Two of the actors who most made impressions on the young me. The whole show (BSG) had such chemistry and magic between the characters. And Dirk is correct; the show WAS about a family of sorts. Some of it blood, some of it brotherhood and friendship, some of it persons brought together by tragedy, but in the end, all family. Adama was the kindly, doting grandfather. Apollo was the perfect father figure. Starbuck was the beloved, fun, crazy uncle who would do the dangerous things with you that dad might not. Athena the sister, Serina the mother, Cassiopeia the older girl you had a crush on... I loved them all, and I felt like part of that family watching the show.

This is correct. It was never about space battles or special FX, which seems to be what people are drawn to these days.

So incredible that the '78 classic Battlestar Galactica continues to garner fan support way into the 21st Century. and that has an ongoing comic book adaptation series from Dynamite Entertainment comics, as of today even! Nice that it gets cinema theatrical showings to this very day. And my hats off to the Star Trek Axanar fan production as well.

This video should have been titled Dirk Benedict unplugged with Richard Hatch in the background. Great to see Dirk so open and forthcoming with his thoughts. It's a shame we never saw the original crew reunite for a movie. But as Richard says at the end of the video, Hollywood doesn't care about the fans.

This comment is for folks who might be a little let down by Dirk not just talking about BG: Dirk's monologue is brilliant, off-the-cuff stuff. Funny. Fast-flowing. Engaging. Everything Starbuck was. Get it? You are watching the personality that made Starbuck the awesome character he was...and is. This IS Starbuck--in action. Enjoy.

BSG was “ Star Wars” that we could watch every week. You had to have been a child (or fan!) in 1978-1979 to truly understand the profound impact this show had on so many of us. There were good guys. There were bad guys. There were REALLY SCARY guys (Count Iblis!). And our heroes mixed it up with a them for one glorious season and a TV event/movie. Great characters, great ships, great uniforms, great weapons, great stories, and a cool robot dog. The true tragedy of it all is that they cancelled the show, but then brought it back in a dumbed-down format (Galactica 1980). And then when the show was revived again, it was a dark reboot with gender-swapped characters. The cast was excellent, but none of the magic of the original was there. Richard Hatch had the right idea with BSG: Second Coming. They should have listened to him. If nothing else, it would have been a “cult classic”, and revered by fans. Richard’s promo reel for this production shows us what could have, and should have, been!

His cigar smoking made him real and likable as sure as Lorne Greene was our Grandfather, Dirk was our wild older uncle or cousin we thought was so cool. The suits at Universal couldn't see that every little boy wanted to be Starbuck, bad boy but, very closet sensitive and kind at heart. Katie Sackoff is great, but she was burdened by filling in for the shoes of maybe a "has been", but a surely a legend that was instrumental in making the entire BSG franchise,new and old, what it is. Her character was also way more self centered making it hard to like her. She did a superb job and loved watching her but she couldn't slam dunk it because of Dirk's legacy.

Well..okaaay, but what about his dead pan wit, his flippant sense of humor esp. In the face of danger? That's what set Starbuck apart from everyone else, that smart-aleck comic relief persona of his, a sarcastic point of view that mocked the seriousness of Cylon menace and threat of his people's elimination. Richard Hatch the wholesome straight man and Starbuck the clown paired together was an amusing situation I thought.

Find the Rotten Tomato comment if it is still in the up about how they made Starbucks more macho than Starbucks ever was as a male character. Part of his quote says that Starbucks wanted to flirt and chase girls (figuratively) and play cards and drink and smoke his cigar. He loved to fly, but was not such a fighter as the female Starbucks. He points out that Starbucks is happy waiting for the alert, playing cards and telling stories and drinking and snacking. He was the charming male that offered girls and women a good time if they were willing. Starbucks had no need or desire to push attentions onto the girls. He never chased the underaged girls. However, his character is widely regarded as a toxic male, so not factually supported.
@eastlynburkholder3559
@eastlynburkholder3559 4 года назад
Her character is damaged. She is bitter and determined and predestined to do this thing and she brings a likability and heaer to the character that 998 great actors out of 1000 could not bring to it. Her character was less held back by the sexy male previous incarnation of the character than by the way her character was written.

