Thanks guys for all the kind words! I would love to chat with you guys more about the 5.0, what to expect and where I think it is going….. and to help your viewers better understand what it is all about. Let me know how best to reach you both. And again thanks for a flattering review! Fred Craig
Moving the pistol’s locking to the front is brilliant, and could conceivably be applied to many different methods of lock or delay to bring the bore axis of pistols down.
Finally! I've seen several teasers and 'reviews' but none have covered what is the interesting part - the recoil system. You did a great job describing details like how the hammer allows for a low bore axis.
I remember when Martin Tuason first teased this pistol several years ago. Knowing Fred Craig's history of pistol designs, I was quite intrigued by what he would come up with. Well, my patience has finally paid off. I really do appreciate how much thought has been put into simplifying the design of this pistol. I see a lot of things implemented that reduces thee complexity of the internals and minimizes the machining needed to make the parts. It even seems like the slide stop lever is based on the one on the MAPP1/Tanfoglio pistol for parts commonality. I hope to see them available here in the Philippines soon. Hopefully I'll get to handle one the next time Armscor holds its annual tactical ams survival show.
@@smokingcrab2290 I personally am down from my usual purchases in past couple years due to seeking quality over quantity. I need to sell some not so great “plastic” ones!
This is the pistol I'm most interested in for 2023. The system used to lock the pistol, low bore axis, great trigger and the ergos which seem amazing, are the selling points for me
@@hvuu1628 i would say the opposite. what is so innovative about sw mp 5.7. the round it shoots ?just saw the review it seams they have added gas operation and a rotating barrel. ill take this semplesity over rotating gas operation . for me the less moving parts the better, time will tell
@@jeffforbes70 you fail to see that mp5.7 practically built a booster and nelson device into the pistol. you would not need a booster in a suppressor. a simple can would do and no recoil failure by design. it is actually quite innovating in that sense. you sure lack a lot of foresight in function and usability.
This reminds me of a consumer friendly Laugo Alien.. of course that’s not an apples to apples comparison but still. I’ll definitely be picking one up and I can’t wait to see what this evolves into.
Looking forward to seeing this in more sizes and calibers. Would make for a great carry gun with a 4 inch variant. Seeing it in 10 and 45 would be great as well
Great video Sootch with Robbie there. He’s great and his expertise in analysis of design and function are especially appreciated in this review of the RIA5.0. This blue collar guy will definitely be getting a new Rock Island. Excellent work Mr. Craig.
When you and Robbie team up, we--the viewers--are in for an AWESOME treat!! Both of you tag-team with each other so well; great friendship and respect and gun-knowledge between the two of you. And I recognize that both of you come from somewhat different perspectives, as far as how you see the weapons you evaluate, but there is great attention to Detail by both of you. Keep up the GREAT work, and, God Bless. P.S. Should the owner us a grease in the lower part of the frame, where the guide rod, spring and other moving parts reciprocate? Thanks !!
I bought one of these, only thing it needs is a better, shorter, reset on the trigger. The reset is pretty long. When I was competing with it I wasn’t releasing the trigger far enough out to reset before pulling again. Screwed me up a few times. Can learn your way around it but I would definitely prefer a shorter reset. Gun performed flawlessly though, zero issues. And it’s a tack driver, extremely accurate. Recoil impulse is very smooth.
There's a lot to admire about the efficiency of this design approach (which seems as robust but simpler than the mechanism found in the Korth PRS), right up until you said the shooter needs to use a tool to depress the detent or the firearm cannot be reassembled. That fact seems to be a bizarre departure from an otherwise admirable system with tight tolerances. I understand that this is really meant to be a competition firearm, and so the need to be field-strip ready is not essential- but many of the features associated with high-end competition devices (high accuracy, speed, reliability, etc.) are also desirable for EDC. Great presentation. Thank you! 🖖
@@tiortedrootsky The RIA 5.0? the barrel locking mechanism. to many parts involved to have it operate correct. located in the worst place on the gun. guide must be kept in decent condition or your block can screw with gun function. kept the outdated features of the CZ75.
