Its so incredible how humble he is, first off the bat he was complimenting Bette Davis. Considering how his life began and everything he went through he still pays respect to those that deserve it. Even bringing the walking stick on the show so the man that gave it to him in Zimbabwe will know he still has it if he watches the show. Come on now, that's just cool of him to do.
Wow, it is crazy to think of pryor being starstruck by anyone but seeing his nervousness and reverence and respect as he slowly turned to talk to Betty Davis was so real and amazing. That made my heart happy
in 1983. and she was an old skool starlet. silver screen golen age days. even she was alright sitting next to a black man. we have not managed to come very far have we.
@@always_markb I believe we've come further than a lot of people think. Unfortunately, as Booker T Washington said back in the days of Teddy Roosevelt's presidency, there are those who have made a living and a profession out of keeping greivances, real or imagined, front and center where blacks are concerned because they can make a living from doing so. They don't want things to improve because if they do, then they lose their wealth and income. Racial harmony exists to a greater degree than a lot of people think - but you'd not know it by watching the media because those types of stories don't sell and don't attract viewers.
@Nice guy your statement is true but doesn't reflect population, the info on there murders etc . In the end it's not the race when it comes to crime though , it's education, employment, economic, family, and add a hundred more categories. A corrupt government just makes it a 100 times worse , zuma should be shot
Pryor was very smart, starting off by first turning towards Bette Davis and giving her a big compliment. After that, Davis was all his, not to mention being hilarious in her own right. "That look" and firing off lines ... perfect! It was damn near magical watching the interplay between these three legends. "Unfortunately Lois Lane was wearing a kryptonite coil..." Best line of the night, Johnny!
Johnny delivered that line perfectly. Two icons of entertainment stopped entertaining and just started laughing. That was awesome. Comedians live to make people laugh. Obvious, I know. Once they were laughing so hard they couldn't talk, Johnny must've thought "Got 'em."
@Snaggle Toothed We had Miami Vice, A-Team, Sledge Hammer, Knight Rider, Wonder Years, Alf, Cheers, Moonlighting, Married with Children and many more. Just because you're young and have a fetish for GOT atm doesn't mean it was any worse back then.
Betty sitting up there like a boss smoking her cig. Richard seem like he had so much mental clarity during this interview and he's so handsome. So refreshing.
This clip has moved me to tears...such fantastic human beings. As my vision blurs..something else comes into focus-a true sense of awe for the character of an era of human history that I feel so lucky to have been alive for and a palpable sense of loss-not only in the passing of these entertainment giants and of my my own family and friends..but also the loss of character and respect our nation had for itself and the world at large that seems to be deteriorating more with each passing day. I do.believe that the human race has made great strides in many ways..and in general we evolve to be a better species..but as I watched them all stand as the show ended..Ed and Johnny buttoning their sport oats and then Ed helping Bette with her overcoat and Richatd standing deferential to her as she got squared away....just wow. My hand reached out as if to hold onto something that has now evaporated. I can't thank you enough for this clip and the reverie it has left me in..just....thankyou.
Thank you for visiting my beloved country. People say Zimbabwe has changed but i say no we still a safe country and the economic situation didn't change our hearts. We still great
you all probably dont care but does any of you know a method to get back into an Instagram account..? I was dumb forgot my login password. I would appreciate any tricks you can offer me
This is a masterpiece. Love Richard Pryor and Johnny Carson. Two of the greatest together, having fun & showing such great respect & admiration for each other.
Finally, a place on youtube where people have nice things to write on the message board! Can't understand the 5 people that would go out of their way to click the thumbs down. This is a great clip of legends.
Pryor was not perfect -- nobody is -- but he's still one of the best comedians there ever was. I'd rank him in at least my top 5. If you read anything about his childhood, it's amazing he turned out as well as he did. A lot of what he said in his act is still relevant today. I don't sense the BS you get with a lot of comics today but he was funny AND relevant. The guys today usually aren't either. I wouldn't say Pryor was a "family comic," either, but he had his own thing that he did better than anybody else.
Clinton Fischer Well said Sir Classy.! It’s a shame People 2Day recognizes or See Greatest Like this.. Pryor, Carson, Davis, & McMahon.. All gone Nothing Like this will ever happened again
That is an incredible trio of talent on that stage. Three absolute legends. And I love how she didn't sit there and not interact. It was brilliant having them all interact with one another.
That was very nice. The spontaneous humor was there. The respect and appreciation was there and an overall nice feeling that stays with you. Thank you very much for showing this
This was a gem of an interview for me. I can remember this like it was yesterday ... I was 11 or 12 when Richard/Gleason filmed The Toy in my home city of Baton Rouge, LA. I got a chance to see him off set. Very gracious, humble and had time to talk to his fans. They filmed all over historic parts of the city (State Capitol, Goudchaux store, Indian Mound and on Scenic Hwy). The movie was awful but I enjoyed all of the various sights and being able to meet Richard in person as a kid. Good times. I miss Richard.
As a grateful recovering addict & alcoholic, I can ttooooooootally relate to his meaning of him changing, along with his energies changing as well. If ever there was a proper context for the term "spiritual awakening," it's soon after having gotten sober. To me, the entire world was completely different, in every way. I was the real me, as Richard was becoming once again, the real him for the first time since before he started using. This episode was real!
Amazing people on the same room, their chemistry together is so enchanting, legends all three, we won't see the likes of Carson, Pryor or Davis anymore folks. I'm very grateful to you for uploading these clips.
Richard Pryor was the greatest comedian ever, and he was honest enough to tell everyone he had a drug problem, not like some of the overrated boring celebrities who pretend that their lives are nearly as perfect as their whitened teeth and fake tans.
