I was 13 in 1979 when this aired. So many wonderful things about this: the genius of Pryor and the wit of Carson. Donna Summer was the star singer on the radio and the Pittsburgh Steelers were NFL champions. The best of times.
Richard could read the phone book and it would be hilarious. He had the amazing ability to make anything funny by the way he said it. Anything except "hold up that funeral and let the beer truck go by."
A Song For Dee Vee Yeah but its always difficult to watch Carson struggle with the obvious discomfort he feels with Richards "blackness"....im sure other people see it too. Its cringy at times.
I absolutely agree. It seems like at some point in the 90s that these interviews started to sound too rehearsed. I've watched numerous Carson and Letterman interviews from the 70s and 80s as well as some from Dick Cavett, Merv Griffin, and Mike Douglas and they all sound authentic and real- there would be lulls of course but it all sounded genuine at the very least.
Mhm. With the old Carson and such, convos are a lot looser. Obviously there are talking points but, man...modern talkshows just slam the segue right into the next topic like a brick wall. They get done plugging a movie and out of nowhere a really specific personal topic, "So i heard you were teaching your daughter how to ride a bicycle!"
Mr. Carson, You were and are the best of all late-night TV hosts. You set the standard for all late-night hosts, and I feel sorry for the hosts who have come after you. I grew up watching you and hope to meet you some day. As I'm over 70, our meeting is getting closer each day. Dan
“Richard Pryor: Live in Concert” was the FIRST time a film was released of just a comic doing a stand up routine. It was VERY innovative at the time. Pryor kinda has his “Bustin’ Loose”, “Stir Crazy” look here. It’s interesting the film was called “Family Dreams” later renamed “Bustin’ Loose”.
He is so right about the treatment of the elderly in hospitals or out. Today people seem to idolize "first responders" and others like tv and movie stars and such. Well these people all get old and then they are dropped like a sack of potatoes. Other cultures revere their elders and should. In the U.S. they are treated like shit. The budget for elder services should be higher than the military budget. Kids want everything and want it now but it shouldn't work that way. You hear Richard Pryor say he's been in the business 20 years and has worked every day. It doesn't come easy you have to work at anything you do. When your time is up you should be assured you will be cared for with dignity. We are all assured of one thing after birth and that's death. Respect your elders and care for them until they pass on its only right so let's start to change things in this country and make our elders want for nothing.
Young people are angry at older people (and vice versa) because the opportunities for a decent future are shrinking. Rather than blaming the system that has taken more and more away from ordinary Americans, and enriched only the very wealthy, Americans resent everyone over (and under) a certain age. This is a society that views most people ultimately disposable, and it is tearing the country apart.
I watch Richard Pryor and Robin Williams now from when they were young and I get depressed. Miss them. My favorite film with Richard Pryor was silver streak when he played the waiter on the train. He killed it.
I agree Richard is up in heaven loosing up the lord a little The lord created Richard And is enjoying the clean, truthful, playful Fun God is great and his creation will never stop giving me belly- busting laughs What a creation PURE P E R F E C T I O N GOD HAS UP THEIR THE GREATEST LINE-UP OF COMEDEINS PRYOR, WILLIAMS , CARLINE, DANGERFEILD & CARSON WHAT A BUNCH AAEEEEE!! HIGH OOOOOOOOO
The movie Pryor mentioned that he was going to work on called “Family Dream” with Cicely Tyson actually turned out to be named “Bustin’ Loose,” released in the spring of 1981. Pretty funny movie
Thanx muchly for sharing this little gem, Archy! I saw it 'back when', and it's still such a great interview. Nah. Make that, a great interaction. I'm crying. I don't know if it's because I miss these brilliant, beautiful men, or because I'm laughing so hard. Probably for both reasons. I've been watching, and enjoying Johnny since his first Tonight Show from New York. I recently saw Richard in the movie he was describing here. Actually, I had already seen it in the theatre first-run. They changed the title, and released it as 'Busting Loose'. I highly recommend it. Richard was so wonderful in this. He was fabulous with his many dramatic moments, as well as his comedic ones. I do miss both of these gentle men. RIP, Johnny and Richard, and thanx so very much for the magic, music, and memories. (edit for typo)
I love seeing them shake hands and greet each other, it's a beautiful thing to see in time where that doesn't exist anymore. Genuine greetings for someone you enjoy seeing, its beautiful.
It's amazing Johnny C, died on January 23rd 2005. And Richard Pryor died 11months later December 10th 2005 they really dug each other. You could tell by JC"s interview with RC he rarely talked with guess during commercial breaks.. well atleast that's what Jerry Seinfeld said on his Nexflix show comedians In Cars Getting Coffee ☕
Il cachait bien son vice de la drogue vraiment magnifique ons dirait vraiment qu'il est normal bravo Richard Pryor repose en paix Amen 🙏🙏🙏 cordialement 🇨🇵🙏
Is fantastic interview. I love all these old Carson clips. Sad how Richard talks about wanting to live and be healthy as he smokes his cigarette. People didn't get it
@@loriraymond6789 he was and always will be a comedic icon who gave inspiration to countless comedians who still strive to be as impactful as he was. Yeah, he had his demons like everyone else. He spoke truth about life. Drugs. Racism. Sex. Relationships and everything else in between. He was a realist. He always spoke about his own misgivings. Haters hate the truth.
Lori, Lori, Lori... If you weren't so dull-witted, you would have recognized the obvious; that I was praising Pryor's comedic genius, not his lifestyle choices. ~ Maybe you better check your IQ.
To me Johnny Carson was the best talk show host in his time. I am black I just couldn't get enough of Johnny Carson. Loved the skits he would do the best yet can l get amen.
Dearest President Trump, I am a nobody. I am fly-over material. Yet, I demand an audience with you. One of the many callings that I missed in my 61 years was that of "mediator." I have some of the answers you seek. Fly me there, or here, or wherever. Let me spill my guts to you for the good of this country. Peace out, Name of Jim, as in "...name of Pete..." from the 'sirens' scene. Please God Almighty, make this go Viral.
Fascinating. I've watched.. BACKWARDS.. all the JC appearances starting I 1983. HERE.. he looks absolutely healthy! And YET! Even in the 1980 appearance he's cool. Man.. total BS! Probably high here.. ☻💥🔥🔥🔥
Clearly Carson absolutely loved Richard Pryor. But he was very loveable inspite of his sometimes raunchiness. Pryor was true to himself; and loved for it.