@@hvuu1628 thanks for your input. It's not the simplest design, but maybe its not that bad, compared to beretta 92 at least. Simple shapes, it seems that a lot of the cuts could be made in one go. Maybe it could be redesigned for fully polimer frame with steel inserts, even simpler shapes and with large enough production it could be pretty economical. Maybe the locking piece being so far forward and the rod wear is not very problematic for 9mm.
@@tiortedrootsky it the stupidest design and can not compared to a beretta at all. lots of simpler cuts. it's a gimmick. they can do polymer frame as cz 75 sp01 came in polymer. no brainer. not economical at all with a retail price over $1k that shoots no better than the SP01. wear is wear and happens with moving parts and that many more on this RIA5.0. it's going to be another failure like their 22 tcm. like they didn't learn from thompson center .30 TC. 🤣 true innovative design are like laurgo alien and SW MP5.7.
Great stuff Don, thanks for sharing. You too Rob. Thanks for the intro to Wheaton Arms as well. I’ve bought many Glock goodies from Rob and his wife. Always great parts and warm thank for your order. You don’t often see that type of heart felt service anymore these days.
Thanks for showing this. It's a cool design. This RIA 5.0 construction seems to be as extraordinary as the construction of the Korth pistoles that have a movable but fixed barrel. Ahh, and yes the low bore system is a benefit too. Your wrist will thank you.
Korth PRS is fixed barrel, roller delayed blowback. This gun is regular, moving barrel, short recoil operated, with locking block going up and down. The closest thing to this is beretta 92.
I see a potential problem for combat use. Like the Alien pistol, the weapon is open to the elements. The hammer is not covered and will admit FOD to the internals. The Alien has the same problem, it needs to be addressed. But for a competition tool. ... Looks GREAT!!!
This pistol is absolutely groundbreaking, you don’t realize how much so until you actually get the privilege to shoot it and take it apart. Many of the components in the gun are original, very rare. Some are already being patented. What makes it so amazing however, is the fact that it is able to be priced at around $500 while also being reliable with a long lasting internal system, all while being commercially produced. Outstanding engineering.
That is one of the most ingenious handgun designs I have ever seen. Almost as amazing as the m249 saw. God bless you guys and thank you for posting the video and always be safe!
If sootch00 likes it and have praises for it... You know its a good buy... 🥰 Goodjob RIA and Armscor for innovating... Hoping prices would still decrease.
Very interesting design, thanks for showing this closer look at the internals and how the system works. It looks like a better mousetrap and I hope it proves out to be what it promises to be.
I been waiting to see someone do a breakdown on this pistol... thanks for tearing it down. Theres some cool machining and some innovative design goin on there. As someone who works in firearms design and prototyping, i have a few new ideas to add to my arsenal.
Make one for carry and with a light rail and I'm all in, same size as the glock 19 for comparison, still hats off for this ground breaking pistol can't wait to see more models!
The only downside is that a bunch of people are so into the smallest, lightest possible subcompact as the only valid gun in their mind, that they will overlook what looks to be a fine highly innovative design.
All I need is more money. I maxed out my gun store credit card on the Springfield Prodigy and the Ruger SFAR. I almost cried when I saw they had the DWX in stock yesterday and couldn’t get it.
Hi Sooth00, we had a conversation (comments) in one of your video(maybe 2yrs ago) that i mentioned to you that according to Bolo Tuason, Fred Craig and Martin Tuason are planning to make a unique pistol with internal hammer, that was mentioned by bolo tuason in a gun show here in Philippines (cannot remember what year was that gun show) but he didn’t say that it will be manufactured in America. For now no news here in the Philippines when it will be release here, so you’re lucky to shoot that unique pistol made by RIA/Armscor. Nice review and hoping to see more videos like this.
I'd like to see a side by side comparison to the Sig X5 Legion and a CZ 75. What is flatter, what has the best "felt" recoil and any other observations you make.
Rock Island is an awesome, wholesome company that puts out great, affordable products. Rip offs and other companies' designs? Sure. But they're real and they're fantastic.
