What makes Canadian homelessness unique is aboriginal homelessness. Because residential schools literally destroyed generations of families Canadian streets are filled with thousands upon thousands of "walking wounded".
The numbers of aboriginal people experiencing homelessness in Canada are alarming, and if this social crisis continues to be ignored it will only get worse.
I wish everyone could see the aboriginal people as I do. They are a gorgeous people with a gorgeous culture. They are smart, compassionate, and if given the chance - productive. We must look past the drugs and alcohol, and the social differences. They are not like us, so solutions to end aboriginal homelessness have to be their solutions done their way. We need to provide them with a purpose to live and community.
I met Cassien in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, Canada. Cassien is a drummer. I am a drummer, but not like this. I could tell by the way he stated he was a drummer that it was a respected position in his culture. You could also tell his self-esteem was low. Cassien should be very proud that he had the courage to be open about his situation. Meeting him changed me, and I hope it will change you. I pray this interview will change hearts and perceptions helping all the aboriginal people in Canada.
On the reserve Cassien never had to look for work. He was a respected carpenter and work came to him. He went to Yellowknife because of the lure of Yellowknife being a diamond capital. But because his culture is different he didn't have the paperwork needed to get a job.
Cassien has tried going back to the reserves. But after living in the city things were not the same. He now survives on the streets with help from his friends.
After this interview Cassien pointed to the cup he was holding and said "this is killing me. I want to stop drinking but I can't".
Please watch this powerful interview in it's entirety and share with everyone you know. I think I left a little bit of my heart in Yellowknife after spending time with new aboriginal friends. Cassien's story has changed me and I will never be the same.
Thank you Cassien. You're a very strong man and you should be proud. This interview will help your people and save thousands of lives. It's an honor to call you friend.

@Reina Macarena canada worse. Its extremely enfolded into the canadian culture. They hate the Indigenous people of Turtle Island. Why else would they make them send the babies off hundreds of miles away to school with no one who loves them. Its not normal to make people send their children far away. That is genocide. Poor guy tries so hard with no education. Dirty colonizers.

The issue is, and this is the cold hard truth; It is the English and French settlers who caused this chain of events in the native population of Canada. Alcoholism is widespread (and also sugar addiction, e.g. drinking pop instead of water) and this is due to the fact that the native people of Canada did not have the same genetic enzymes to handle sugar and alcohol as the white settlers did. These native people knew how to live and it was taken from them and jumbled around and stuffed inside of a European society. So if anyone is ever racist to native people especially the people in MB and SK I'm looking at you, you're doing a disservice by not being sympathetic and realistic to the situations that native people face living in Canada after the period of residential schools, work camps, wars, etc. have taken their toll.

When us men begin to cry you know there’s serious pain. Someone needs to make a movie about people like him. Humanity is all about the haves and have nots. If this were me I would of ended my life,” long ago. I don’t know how they continue to survive on the streets.

I truly love the purpose of these videos, bringing an inside look into the issue of homelessness. But the ending to this video really put me off. This Man was just beginning to tell his life story as the camera slowly pans away. He was clearly upset about not having his story heard, and you continued to carelessly pull away from him. I’ve also noticed sometimes you tend to want to question the homeless about their opinons or get them to spin a certain narrative in their message instead of simply allowing them to organically tell their story from THEIR PERSPECTIVE. As a result of seeing this in numerous videos on this channel, I may need to seek other channels similar to this for viewing. It really bothers me how inconsiderate this behavior is, to cut someone off in the middle of telling their life story, or over talking them seemingly without remorse. Why bother interviewing the homeless if you’re not going to allow them to be fully heard? I respect the message, but it’s starting to appear that this may be a scenario of attention/financial opportunity, albeit mixed in with some genuine care for the homeless. I would strongly suggest you take some of these comments to heart. We want to hear the stories of the homeless without your interjections. Otherwise, I question the motive behind this channel.

I like these videos but the guy that does them is annoying. He should just let them talk instead of cutting them off. He kept saying “you can’t go back” and the guy said “well I could” and then he just kept pushing the narrative he wanted to push that there are no options for the guy he’s interviewing. Just let him tell his story. Also don’t cut off the video so quickly! This guy was just getting into talking about what he wanted to talk about and he just starting walking away.

