Song writing at its best.... and for anyone who doesn't know what he's singing about n just likes the song... "dad" is Baghdad... when that clicks the rest will fall in place at ease ...
Found Richard Thompson due to SOA. Listened to the rest of his music and I'm hooked. His performance on the BBC's acoustic sessions is fantastic. Richard's a genius.
I'm amazed at the people who are cussin' Thompson for writing this song. If anything he's expressing what these soldiers went through. If questioning the integrity of the governments or a badly biased media is traitorous then the guys who came up with the acronyms "FUBAR" and "SNAFU" would be considered to be traitors as they came up with these during war time to describe how bad things were. If anyone should be on the hot seat it should be the people who suckered into this war. Two chickenhawks named Bush and Cheney. Both were draft dodgers during Viet Nam and both are closely tied to the oil industry. That's who you go after, not RT. He's doing his usual wonderful job of showing things for what they really are.
+mark drum they are blind stupid cannon fodder and deserve whatever the military industrial complex throws at them. if those lackwits had their way and shouted down dissent under the "patriot" excuse, anyone who spoke out against wars would be in their version of guantanamo. that shit should be challenged at every opportunity.
Every time I come across something like this it reminds me how much good music is out there that I miss because I mostly listen to the radio. Thank you internet.
Man. This song gives me crazy goosebumps. Every. Single. Time. Breaks my heart yeah, but it says so much about resiliency and strength too. As a vet wife, and someone whose friends are all mostly married to veterans too -- I can relate all too well. Beautiful song; so glad to have discovered his music (late to the game but better late than never).
One of the best thing SOA did was get this mans name out. I saw him live twice as a kid because of my dad. 1952 Vincent black lightning is a song i play every time i go anywhere. Kudos to SOA for getting his name out there
One of the last playable homemade cassette tapes I have is Fairport Chronicles. This thing was recorded off a turntable somewhere in Oregon in 1982. Years, decades later, in a room alone in New Jersey, I'm watching Sons of Anarchy. This voice, this guitar, I remember the sound. Come all ye.
Strange, most people here know this song from SOA, as if it's the first time they hear about Richard Thompson. Good for him, finally gives him the acknowledgement he hardyly received for the past 40 years of brilliant music and performances.
Eleven years on he's still touring and he's still utterly brilliant. See him while you can. He can't go on forever. I saw him twice this year. Fantastic.
I saw him on 10/17, it was a solo acoustic 2 hour set. It was absolutely incredible. Although I listened to him for a long time he really blew me away. It seems like he's with a band when he's alone. He's a master. He also did a freaking triple encore!
well im not American, but sure as hell we have our own Dad here... SOA got me here, but im glad about that coz this song it one amazing piece and for sure i will be listening to much more Thompson things in the upcoming days
Because the jingos in the US and UK weren't about to let something like this achieve widespread distribution. The fucking Dixie Chicks were too militant for them.

at 4:09 Richard gets to riff after running this incredible story through. RT has been playing for 50-60 yrs, the man is a genius, I just love his stuff. if you're a guitar player, you're gonna love discovering his music, he's got shredding riffs, lovely ballads
Last 10 year i have heard so much new music to on TV. That movie's can't ever come to close even. Meaning, SOA, True Blood, SPN, The Walking Dead, Peaky Blinders to name.
didn't know this song before S.O.A, but I'm glad I know it know. Very good song. I pray the Lord for all those soldiers that are overseas protecting our rights and freedom.
I have come here from watching (live streaming on RU-vid) a tribute show tonight for David Bowie, Union Chapel , London. It was awful. One or two exceptions. Had to come and find something like this. This is wonderful.
Anyone who found themselves here because of SOA, do yourself a favour and check out this guy's back catalogue. Maybe start with 'Shoot Out the Lights' or 'Rumour and Sigh', though every album has gems. My personal favourite, 'I Want to See the Bright Lights...' may have a little too much English folk influence for some, but is a work of absolute genius, Alternatively, check out his performance of ' Cooksferry Queen' on Later.
Great song, great live playing. Hard hitting irony of a young man in Iraq , fearing his Dad will be angry at him for joining the Army. The guitar playing evokes all the anger, fear and violence.
Great song.. I had heard of Richard but never really -- listened. Heard it on SOA and bought the CD for my husband for Christmas. He has had it in his car where he listens to music a lot with his job and it has been in there ever since. .
First saw him do this solo in Dublin 4 or 5 years ago and his introduction was fantastic "Before we go any further how is your imagination?". Then he painted a picture of a band behind him and what was going to happen and then he launched into "Dad's gonna kill me". Great memory thanks for the post
This is the tip of the iceberg for RT. No two of his 46 albums sound the same. He is also the nicest, sweetest and most modest man on earth. And I have had breakfast, lunch and dinner with him.
Sons of Anarchy brought me here. Served in the Airborne and went to war twice. Love this song, Dad can't kill me as he died two years ago. So sorry I let you down Dad.
saw RT about 8 years ago at the Hardly Strictly Blue grass festival in SF..Ive got to say for the 2000 peeps that were at that stage had no idea the S--- he was going to lay down that afternoon...i'm sure there were newbee sorts packed in to see the guy that they probably new little about...but this was his last song that he did that afternoon and i have to tell you what he did on that stage that afternoon literally left all of us speechless, the birds and the trees were even swaying to a different sort of rhythm...that guitar solo was something i had never heard before... people were moving but no one said a thing just moving to the twanging of his guitar with their mouths open rendering their thought process to a numbing sort of movement....My God R what the hell was that all about that day....A Transportation for all of us. By the way thanks
It's a custom Telecaster style guitar made by LA-based luthier Danny Ferrington. RT refers to it as a "Ferringtoncaster." He owns a number of Ferrington guitars, both electric and acoustic.
Funny I was just listening to "Accoustic classic" and I notice he has ommited all the stuff that came after "Persuation" maybe there is a part 2 on the way. Having said that "Street warrior" was always a favourite album of mine there were so many classics, thanks for reminding me
My dad recently got me into Richard Thompson and when I saw him at the Roundhouse a while ago I was hooked. And this is one of my favourite songs by him that I've heard which to be honest isn't much. But I hope to change that soon. =]
He has had a brilliant musical journey. Great player, singer and song writer. Comfortable with or without a band. I would say he is a national treasure but I don't think he likes that!
just watched first episode of SOA and damn this song together with this ending song realy made this episode the best SOA episode ever ! Great song thanks for uploading it !
You know, Taras Prodaniuk's no slouch either. Danny Thompson's playing just connects with my heart. I was incredibly honored to hear him play with Richard, the zombie string section and the rest of the Cabaret of Souls Band last weekend.
