this is exactly what I missed: rick being actually the smartest person in the universe and having tons of props and intelligent mechanisms to defend himself or get what he wants done. Now it's all just an old guy with gadgets trying to get jokes done
he is not as smart anymore, and I'm not talking about he made the gadgets = because he's smart.
