A few years back, a scientist proved that the current spate of injuries can be directly correlated to 2 factors: 1. The ever increasing number of AAU games leading to wear & tear injuries at a younger age. 2. Fewer players growing up NOT playing 2 or 3 other sports, which would normally build complimentary muscle groups known to aid injury avoidance. If the NBA can create its own AAU type circuit with about a third of the games (I have read up to 9 games in 1 weekend?!) will have positive long term health repercussions. The hard part is getting the kids to play other sports competitively before turning pro.

Makes sense. My nephew's had several players on their baseball teams with bad knees at 10 and 12 years old, catchers specifically. They had bad knees because they played club ball year round after the school season, and sometimes within the season and they chose which games to play in.

When I was in little league baseball my dad forbade me from throwing curveballs and certain pitches/styles like submarine and sidearm because of the long-term effect it would have on the arm. NBA doesn’t suffer from too many games, it’s the ridiculous AAU schedules. A rookie now has way more mileage on their body than a rookie 30 years ago. Of course there’s more injuries. NBA has had 82 games for nearly 5 decades. It shouldn’t change.

Same thats the entire point. But the solution is the NBA should find ways to actually slow the game down (ie hand checking and increased physicality) so that the players arent so tired and at risk from constantly making athletic plays. This happens in the playoffs and the result is usually a lot better to watch
@alananderson7903

As it stands you can (and the majority of fans do) take a couple months off watching basketball and feel like you miss almost nothing. This is not a problem in the majority of other sports and it's because they have less games so every game matters significantly more. If you shortened the nba season it would be a similar effect. the only legitimate argument there is against it (which rj also brought up) is how it alters history and many records automatically become unbreakable but this has happened many times in the past as a result of rule changes and I don't think it's a good enough reason to stop progress that would help the game overall.

@@imamfakhruddin1015 That's not how it works, dummy. Look at the highlights. The traditional post up plays was invented far before Chamberlain time with George Mikan. They don't shoot as fast as they can. And Magic Johnson highlights are full of fast breaks because that's his strength only Magic can pass like Magic to create such offense. The reasons Ben Simmons is an all star are the fast breaks. It's much easier to score on breaks now because you can't touch the guy. It just means the quality of basketball is going down. Fast breaks exist today, they're no longer highlights because nobody can pass like Magic. Stop making horrible excuses that don't actually makes no sense logically. When you having to fight through contact every possessions because the defender can push you, that's far more tiresome than doing a dribble handoff. Don't confuse your fantasy with the truth, pal. Go study basketball and some math as well. In basketball today, nobody is always moving. Even if you run a play, only 3 guys are involved, and most of it involves moving only one time. Watching the half court offense of the 1986 Celtics show this quite well. The movement is the same.

One of the reasons the NFL is by far and away the biggest league is because they play so few games a season. Every single game matters so much more. This year, we get the Suns romping through everyone and finishing with a double digit game win lead and when it comes to the playoffs they're out before the Western conference finals. Each team plays the other twice (home and away) - 58 games, and then - have a one game knockout format. Every single game is a Game 7 where your entire season is on the line. Once you trim it like this, you can add an additional tournament to be played at some stage where the conference winners get a first round bye, and then all the teams play a single game knockout tournament. The team that wins it all just has to win 5 games in a row. It would make it more probable that a traditionally smaller team can finally get some silverware. It can be an additional trophy to win during a season. Then we'll get the greatest teams winning "the double".

They fill up for Kyrie, Kawhi, and used to for Ben lol. So while JJ is right that 99% of players are truly professional, it’s the 1-2% too guys who move the needle.

JJ makes an excellent point about how the game is now much harder on the bodies of players. However, the main reason to shorten the season is to keep the game vibrant and relevant. With everyone addicted to their smart phones, 82 games are redundant. Many are boring. People lose interest. The general public finds alternative ways to amuse themselves. I think after consulting with marketing people, Commissioner Silver will shorten the season, but also add a Christmastime tournament of some sort. The NBA will not wait to evolve, while baseball will be diminished greatly in status.

