And the best part, a glider doesn't lose much worth. You can sell it for nearly the same price you bought it for. A car is only worth 80% of it's original value the moment you roll off from the factory.

NO! A car is worth 100% when it leaves the factory and looses 15% when it is sold from the dealer and generally it also looses 33.3% after 3 years, but when it leaves the factory it is worth 100%.

Not all gliders are rated for aerobatics. If you want to do aerobatics, the glider should be rated for it, AND you should get additional training first. even then, some clubs may not allow it due to insurance or other reasons.

Very interesting, thank you! - You mention long-distance gliding and spending a whole day in the air. I would be interested in how you prepare for that? You must be bringing snacks and water? Do you start with a specific diet? How do you manage the bathroom needs etc? What about temperature, under the canopy on a sunny day, I guess it gets hot, is it enough to have outside air stream through the cockpit? It would really be cool to learn about these practicalities that are behind the scenes usually...

Water...bring lots of water, and a plastic bottle.
@otsokivivuori7726
@otsokivivuori7726 3 года назад
This is a bit late, but I think that this is useful. Snacks are indeed important for long flights. For just a few hours you don't need much but for the flights upward of 10 hrs a good prep is needed, maybe some sandwiches or similar thet is easy to eat. Most pilots have a camelpack style water container for their flying. As for pre flight, the best is to eat as you normally do, and not be hungry or stuffed when starting. Same with drinking. Heat is best managed by the glider, almost all gliders have a ventilation port in the nose and a vent in the cockpit, and for extra ventilation there is a small hatch on the side of the canopy. Light clothes help if it really is extra hot out, but the altitude helps to cool the air. It's also important to be protected from the sun. A hat, sunglasses and sun cream are pretty much essential. Most pilots use a bucket hat because it protects from all sides, does not have a button on the top and is not unvieldily large. Buttonless baseball caps are also seen. Buttons are not fun because if an extra strong thermal hits and the glider shakes, you dont want to hit the canopy with one, for the sake of both your head and the canopy. Peeing is of course eadier for men, with the procedure at least where i live being to pee in a bag and throw it out of the small hatch. It does seem a bit bad to throw plastic out at least for me, but i don't know of a better method. As for women, i really don't know. There are less of them in the sport and it's not the most common thing to talk about. Maybe you can find someone for that if it is relevant for you. But i'm sure that when you get to the club these will become almost like second nature to you.

Don't forget that you can buy a glider as part of a syndicate which shares the cost (as you seem to have done with your brother). If you share the cost between 3 people everything already becomes a lot more affordable. Often enough not all of the syndicate members are at the club when you are which means that you often don't even need to share. I appreciate that it's a bit more politics that is involved but can make it a lot more accessible. In addition some people might own a glider outright but find the maintanence costs a bit high. They might offer a syndicate membership without ownership share which means that you share the running costs and have equal access to the plane but you don't actually own any share of the plane. All of the above is highly unfeasible with a sports car.

I think that the comparison between a high performance glider, and an Audi RS6 doesn't fit very well...first the sailplane is made with very high craftsmanship combined with advanced enginering(we can't say the same for the most of modern cars)... it keeps its value much more than the RS6 which depreciates at the speed of light and as an industrial product made out from scale economy it's absolutely not worth the price(total waste of money just to appear and impress other people)...we talk about a trivial heavy station wagon with just a more powerful engine than the standard A6...I think I would find more the phylosophy of a sailplane in lightweight sport cars like the lotus elise, the exige, the mx5 and similar, which are ,like gliders ,products for entusiasts who enjoy more the flying or driving experience rather than appearance😉

R Peirce When you are at a club with a winch (which I am), it costs about NZ$30 to be launched and costs about 50c-$1 for every minute you’re in the air, so for $200 you can go on a 3 to 5 hour flight. Heaps cheaper than power flying. Also, you get to learn things that you don’t usually learn in power flying which can be useful such as energy management and slow flight, which can be useful in emergency situations and bush flying.

TrAiLiO1111 Depends on the direction of your club, if leisure flying is the norm or if competition and long distance flying are actively encouraged. In my club we are in the latter category, although having mostly club class, and only one standard class ship. However we have enough planes that one can have a plane all day for long cross country flights, or borrow them for competitions more often than not. Members regularly compete in junior nationals with club ships.
@kaihorstmann2783
@kaihorstmann2783 4 года назад
TrAiLiO1111 It also depends how serious you take the hoppy (or rather life style), and available money. It is also not unusual to start with a modest plane, and upgrade later when your performance and expectations raise, but also your budget (hopefully) improves. I will probably stick with my prehistoric Ka 6 unless it is grounded for some reason, or climate change progresses with increasing winds that I cannot reasonably go cross county any more. In the last two years I had quite a few frustrating days where I could not gain any ground or at least did not exceed bicycle speed on average.

