@@baronvonsatan Well of course, it's an opinion alright! To answer your question... my fingers were guided by my impression of Adam. More specifically, his condescending attitude towards tuning up or down. He claims it has no effect. But as we all know, it has been done many times by many artists, tuning down a tad or slowing down the tape, when they feel the result better suits/reflects the "vibe" of the song. Some composers have transposed by a semitone or two for this reason, but Adam thinks detuning 30 cents has no effect. AND he has a douche attitude about it, and THAT's my main criticism. I have to vehemently disagree on that point, detuning 30 cent makes a difference. Hence my opinion.

Jaco was one hell of a composer. Jaco was one hell of an improviser. He openly aspired to be *both* and blew the ceiling off of it all. To be a great improviser you have to be a great composer because you are composing in real time. None of this is mutually exclusive at all!

yeah me too! And I also liked the direction this went, with Rick explaining this analysis, they both agreeing that the key being the same is weird, Adam recognising the podcast's story might be a cover-up in advance... I toured with BS&T in '75 (mixing stage monitors) when Jaco was in the band, and I was lucky enough to jam (drums) with them when Bobby Colomby wanted to go out to the house mix station to hear the band. It is an absolute fact that Jaco never played *_anything_* the same way twice. He played whatever he wanted to play, partly to keep himself engaged and interested, partly to challenge and stimulate his band mates, but mostly just because he couldn't help creating. It was PLAY for him. This all happened before Jaco became...you know, The Jaco Of It All-a legend. I didn't know any of that was going to happen. All I knew was that he was the most intense, incredibly focused, spontaneously...no, wait... *_explosively_* creative musician I had ever met. He also frequently kicked my ayuss in racquetball. It made me a better racquetball player; jamming with him and watching him play, up close, night after night, made me a better musician. That's what true greatness does to those who encounter it. BTW, Rick & Adam, I watched this straight through. When two cats who have separately earned my respect on their own merits get together, of course I'm gonna watch, and the appearance of the name "Jaco" in the title sweetened the deal considerably. 😎

@Vito_Tuxedo 2 года назад
@@skierpage I know nothing about the Facebook post, nor did I intend any of my comments to make reference to it in any way. If you inferred a connection, I did not imply one. I simply stated my observation. As to whether Jaco "worked out his solos in advance", I never saw him write them out, nor did I ever see him bring any charts on stage. I guess it's possible that he thought about them in advance, such that he had a general concept in mind. He certainly had that facility in his relationship to music. So, I wouldn't rule out that kind of "advance" preparation; however, my comments weren't intended to speak to the "in advance" issue. By way of context, many of BS&T's songs were set up as frameworks for jamming. Bobby hired some great jazz players, all of whom had great improvisational skills. No one knew what anyone else what going to do in advance at any given gig. They all just listened to each other, and took their inspiration from that. Just how much any of them-including Jaco-may have done any advance preparation is unknown to me.
@Vito_Tuxedo
@Vito_Tuxedo 2 года назад
@@charlescoleman6896 There may have been cassette tapes of the house console mix. The house mix engineer on that tour was Al Tucker, and he frequently ran a stereo feed off the board into a cassette deck for the band to listen to after the gig. If those tapes still exist, they're probably in Bobby Colomby's library. The last time I spoke with him, he was a VP at Capitol Records in Hollywood, but that was probably 30 years ago. I dunno where he is now.

I remember when I was in high school I was taking some jazz improvisation piano lessons with the music teacher. A lot of the homework was along the lines of work out five different ways of moving from this chord to that chord. After a while I quizzed the teacher about this. I complained, I thought we would be doing improvisation, but it seems that all I'm doing is memorizing stuff. And isn't that the opposite of improvisation? His response to this was that to improvise effectively, you needed to have worked out a gazillion short patterns, so that in the moment you could map the feeling of where you'd like to go to a sequence of notes that will actually accomplish that. That these memorized micro movements were the vocabulary that you could then use while improvising. And the richer your vocabulary, the better music you can make. This may or may not be how the good players do it, but it made a lot of sense to me.
@mrtyreus0

It's definitely one school of thought. The other is to understand where those patterns are derived some and then create your own.