No. Sam Kinnison way more talented. Sam was a Super funny comedian, a great guitar player, a very good piano player, and the no 1 comedian in the USA selling out every show in Vegas when sadly a drunk driver killed him. Sams album was also a hit. The first true rock and roll comedian.
Loved Richard Pryor! Hysterically funny and so honest. Johnny Carson would double me over with some of his skits. I was surprised how funny Betty Davis was. Always loved her work.
My siblings and I were kids in the 80s. We absolutely loved Richard in superman 3. That movie gets such a bad rap but to us it's still gold to this day. Richard was great! Rip.
This episode rocks. Everyone is on-point and sharp, Johnny is witty and guides the conversation beautifully. At the end Johnny says, "Hey, this has been fun!" That goes for us watching, too
I actually had the good fortune to have met Mr. Pryor on three occasions. We both had been raised in the Peoria, Illinois area. But somehow, for some unknown reason, he was just a wee bit more humorous than any of the rest of us could have ever dreamed of being! Myself, along with a bunch of friends were blessed to have seen Mr. Pryor for his first ever appearance on TV via "The Ed Sullivan Show" , and although he was hilarious, it was nothing compared to his naughtier humor yet to come. Before he made it to Sullivan's show he did stand-up comedy in small clubs. Each night, before those earlier shows he use to shake like he had shell shock. During his very first stand up show, someone had the kindness to hold and rock Mr. Pryor in order to calm him before his set. In fact, it became a custom for someone to hold and rock him, as one does for a baby, until he calmed down a bit. You would never even know he was nervous at all when he was on stage, he was a great actor even then. There will never be another Richard Pryor! You are truly loved and missed old friend!
When I was little I used to wait till everybody else went to bed then get back up and watch Johnny Carson I thought that man was the funniest seeing him and Richard Pryor and Miss Davis has got to be one of the best things that happened today I love you too this is awesome
Man Richard was legendary. But I ain’t knew Bette Davis had a sense of humor. All her movies were so damn serious!! And here she is cutting up and clowning on tv. This is priceless 🤣🤣
Richard Pryor in Zimbabwe and got a Royal traditional walking staff...wow. I also loved how he described the atmosphere of Zimbabwe. Well said, by a real Legend.
He looked so good here. I never thought Richard was ugly, I always thought he was handsome. But there's a different element to him wearing a goatee or beard. He looks even better, I think.
I like this interview because not only Richard Pryor was on it, but also Ms Betty Davis. I like her. Richard is humble and very polite. I like the chemistry he and Johnny Carson have. Johnny Carson is my favorite host of all times. There's no body better than him. Miss everyone on this video. May they, R.I.P. 1-22-20.
One of my favorite movies from Richard Pryor was "The Toy" watched it over and over when i was a kid..Me and my brother still to this day consider it one of the best comic movies made.I sure miss Richard Pryor he was so real and one funny man..
@@mr.enigma4475 Eddie's whole career was an homage to Richard. Even playing multiple characters in a movie. He had his own talent but used Richard's career as a blueprint. Both amazing in my book.
You're absolutely right. Let's not leave Redd Foxx out the equation either. Heavy influence. Eddie was the torch bearer for the legends before him. He did right by them too.
It is WEIRD...! I never knew they shared a Tonight Show spot together but I thought Davis complimented him Pryor on at least telling Johnny he was sick and couldn't make it the one time! And she did seem supportive of him when she admitted she felt uncomfortable watching her own work, too.
God; I miss the 1980's! Johnny Carson was legendary! Class personified! Richard Pryor was a masterpiece of a multi-talented comedian! Miss Davis was legendary! This is when network television was golden! As a kid growing up in the 1980's and living now in the present 2018-2019, I terribly miss the 1980's/1990's! The world/society, the human condition was way better before the horrible: Instagram/Twitter/Facebook and this whole disgusting "social crap media"! God bless the souls of every one that is in this classic episode/show with Johnny Carson.
Do you really mean Bette is white and Richard better shut his black ass mouth?. I kinda get that vibe from your statement. I could very well be wrong about you.Meboneme. if so I apologise.
Part of what made Carson's show great was those interactions on the couch between people who normally probably wouldn't be sitting together. She wasn't butting in on 'his time.' They were there, together, on a couch, like humans spending time together.
It's crazy Dave Chapelle had a similar life experience, at the top of his game, labelled by many as the funniest man alive took a trip to Africa just to get away (2019 viewer)
Thanx muchly, Archy, for sharing this little treasure! I saw it, way back when, and I thought their interactions were so wonderful, just perfect. Richard being awestruck to meet Bette, and thanking Johnny for telling people that he was ill when he had to cancel his appearance on the show, and Johnny thanking Richard for calling to let him know, and Bette's wonderfully disgusted 'Chahhh-ming' comment. And their so natural, nothing put-on, interaction during the rest of this clip. I'm crying. Not sure if it's because I'm laughing so hard, or because I'm missing them, and the times, so much. Probably a bit of both. RIP, darling Johnny, Richard, and Bette, and thank you all so very much, for the magic, music, and memories.
Richard Pryor is one of my favorite comedians of all times. He went through some challenges but bounced back with grace and respect for life. His grateful attitude shines. He was a funny guy and made me laugh in my gut so many times. I want to thank you sir for your many hilarious performances. Rest in peace Richard Pryor.🙏♥️👏
i just watched this episode a few weeks back. So happy to see that it is uploaded here. Thank you! Those first few minutes are the best. Bette is a hoot.
