Finally got around to it. Thank pearlmuth3 who sent me the recording. Enjoy. San Francisco. James Levine conducts. Transposed half tone down. Pictures are of Tucker, his wife Sara, his sons Barry, David, Henry.
I'm tired...no long commentary today.
Not bad for a 57 year old, eh?

Strange why they spammed your comment, wasn't me. To answer your question, no, he didn't speak the language at all but his diction in it while singing was almost like a native, according to the Italians themselves. del Monaco said he sounded like a native Florentine.

Of course there's more to the music than the high note. I prefer his renditions when he was more lyric, but those renditions didn't have the ridiculously thrilling high B that this one has here. This one is among the best high Bs I've ever heard on record.

Truly a beautiful performance. Tucker sounds youthful and athletic, His Italian is impeccable and I love his spinto quality for this aria. ursmue statement about artificial emotion is nonsense. This is an interpretive feeling that the tenor expresses, just like his favorite tenor would do at times. Each tenor brings their own interpretation to an aria that makes them unique.

I used to post under "pearlmuth3" (as you see German opera singer's comments above) I sent "German Opera Singer" my tape of it, Ihad taped it in the Audience on cassette, German opera singer posted it for me here.

Tucker was age 56 here, consider his age when you hear this live tape and compare with him singing the complete role in the 1950's, he held up very well with all the singing he did in 30 roles.

Beautiful high B and orchestration. Some artificial emotions but still a touching performance

Yeah the way that B just swelled was gorgeous. Again, for the age amazing.

I was there, in the S. F. opera house, for this concert with Arroyo (they then sang the act ending Boheme act 1 duet, ) I talked to Richard briefly on the phone that afternoon at his hotel, he was saving his voice for the performance and whispered to me as he sometimes did before he sang a long concert or opera, it's interesting to compare this with his Met. 1957 Brdcst. at the Met. of Boheme, in this aria, also the complete Brdcst. is on you tube and also his 1952 Boheme radio Brdcst in English, the aria is on you tube, and his voice then at age 38 was more Lyric, and very beautiful, but always had plenty of power up top in house and the voice stayed full, big and rich up to the very top, as though a plane landed in your living room. I've also seen him sing live, the high C in house, even in his last few years , he died at age 61 in 1975.

it is... i hate marginalizing things down to high notes (might not have guessed, considering my two extremely popular Greatest notes videos :-D), but this B was just extremely beautiful, i didn't want to say anything in my previous comment.

Exquisita claridad de tonos , sublime fraseo, Squillo infinito perfecto para dicha edad, su voz nunca fue voluminosa , pero su proyección y anillo definían el arquetipo de tenor lírico, aunque en ocasiones spinto !Bravo!

I agree, the castelli does sound a bit emphasised.

Some good high notes are not relevant, it seems to me almost a feat of strength. Some artificial (2:21 ) emotion effects, I do not like.
