i find it so funny that richard is physically leaning away from jimmy but when he's with noel on bfq noel can practically be in richards lap and richard wouldn't even bat an eye.
People who say this was awkward between the 2 and they don't like each other a just wrong. They have worked together before and Jimmy knows Richard plays the uncomfortable character. Richard deliberately started an awkward moment and then Jimmy pushed it to see just how awkward it could get for fun. Just go watch the Big Fat Quizzes with Richard and Jimmy and you can see how much they like playing off one another
People who genuinely think Richard was disturbed in some way by Jimmy really don't understand a single thing about how Comedians work and deliberately bounce off each other. Good comedians always set up each other and bail each other out of shitty bits.
I think the laugh isn't sarcastic but it depends how funny he finds something and what kind of mood he's in and who he's interacting with. So his normal laugh would be the "sarcastic" laugh but in this instance because he finds it more funny and he's not trying to laugh as much it comes more naturally.
No what I mean is that it shows that Richard didn't need to do that much acting when filming IT Crowd to be like Moss, Richard is at some points naturally like Moss :)
Yeah that's pretty much what I saw on first viewing. Jimmy was trying to force a joke and Richard twisted it back on him and he didn't know how to deal with it, you can see in his eyes.
my insight to this bit is that richard gives an excellent example of how to dislocate masculanity and dictate. i love jimmy's wit, but he is too dependent on masculanity imho - with the type of his confidence and his insistence on certain factualities.
really looks like ayoade hates Jimmy Carr (which is fair enough) if you watch the rest of the episode he cuts him down pretty brutally a few times and calls him roger federer and stuff
Richard saving the show from one of Jimmy's crude and obvious jokes. he seemed genially uncomfortable with Jimmy getting close to him but used it to shut Jimmy down. Jimmy found it amusing winding Richard up and was just testing how far he could push it.
Jimmy wanted to do a joke, but unintentionally had set off Richard into his comedy persona and it generated a better joke in Jimmys eyes. He played that he wants to go on, but in reality he was loading Richards act.
"Can this not stop" At this point Richard is getting annoyed!... You can hear the annoyance in his voice, and rightly so. Jimmy Carr is Weird... and was getting way too close.
sunking25 You're misreading him. He's deliberately an anti-comedian. He's killing any attempt of Jimmy's to make a standard joke, and in the process makes for a funnier moment than any joke would. He does this a lot. It's his genius.
+WalterLiddy Very true. If he was genuinely having emotional and psychological damage done to him by working with extroverts, he wouldn't be on TV. Their back and forth here is just too great. :) The whole series is good tbh.