Little did Richard know that just a few years later Paramount sued the production of Axanar with a cease and desist order because they did NOT give permission for the production to happen because it became less indie and more main stream due to all the actors connected to the production. The production would have had to charge to at least get their money back and Paramount said, "NOPE!". What's funny is is that CBS owns the rights to Star Trek as a television series and Paramount owns the rights to Star Trek in theatrical release. And since Axanar was gonna be a movie, that's when Paramount stepped in and killed it.

I love _'Battlestar Galactica'_, Rich and Dirk but, interesting as it was to go down Dirk's personal memory lane, I really wanted to hear about their memories *_regarding the classic 'Battlestar'_* show, not a monologue about smoking cigars throughout the years... Oh well... Still love these guys and _'BG'_..
@RiverOfBlacklights
@RiverOfBlacklights 8 лет назад
***** How's it going? Yeah, don't get me wrong, I found what Dirk was saying to be interesting in it's own right but, I really wanted to hear about his and Rich's recollection about the classic series. I wanted to maybe hear some humorous things that happened behind the scenes. Maybe some never before heard of stories involving some of the late actors with the series (Colicos, Greene, Astaire, Mcnee etc. etc.) as well as other actors and actresses. I agree that the global situation has gotten to the point where we are all sitting on a powder keg that is about to go off and no government or military faction will be able to prevent it. It is unreasonable to expect or assume things to remain the same. Something is going to give and when it does, humanity and the world as we know it is going to go through a *_major_* change, unheard of in history. Have a good one as well...

***** The BSG documentary? Yeah, I watched that. Awesome video. I will seek out the blooper reels. Thanks for telling me about them. I guess we'll just have to wait 'til some other interview to hear about those things. Everything is falling into place just as it should in order to bring the global change that this world needs and no world human government, militant group or religious order is going to stand in it's way. The clock is ticking down while most of humanity goes about it's daily life in blissful and willing ignorance. Have a good one...

@@RiverOfBlacklights So, 4 years later and the powder keg is still secure, it seems. Not sure if you meant a political powder keg (nations, hemispheres), social powder keg (men and women), religious-based powder keg, human rights upheaval, economic melt-down (the rise of cryptocurrency)... it is challenging to see what bizarreness humanity will be tasked to muddle through next! The Coronavirus/COVID-19 impact has been transformative enough and the trial of a Police officer and policing in general continues, it is hard to predict what 2021 through 2025 will bring -- but there are undoubtedly plenty of people engaging in speculation right now.

Tell the truth. Yeah, it did not help his career. On talk shows, he was skipped when the camera scanned left to right or right to left when sitting with the others on show promoting appearances. The camera would moved horizontally and then make a rainbow like curve to not catch his facial expresions and bodily expressions.

@@denniscosteajr.128 second reply to you. DIRK BENNEDICT was smirking and looking sarcastic and the others had expressions appropriate for morning tv. Boring and we all had fun making it and mild expressions.. This was when that network was ashamed of its hits and was tryimg to be classier like a different network.,and so forgoed profits of Battlestar Galactica and A team and went after the more erudite audience members. Well fun and cheesy as it was called later was like printing money back then, but the network 'went a different direction towards shows like Cheers'. However Cheers was a show I felt that succeeded despite its formula or frame. The writing and acting made it. Had they been vaccinating kids or building houses or selling toilet paper, those actors soukd have been worth watching. The actors respected thise characters in cheers and dud nkt sink winknat the camera or phone it in. When Sam was stupid, he went all in. When a female character hit angry it was powerful and not like a teen tantrum. Norm the post man was funny either lines. Lots of the jokes were about people sitting in the bar kf working in the bar saying that the others in their life make no sense and he saud this and I said that and he saud this and what was I supposed to say to that? Good writing based upon characters. The A team and Battlestar Galactica were pushed out like on an assembly line but they had appealing characters and character based plotlines and interesting stories . And the actors had chemistry.
