Good luck.

@cdw100 squoinked: "we have folks who have housing but demand money for drugs" They are /not/ the majority, nonetheless drug addiction is a symptom of social neglect. I suggest you seek a different line of work that better suits you.

@pewterbot9 Sorry but I am far from a pinhead, and I know about addictions. EVERYTHING is a choice! You choose the addiction, or you choose a life it is that cut and dry and that simple. I do not recall saying she was a looser. I said it makes me sick because to many people choose an addiction over things that should mean far more in there lives. It take ONE thing to end an addition and that one thing is different from us all. Sadly it seems most don't bother to see this. Save your ignorance.

@justmom66 squoinked: "it makes me sick because to many people choose an addiction" There you go again: "choose" has nothing to do with this...she suffers addiction. Young people tend to be quite naive and foolish about many things...thus it is all too easy to get caught up in the adventure of drugs. Besides, just because the drug problem makes you sick, is no excuse to spread narrow-minded ignorance about this problem. Its root cause arises from society's failure. Ergo, you are a pinhead.

@cdw100: First you say "here is what we have in Canada", then you say: "now the money is running out". Therefore, you /don't/ have the services you claimed in your first service. You don't give until it hurts; that's an outright lie. Any affluent society that claims it can't afford to provide for the least of its citizens, and the most destitute, is lying. It is simply a matter of wealth distribution. Like Amerika, Kanada has broken its contract with the people.