This man's story is truly heartbreaking because he seems to be just devastated and regretful. It seems more often than not that these people having done anything wrong to find themselves in the situation they find themselves in. Yet we invest incalculable amounts into the criminal justice system when if we attempted to fund the root causes of those issues by helping the homeless and building employment around rehabilitation, perhaps that might go some way to solving a growing global epidemic of disenfranchisement.

One of the problems with First Nations/Native culture is after drumming and singing is finished, it’s time to drink and get wasted. They drink all night until the early hours. I was always afraid of drinking because I had seen it all my life. Didn’t start drinking until my 30’s because thats just what people do. Tough day...have a drink. Game is on...have some drinks. Low and behold, it got me too. Im 1/4 Scots Irish and 3/4 American Indian, so Im about as genetically predisposed to alcoholism as one can get. Eventually had to get on antabuse to stop. But I understand the struggle and I feel for people who arent as fortunate to get the kind of help they need.

Things don't "fall apart", you let them fall apart. It is sad that homeless people can't realize this. The future is bleak unless a person knows that they are in control. The only way a person can be in control of his/her self, is if they always take responsibility for their self. The moment blame or cause of circumstance is place on others, system...then the person is left at the mercy of other people, the system,luck... to rectify their slump. It leaves them feeling powerless and feeling like they can't change their situation, when the truth is that only they can change their own situation once they realize that they must take responsibility for themselves. Basically, if we blame others, then we make ourselves the victim. People whom never allow themselves to be a victim, will never struggle for long because they know they have the power to get out of whatever situation they got into. The moment we blame others, we must wait for them to change to fix our situation. In the mean time we will fool ourselves with a bunch of excuses as to why we must remain in a rut. The only way to truly help homeless people, is to find a way to convince them that they must change their "victim" mindset, to regain control of their life.

Idk dude one time I met some dude who got laid off from his job in Alberta and got stranded at a work site for like a week with no food and he hitchhiked all the way back to Vancouver and began looking for work again and aside from a couple interviews with no avail, between that and the high rent in Vancouver he eventually accepted that he would have to be homeless until he found work. He told me that it had been 4 years and he had a lot of setbacks and got addicted to down and has been homeless ever since. P.S. Making things harder for him his mom basically disowned him when he turned 18 for her own selfish reasons, drugs and her boyfriend and he never knew his dad. So when I heard his full story and I could tell the man was being honest with me, I gave him $40 and some weed and we went out for some beers as well. And that's an example of things falling apart.

With that being said however, I do about 70% agree with what you said, especially the last paragraph. I just think it's easier said than done for most homeless people to change their mentality, but certainly a high number of them don't even try to do good for themselves, but then again also there are some people who truly got dealt a bad hand in life. God bless

what the fuck, why are you putting victims of circumstance on camera for the whole world to see?

The whole purpose of the channel is to bring to attention the "invisible" people in the streets, those the higher classes largely choose to ignore, politicians like to pretend are a myth. Homelessness is a very real problem.

Parents that let kids drink at 12 years old ? Maybe Indigenous people need some understanding of family values .
@Saugeen29

don684 why would you say that, when white people took the aboriginal kids away from their family.

And why in many cases are/were the kids removed from their families? The parents have issues with alcohol, drugs. They can't take care of their kids. There are a lot of Indigenous children born with fetal alcohol syndrome. It is still going on. Just listen to this man his parents did not raise him his grandparents did. A man's job is to provide for his family, that is what men do. Getting involved in drugs and alcohol is a waste of a life. This man's parents lacked the basic values a family needs. No "white people" want to remove children from their home. It is done because the children are not being cared for properly.

don684 No the indigenous people never had alcohol at those times, and no diseases. Those came from the white people who invaded their land. They never had alcohol in their homes. They were living a peaceful life until white people came to their land(Christopher Columbus).

They expect money for NOTHING!! they feel that they are entitled. they don't need to work, the rest of Canadians have to pay for their addictions. For them to work is a sin.

well described in the description -- residential schools are responsible for at least 95% of the broken situations that makes First Nations resort to the streets.