My bet is that he worked out the chords to fit the melody (bare with me) - obviously not consciously, but subconsciously - like, those were the melodies going through his head as he composed the harmonic changes. When it came time to throw down the track, they were there in his head because that's how his brain worked out those progressions in the first place. As time went on, he experimented with it as professionals do - and, of course, that would explain the outtake. Who knows?

I actually hate it. I'm very sensitive to unbalanced audio so it's pretty irritating to hear. Panning in music is okay when it cancels out (e.g. effects bouncing around quickly like stereo imaged reverb or delay) but otherwise when one ear is noticeably more fatigued in either pure dB or even frequency-wise (e.g. kick drum or bass panned to make one side bottom-heavy), I have to render to mono if I want to give it a shot

I can only hear out of one ear so it's all mono to me
@nicholastessier8504
@nicholastessier8504 2 года назад
@@jeffryarchambeau5441 Oh wow, do you have equipment/software to render everything mono, or do you just miss out on the missing ear's side? Also, do things sound imbalanced in that you only hear from your "left" or "right" side, or is it all "center" to you?

If you're compelled to make music, do it! Your ideas are just as good as anyone's. Use the musical knowledge you have and get creative, but keep learning. Most popular songs are only 3 chords and a catchy melody, after all.

Listened start to finish. Love both Rick and Adam. I grew up a classically trained trumpeter, but started playing bass as I graduated high school. Learned the "basics" of theory, but never the complicated stuff. Both Adam and Rick have a way to make it all where even my dumb brain gets it.

I watched the whole thing, Rick! I've learned a lot from both you and Adam over the last several years. Even when you're not talking specifically about theoretical or technical aspects of music I'm still learning from you. It's just amazing how you bring such a broad spectrum of knowledge to the public basically for no charge. I'm a little older than you rick and I don't ever remember anyone being as generous with their music-related knowledge as you are. You're a good man. Much continued success!

You both have excellent channels. Interesting, technical content. Rick's "what makes this song great" vids are wonderful music appreciation classes. I hear things in music I've been listening to for 40 years now that I never heard before, and Adam's vids are sort of sciencey. The love and knowledge of music is amazing, contagious, inspiring. And I made it to the end - why would I not?

I did watch it all the way through since I subscribe to both channels. The talk about Jaco did make me think about how my improvisation of solos evolved throughout the years in the studio. I used to practice and improvise with other musicians but found myself wanting to cut the fluff where the solo should be so there are very few boring spots. After years of studying music theory, I stated playing over the recorded section repeatedly until I have about 60-80% of what I'm going to play memorized and then hit record. That way it would at least have a beginning, middle and an end that works within the context of the song. I remember hearing stories of how Frank Zappa would grill his band to pay attention to the leads they hear so they know whether to extend parts live by hearing if it sounds like it's beginning, going or ending.

I absolutely love all the comments you guys have both made multiple times about the desire to return to live tracked albums with the whole band in the same room. Especially in improvised music, which needs that energy to be captured. Advances in technology and manufactured pop music have made us so obsessed with perfection as a culture that we have forgotten that all those little flaws are part of what make the music human. Great chat, guys.

Yes, watched this to the end, because Rick, you and Adam are two of the most important and best music education video makers on YT. These collaborations between YT creators are great. Can't get enough. Watched and loved the Neely video about Vulfpeck and Jaco with the Scary Pockets guys because it's a fascinating music topic with musicians who really know their stuff, and do awesome music videos. Rick, your interviews with Sting, Seal, Carter, Di Miola, ect. have provided invaluable insights into these stellar musicians process and experiences; because you know how to ask the right questions and give plenty of space for the subject to answer. Great video guys! Looking forward to the next one.
