His bookish character was a major fan favorite. He shocked the world when he left and was replaced. He only returned for a few episodes and TV movies later on. Richard didn’t take the decision to leave the show lightly. He didn’t want to leave his Waltons family, but he did have to leave the John-Boy role behind if he ever wanted to have a full career. He eventually managed to do just that. He wasn’t the type of actor who only wanted to play one type of character, and he hasn’t. He’s had hundreds of roles, from TV shows to touring stage productions.
It took years of discipline for Richard to keep from stalling. That, combined with a willingness to follow his own path, helped him avoid being pigeonholed. Nothing could keep him from being recognized as John-Boy, but he doesn’t mind. He’s proud of what the show did and how it made others feel. He was simply ready to leave it behind after so many years. The ironic part is that Richard was never like his character behind the scenes. Even his costars will tell you that he’s boisterous, funny, and loud thanks to his city upbringing. It only goes to show his talent that the world believed he was such an introverted loner raised in the country.

I would say Season 5 was one of the greatest when John Boy cleaned up that shed next to the house and starting running his own paper The Blue Ridge Chronicle with Ben helping him out even though he drew outrage from nearby citizens when he printed up articles on Hitler he stood by his beliefs but he cared about his family also.

“Berlin Tunnel 21” (1971) was an excellent movie and Richard Thomas was excellent in his role as US Army officer, LT Sandy Mueller.

Not long after he left the mountain, he played a role that was not very Walton, in fact he was the villain! He was so convincing to me that it clouded up all my best Walton memories! I can't remember the movie tho. I can't recall if he played a rpist or a killer? I did tune in to see his returns to Walton mountain every time, but alas my love for him was never the same!

I feel for recasts, especially when the original actor is so strongly identified with the role over a long period of time.

@svahas That seems to be the prescription for breaking from a solid wholesome character like John boy. Andy Griffith went the opposite direction of Sheriff Andy Taylor, when he played an evil psychopath in a movie (I can’t recall the name) about a group of guys adventure motorbiking across Baja, Mexico.

My favorite is when he portrayed Hank Williams Jr in the Hank Williams Jr story. People would be so surprised by his acting genius capabilities if they watched the movie. Hank Jr. wasn't that excited to have John Boy portray him but he later said in an interview I watched that Richard Thomas blew it out of the water.

Actors really ought to come down from their ivory towers. Securing a role on any stage, be it a humble local theater or under the glaring lights of global fame, is a stroke of sheer luck. And by luck, I mean being the director's preferred choice at a very specific moment, possibly influenced by the exact amount of caffeine coursing through their veins that day. Add a dash more cream to their coffee, and their opinion might veer off course entirely. Sure, honing your craft through endless acting workshops and having a headshot that ticks all the boxes is important for seizing the moment when it knocks. However, history is rife with stories of individuals who stumbled into the limelight without even dreaming of an acting career, finding themselves at the right place, at the right time. Once you snag that coveted spot, cling to it with all you've got, regardless of its magnitude. Swelling heads and inflated egos have no place here. Relish the present and harbor a sliver of hope that fortune might smile upon you once more. Hollywood is plastered with the remnants of one-hit wonders, and with an ever-revolving door ushering in fresh faces every second, the audacity to expect a second act in the spotlight borders on folly. Indeed, there are rare gems like Tom Hanks, whose enduring appeal might as well be attributed to a certain je ne sais quoi rather than mere acting prowess. Many directors shy away from casting household names, often bowing to studio pressure craving the safety net of a recognized face. So, if you're an actor lucky enough to land a paying gig, latch onto it for dear life. Your odds of capturing lightning in a bottle again are slim to none. In a realm where novelty trumps familiarity, the elusive quest for repeat success is akin to finding a needle in a haystack.

@@FactsVerseThe one where Mary Ellen made a mistake cleaning out the shed to have vern haul it away and with it was a typewriter John Boy was borrowing from the Baldwin Sisters. Well, once M. E. realized what happened she did some serious footwork, covered a lot of places and set things right by getting a typewriter for J. B. that was a great episode.

I Agree. Robert Wightman as far as I'm concerned just didn't cut it as John Boy. I'm surprised he was in the 3 movies after the series end. Great part is when Richard Thomas returned for the final 3 movies in the 90s.
