It's because athletes nowadays have all the data on how to use their bodies to the fullest extent, they can now push their body to 99% (and higher) of its capabilities at all times. Because they put so much stress on it (due to them pushing it to 99%) all the time, they have less room for error and thus injuries are more likely and more severe.

My biggest issue with shortening the season (outside of getting less basketball) is that younger teams/players will have less of an advantage and it favors vets and stars. The less games played, the less opportunities young and/or overlooked players will get. Injuries are apart of the game unfortunately, but injuries also give rise to other players getting chances to shine. There would be no Jordan Poole if Klay didn’t go down. Tom Brady would have never have gotten the start that led to a Super Bowl… yes, we never want to see a star go down, or anybody for that matter, but that’s apart of the drama of LIFE, and it makes the stakes that much higher and ultimately more beautiful and rewarding.

Richard is 100% right on this, everything is pretty much working in favor for the players while wanting to get paid so much money. One-and-done (or possibly eliminating this to let 18 year olds come into the league), load management, less physicality, and soft mental make-up, etc, it's f'n insane. The league and the team owners need to come down and let the players know that they can't have everything go their way.

@JonnyLin7
@JonnyLin7 Год назад
You mean the multi-billionaire owners who generate billions of dollars in revenue every year due to the players aren't being fairly treated and are getting the short end of the stick? I get that what Kyrie and Simmons are doing is silly, but less games in a season makes perfect sense. Less games means more rest, less likely to have injuries, more meaningful games and players can play harder. Even though players make a ton of money and health science and technology has come a long way, we're seeing more injuries than ever before because the game is faster and requires more athleticism. If we can risk of season ending injuries that's a huge win.
@MistaP13
@MistaP13 Год назад
@@JonnyLin7 it’ll mean less money generated for the teams and league in the long run. I’ll be shocked if they willfully shorten the season. It boils down to economics. Injuries are going to happen regardless of the amount of games played. The guarantee contracts give the players leverage to act like Kyrie, Simmons and Kawhi.
@JonnyLin7
@JonnyLin7 Год назад
@@MistaP13 Sure that's a factor, but it could also lead to more revenue long-term. Less injuries, less players requiring rest and a more meaningful competitive regular season could lead to higher ticket sales and better TV ratings. I'm not 100% certain this would happen, but more games does not always mean better business outcomes. NFL has a much much shorter season and still generates more revenue than the NBA right now.
@cowsaymoomoo
@cowsaymoomoo Год назад
One thing he also didn’t mention is how massive of a negative impact it would have on the guys who aren’t stars in the league. The guys who are still trying to establish themselves would have less opportunities. I feel like a majority of players wouldn’t want this, because it’s only beneficial for the minority of players in the league that the NBA already coddles (which RJ was spot on about).
@mattlau95
@mattlau95 Год назад
RJ makes a lot of sense to me here, but I’m curious to hear more details about the reasoning behind all this. He did mention they add a mid season tournament then that could add a lot of games to a refusals season of 82 games + a long playoffs run could be another 4-28 games. The one thing I can empathize as a fan is that maybe less games, with scarcity there may be more value in watching a game, but then the whole record book gets messed up and everything. Will be keeping an eye on this storyline for sure.

what an absolute thing of beauty from Richard. He has every right to be upset as a former player and athlete. And he made completely understandable arguments. AS an athlete , it is literarily your JOB to endure things that other people cannot do. Otherwise, every NBA 2k player could probably play in some form or way. People truly need to toughen up here. And it's kind of absurd to say this, but : if other people were able to do it for what now is multiple generations WITHOUT the amount of data and information about mental health, nutrition etc, then those players should seriously consider to stop complaining. And I applaude Richard Jefferson for standing up to this!

Then, seed all 30 teams 1-15 in each conference. Then, do a round robin style play off. 1 vs 16, 2 vs 15, etc. When you lose 2 games, you are out of playoffs until we have 8 teams in each conference. Then, you reseed based on round robin playoffs. It there is a tie, use regular season records. This will lessen the incentive to tank. Also why is it taking 6 DAYS to PLAY 2 GAMES?

Richard hit the nail on the head. Injuries will always be a part of the game no matter what, that's just what it is. The league can exhaust every measure to mitigate them, but that will not completely eliminate injuries, especially for injury-prone players (Embiid, AD, and Kyrie). Players have more access to nutritional resources than ever before and more power than ever, namely when it comes to their own bodies. If they're injured, they should not play. If they try to play through it, that's on them. I'm cool with players resting, but if they're doing that more than playing or simply not taking care of themselves, they have no excuse to complain. I understand where RJ is coming from but I also think the injuries are getting out of hand. Maybe the players today are softer, that's one take, but we have actual facts to support that more players are getting injured. There's more to this than just the players being soft. The game is faster. Players are running more now and less fouls and timeouts are called so the players rarely ever rest during an actual game. The game is played at halfcourt with players fighting through screens trying to find and open 3 point shot all the time. All could be factors, but the game itself has changed enough to explain the injuries with that. Maybe the game that the NBA has become is not as suited to 82 game seasons as it used to be. Again, because it's so different than before.

I think the NBA needs to keep the season length the same and remember that because of COVID and the way it affected the timing of seasons that that would have a ripple affect for about 3 or so years going forward on guys bodies based on how they stopped mid season, then finished the season late, started the next season quickly with the schedule being crammed, and then having to start the next season at the proper timing to get back on track. All that change is hard on the athlete body so I think that contributes a lot to the amount of injuries we’ve seen. Give it another 1-2 seasons and I feel we should be back to normal. My suggestion would be to shorten the first two rounds of the playoffs to best of 5 series instead of 7 but I imagine the NBA doesn’t want to give up any playoff money so they probably aren’t going for that.

For me Adam has a point, the physical and health of each player here is a bit advance compared to 90s tho naturally the 90s have the most endured body but since tech helps out as a factor it affects todays health physically too. So 82 games to shorten games is i. guess 15% reasonable Additionaly why this is 15% only is that compressing the season into shorter games would reduce also rest days as i can see. What a rebut by Rj

All I know is Jordan played all 82 games 9 times and the other times, he played 81 or 79 barring the retirement season, and his second season where he missed 64 games with a foot injury. These players are being coddled at every chance and they still don't put in the minutes. Wilt averaged 48.5 minutes one season and played all 82 games.

Kobe Bryant played the rest of the 2010 Playoffs after suffering a bone fragment injury in his foot. Kevin McHale had a broken foot from January of 1987 season and played through to the rest of the season, including the NBA Finals. Joel freaking Embiid, a player TODAY plays through torn thumb ligament and broken face. Injuries have been and always will be a part of the game. It's only an issue now because most (not all) of the players today take rest off on minor injuries instead of playing through it which is what older players did, and players who actually care about winning, does.

No disrespect, but the fact that there's even a consideration for a shorter season in the NBA is ludicrous.