Armscor happens to own the original Colt tooling and have invested heavily to update them to keep the quality on the level. One of the cool things about RIA is that they are well priced and come standard with features you only see on higher priced premium guns.
RIA 5.0, In my opinion it's an impressive engineering marvel. I want to own one just because of the genius design. 10mm ammunition is the second most sold in the US after 9mm. I'm hoping, that all of you who love the 10mm cartridge, will help try convince Rock Island to “evolve” a RIA 5.0 into a 6" version in 10mm auto. A RIA 6.0!!! It might be that the RIA 5.0 is in the league of like the Laugo Arms Alien. But as a 6" 10mm Auto it would, in my opinion, be the best 10mm pistol ever created. The design obviously works well for 9mm, but it appears intended for the more powerful 10mm Auto cartridge. In my opinion a RIA 6.0 10 mm would leave the SIG P220 Elite 10mm looking like a dinosaur.
in a traditional design, the surfaces that provide the locking are not the surfaces that bear friction during the cycling. Here though they are, so accuracy *will* be reduced as round count mounts. But, got to love the innovation regardless.
This is an awesome looking firearm, very innovative to say the least. Hopefully it goes into full production with different variations and calibers. Have been watching reviews of the firearm recently and a thought came to me. When manufactures develop a new model, they seem to start with a smaller caliber, then possibly make some for the larger bore. I understand that 9mm is more prevalent than other calibers, but I would think one would design first for a larger caliber. Even if a large bore design doesn't make it to market, at least being designed for such, the firearm would be essentially "indestructible" with a smaller caliber. I would be more likely to purchase one of these in a 10mm or .45acp than 9mm. The physical size of this model, to me, would lend itself well as a backup woods gun. Therefore, larger caliber. Just my two cents. Regardless, what I have seen so far of this firearm, RIA has produced a gem with this design. Thanks for the video.
Low price, clever design and a lot of features you find on premium guns. As for quality, I haven't heard that many complaints. Most say their RIA gun works fine, or if they had an issue it was easily fixed. They probably make their share of lemons anyway. But even Korth have been known to have the odd issue.
It looks like the Sig Sauer XTEN a tad. The square barrel and slide is AMAZING! I've seen Rock Island Armory getting better and better, in 2020 they won pistol of the year from Guns & Ammo the BBR 3.10 and I have shot that subcompact 1911 in .45 it holds 10 +1 of .45 and its amazing how because it doesn't look like it can when other pistols are bigger holding less like the Glock 36, it isn't as long. I shot the BBR 3.10 and it was so smooth but even better was the accuracy!!!! For a 3 inch barrel its Jaw dropping magic. I told myself I would NEVER own a pistol with a 3.3 inch barrel or less PERIOD! But I do plan on adding the RIA BBR 3.10 to my arsenal!!! I remember when Rock Island Armory was known for cheap pistols but that's just because they wanted to get sales not because the pistol was cheap. Once they took over the old Colt building and machines and got the best steel, they updated the Colt equipment and milling machines and got a couple new ones they have been hitting home run after home run!!!! This pistol is just so unique and different it's one of those pistols that is a great talking piece and fun at the range! OH PLEASE TELL ME THEY ARE MAKING ONE IN 10mm!!!!??? I emailed them and asked if they could make the BBR 3.10 in 10mm they responded back saying they would look into it. I know they have to a few of the bigger 1911's my buddy bought one. If they make this or a BBR 3.10 I will buy this and a BBR!!! This 5.0 is really smooth looking!
The problem with this is, when you buy an RIA pistol for $500 and it functions flawlessly even as well as some of the high-end pistols you feel like it's an accomplishment. When you pay $1000 for a pistol, it had better be one of the best pistols I've ever shot. Reliable, accurate, good-looking ect. RIA has some stiff competition in that market and we have yet to see how they did . I'm not saying it's a bad gun or bad idea. I'm just saying that a big jump for a small company and I hope they land on their feet.
This is a beautiful pistol. Thatd be pretty cool if they'd come out with a compact or micro for edc. Also, wonder how itd do suppressed. If it even can.. a can. Lol.