I bought my first glider (Astir CS) before I even went solo in gliding. I did about 10 solo flights in the club trainer, and then got into the Astir. I put about 300 hours into that glider over 4 years before selling it. One HUGE benefit of owning your own glider is that you don't have to wait for the club glider - especially on the good days. Also you can fly as long as you want. Don't think that these ships are too old, slow, low performance for you to have fun in. I did many 300Km plus flights, my longest flight being 520Km in 7h20. As Stefan said, your brain is the engine, and the only way you can make yourself better at gliding is by getting in the air and flying.

The cost of owning my Arcus M in the uk is massively higher than your figures - 4k euros insurance, 4k euros for the ARC, and always other costs. This year I spent 7k euros to upgrade the flight computer. This is more than the running costs for an expensive car. However the depreciation is much less for the glider.

Fetilu09 depends. Wooden glider very low. And at ages 50-60 years the dept is forgiven. Glass ships are OK. Glass fiber production used energy, but the weight of glass is not so high. The resin is made from oil products but again the weight is not too high. Carbon fiber on the other side is really energy hungry and expensive process. Still keep in mind that the weight of the entire plane is much lower than a car, and steel, and particular aluminum and magnesium production are more energy hungry. Also keep in mind how long gliders live. I already mentioned. Club class glass ships also are 40-50 years old, and can still be in terrific shape.

It's tricky dropping the kids off to school in an ASG29 or going down to the shop to get some milk in one. The car might be a better solution for this.... They really aren't comparable. One is for day to day living and the other is for a hobby. Although it is good he showed the breakdown of how much a good really costs
@Michael-dq9cs
@Michael-dq9cs 8 месяцев назад
There are also two or even three-seaters. And remember, you anyhow have to have a parachute. But i agree, it is still tricky. For the milk, you can use the wing tanks; they can store more than 30 gallons of milk.

I found a SZD-36 cobra 15 glider for sale at 3000 dollars (including trailer), the owner says he can't fly in his city and that's why he's selling his glider with his trailer, I don't know much about gliders, I don't know if It is a scam or not, but if this sale is true I definitely want to buy it, what do you think?

@ianstobie
@ianstobie 3 года назад
You probably need to lose 10kg, which is doable. Help out at a gliding club, dragging gliders around! Main issue may be getting training, as two pilots plus two parachutes might get near trainer limit. Check club rules for where you are e.g. Lasham UK www.lashamgliding.com/pages/age-weight-restrictions

Uncanny, I was just looking into the cost of gliding at my local club last night. Very informative video thanks Stefan, maybe didn't need a comparison to a car IMO, there are many other hobbies/sports that you can spend a heap of money on. P.s. How do you tow the trailer without a car? 😉

1. An Audi can't fly nor is it big enough to carry a proper rc plane --> so it is useless anyway 2. You can see much better out of a glider 3. Chicks attracted to gliders are said to be much more cute and of course much more sensible than those attracted to Audis 4. Only pro of an Audi: you can stop almost whenever you want, if you want to go to the bathroom or behind a bush --> Next comparison should be glider vs. Renault Espace or Dacia Lodgy because of higher usability with lower operating costs

@SteFly
@SteFly 4 года назад

But why would anyone ever buy an Audi RS6? The prices should be public but none of the manufacturers discloses that. It’s a hobby, hobbies cost money. We want to know what the gliders cost. If I’m looking to buy a glider I want to know what the cost is before I even consider manufacturers. If DG says that their spiffy new glider cost 200k euro I’m gonna ignore it.

@John_Smith__
@John_Smith__ Год назад
I agree that a glider is an excellent choice over a RS6 or any other sports car. But the comparison is not fair. 1- Everyone Needs a car ... so if one buy a great RS6 that could be your Daily car to use ... while if one buys a Glider we also need a Car and a trailer ... price adds up ... cars are utilitarian by nature, even the sports models ... gliders are not. 2- Also Gliders need to go up and therefore each time you use them you have to pay an airplane or a winch .. another extra cost. 3- Also a Glider can not be used everywhere and whenever the owner wants to fly ... usually they have to be carried a long distance from home and only if the weather conditions are good. 4- Apart from the parachute you also need the oxygen delivery system and it's maintenance. 5- You also need many extra components for the glider like protection covers, wing support wheel for assembling/carrying the glider Trust me I think a Glider is a much better toy then a car ... but the problem is that a car is not a toy ... even toy cars can be used every single day for work, commute etc ... not the case of gliders.
