Throw a tennis ball in a pillow case and then throw it over your shoulder. The case gives you control over the height without having to worry about dropping the ball. A long sock works too.

Great point.. I use a bowling ball cleaner... it's a little thicker, so it's nicer to the walls. Thanks for posting this! Dr. B2

Peter Petrakis I have 2 tennis balls together inside a cut off long sleeve shirt tied at the ends. It hits both sides of the spine. What do u guys think? I also use it on the floor because on the wall just dont penetrate enough.
@BrookbushInstitute
@BrookbushInstitute 6 лет назад
I like it... I am not a fan of the floor, but I leave room for individual preference. If you haven't tried the Hypersphere by Hyperice, find a friend who has one and give it a try. Definitely a game changer. Dr. B2

Yes, tennis ball(s) in a long sock make it easy to position and not drop, and even on the floor, it means you can start with the tennis ball low and pull on the sock until it's at the right height.

So glad I found this video. I’ve been having a sharp “knife like” pain in my right rhomboid on/off for over a year. It’s been exponentially worse lately, which lead me to do some research online and found this video. I bought a Hyperice mini hypersphere and did this technique. My shoulder hasn’t felt this good in I don’t know how long. Thank you so much for sharing this information.

This felt very promising. I keep doing this along with the other stretches and heating pad. It flattened out the noodle like trapezius that lies over the Rhomboid near the back vertebrae’s. My soreness leaves me very fatigued around the eyes and overall weak. I tell you, that thoracic back area is very sensitive and a central point for all upper movements. Thanks a million, great show

I wish you much luck in your recovery, but it is likely that you will need several techniques to correct an issue with your upper body mechanics. The place you feel pain is just one symptom of a larger pattern of altered motion. Try the technique above, but also work on thoracic mobility, releasing your levator scapulae and pec minor, and maybe child's pose and crucifixion stretches. Dr. B2

QUICK TIP : : : Put the ball in a pillow case, with the loose end of the pillow case laying over a shoulder. This will allow you to adjust the ball by pulling the pillow case end and maybe more import, the ball cant drop to the floor and roll.

great video Brent. Just wondering at 6:06 you say "arms fall" in reference to upper body dysfunction on an overhead squat assessment. I haven't finish watching your videos on the overhead squat assessment and I haven't ever heard of "arms fall", what is it? Sometimes I let my shoulder and arm relax and let my arm fall and I feel pins and needles in my hand, is that an arm fall?
@BrookbushInstitute
@BrookbushInstitute 7 лет назад
Hey Windstorminator, "Arms Fall" is a sign on the Overhead Squat Assessment, in which an individual cannot squat with their arms overhead and in-line with their torso. What you are experiencing can be symptoms of this dysfunction although may be more related to nerve impingement. As long as it does not persist is likely nothing to be concerned about, but it is something to start working on with corrective exercise. Dr. B2

I had 2 huge back spasms that came from nowhere at the end of April and I couldn't move or breathe deep for quite a few days. It's a lot better now but I still have this pain right next to the bottom of my shoulder blade (I can pin point it with my finger) and I had no idea what it is or why it's still sore. If a roll a tennis ball over the point it is shower painful. Just watched this video at the bit where you show the trigger points of that muscle are exactly where this pain is. I've been rolling the tennis ball up and down over the area (looking like Baloo from the jungle book when he's scratching on the palm tree) but should I just be holding the tennis ball in place and putting pressure on it not with the rolling too? I often feel it's more painful after I've rolled it with the ball. :-/ I'm also not sure if my sleeping position isn't helping. The pain in on the left side but I have to sleep on my left side with a bed wedge due to acid reflux. :-/ it's all a mystery!

I finally got rid of it. I Just kept applying a LOT of pressure with my body back buddy and also using a myofascia ball. I also noticed when I would lie down on my side, the pain would flare up, so I just stuck to lying on my back and stomach. Finally, I did find a good stretch that hit the spot well too: basically you sit down at the edge of a chair, with feet flat on the ground, and you take your left or right hand (whichever side the pain is on), and grab the heel of the opposite foot.
@fabianserrano8366
@fabianserrano8366 4 года назад
S W dude did this and the stretch felt more significant than any other. Thanks a lot man. As far as applying pressure, how hard were u pressing into the spot and how long were u holding it for and for how many sets/reps. My misdiagnosed issue led me to bad mobility issues to the point I could not raise my arm to the side. Thru months of therapy I have regained more mobility tho not 100 percent. However this pain will sometimes creep up which means it’s time to massage and stretch

I just injured my right rhomboid in the gym performing overhead press. Not the first time I've tweaked it, but definitely the worst. I receive massages about once every 2-3 weeks, mostly for back maintenance. I've had a few sessions focusing purely on rhomboid, mid trap, and pec minor. As well I had IMS this morning on the rhomboid with release of trigger points along the scapula while my hand was placed in the small of the back with elbow outward. I do have winging. I was a pitcher for 16 years and thus my throwing shoulder is different from the other one. I've been told to focus on serratus anterior exercises, which I will do. I've also watched you video on these exercises. My question to you is, when I resume overhead presses in the gym, what should I focus on in terms of form, to prevent rhomboid over action and strain? I've always been taught that all pressing exercises, overhead or otherwise, that I should focus on scapular retraction and not let the shoulders roll forward. Could this retraction have caused the imbalance I am seeing between rhomboid/trap and serratus anterior/pec minor? Thanks in advance.