If you allow for players to constantly get their way in another 10-20 years the players are gonna be complaining and asking for a 40-50 game season with the same pay. It’s not a good trend. Basketball is not a physical sport in the same category as football and other sports. An 82 game season is not demanding too much from athletes. If they could do it with the limited resources they had in the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s, 2000s. Then they should have no problem doing it in 2020s.

You’re in the minority of people who think these players should play 82 games but only watch about 25 throughout the duration of the season .. there is no reason to play 82 games .. if a team plays every team in the league twice that would be 62 .. what is the additional 20 for ? Divisions don’t matter in the nba so there’s no excuse that can validate a team playing someone in their division 4 times. You guys don’t make sense

"Not demanding too much"? That's easy for you to say. Comparing those NBA guys to us is like comparing an Indy 500 car to a Budget Rent a Car. They are much bigger, have different musculature, and can do super human things with their bodies. Hence, the running game that JJ alluded to puts a great deal of strain on their bodies. They break down. I went to a Lakers game in the1960s. The players were smaller in mass, no weight training, and in general not as fast nor quick. They could handle the strain of 82 games better, because they applied less force to the game, and to themselves. But the main reason is that too many of the 82 games are boring and meaningless in a society dominated by smart phones.

There's no way the players and owners agree to a pay cut / less revenue. The fans will pay for this, make no mistake about it. More expensive tickets, more expensive merch, more expensive streaming options. No business on Earth would voluntarily slash their own revenue by 10-20%, and this is ignoring the impact it would have on all the other stakeholders that are involved, to name a few: Local communities and government, broadcasters, advertisers, employees who are not players, etc. The NBA also has a global strategy that spans decades, less games affects projected growth. All so that players can have more days off while still taking days off on top of the 5.5 months a year most of them already get off.

Excellent points, but you miss important key elements of the trade-offs. We've seen injuries skyrocket in the past decade. SOOOOO many teams either missed the playoffs or didn't get far in the playoffs because of numerous injuries to STAR players, let alone various role players. The product on the floor is not as great for the fans as it could be, which I'm sure affects ticket sales/merch sales/brand equity/etc. The players are the most important asset that the leagues have. Without the players, you have nothing. Teams don't enjoy giving massive contracts to players who miss large chunks of seasons or entire seasons. That's already lost revenue. It might actually be more cost-effective to shorten the season than to have a full season with so many players sitting out, missing games, ruining their playoff hopes.

J.J. brings up a good point about the pace the game is now played at. Compared to the 90s, it's not as physical in terms of players being able to put a body on one another and give hard fouls etc. but the off court training which is now year round, level of conditioning ala Pat Riley level and the pace that's expected of them to play at puts possibly even more stress on their bodies and increases the risk of injury than the 90s when the Barkley's of the NBA could get away with eating Big Macs and going for a jog now and then. To me, the main issue should be how does the NBA create an exciting, competitive game whether that's the regular season or playoffs? Why should we as fans continue to buy full priced tickets to games where it's uncertain if superstars will play or if they do play, give full effort? With new technologies like blockchain, maybe fans could be reimbursed if say a superstar like Kyrie misses a game.

I don't think you shorten it for the players health. You shorten the season because it will help with fan engagement and ratings. If there's a 58 game season every game matters so you get a better product. Also if fans know you're only going to see your team play another great team once or twice a year you're much more likely to tune into that game or go see it in person. For basketball to grow it has to shorten the season.

There are more possessions because teams are running down and quickly chucking up 3-point attempts, either making it or missing it, and immediately running back in the other direction. Over and over. Sure there are more possessions but more possessions doesn’t equal harder possessions or more wear and tear on the body. All the analysts are against the shortened season, so where is the energy coming from with this shortened season idea? My guess is that it comes from the fans. All we hear about in the playoffs is how beat up these teams are from the long regular season, and we notice that teams slack a lot in the middle of the season because games don’t matter as much. Try shortening the season to 64 games and suddenly each game becomes slightly more important, and star players won’t get so beaten up throughout the season that they fall apart in the playoffs. We all get bored watching teams phone it in during the regular season, and one of the reasons the NFL succeeds with 1/5th of the games is because every game matters. Borrow some of that thinking and apply it to the NBA and good things can happen.
