@@througheverything Exactly, which is one of the criticisms that Rick had. No one sits with an album and just plays it anymore. Sure, the song is overly jarring by itself if you randonly heard it or it popped up on your Spotify playlist, but its made to be heard in context of the album. Not always, but context does matter in this case.

I think a lot of the assumptions about Rick being a boomer who hates modern music just comes from the culture in his comments. If you watch his videos where he takes a look at the top 10 most played spotify tracks, he's actually very fair to a lot of the newer pop music and you can tell he's not going into those wanting to shit on tracks, but if you look in his comments, it's the exact opposite attitude in there.

His titles and thumbnails on at least his top 20 pop song videos often portray the music as terrible, and the comment section is full of oldheads who talk about how music was better back in the day and that new music sucks. The comments on those videos are always rancid. It genuinely makes me think what these people want modern music to do. It's a catch 22 - music strays too far from their comfort zone = noise. Music uses basic structures = unoriginal. I get the feeling they want what they like but new, which is basically impossible, lol. And there's things to not like about modern music but the fact that songs are short is not like the downfall of society
@user-lv6mu8er9z

@@man4437 People also rarely mention that there is really just as much to dislike about every era's mainstream music and they've just bothered to remember the stuff they like. I never comment but when I see two of the guys who have introduced me to so much awesome music join together for a talk I cannot help but to take the chance to say thank you both! And I think that the apathy of the average listener to seek and enjoy new sounds is a very complex matter: there's first the drive to do it, a hunger mixed with a sense of adventure that leads you to new stuff that is not you or your taste anymore but that it absolutely enhances you as a human being; then those findings you make in your quest for music inspire you, among many other stuff, respect, and it's this respect and obviously the curiosity you have that make you take really seriously this artistic expression that you're experiencing, and to consider carefully the message of the artist. For me it's not about the mediocre songs/artists, or the mere manipulation from music platforms (given that we all have agency in our lives) but about conformity, lack of drive and passion that so much people apparently wallow in. But then I can't not see that I'm judging that from the place of my own passions, which cross through my life and gives it meaning... There seems to be little capacity to leave one's place of comfort, but if there's one thing that I'm sure about is that everyone's passionate about something and it's a little thing that keeps living there, latent, waiting for just the right time to kick in.

@@ckf36 it’s just his personal experience banded on proximity to his own kids and their friends. And he’s pretty right. I had quite a hard time finding other people in real life I could connect with when it came to music growing up, and I still frequently get milk toast answers from people when I ask them questions about music they like. If you don’t live near a bigger city, it isnt as easy to find people who like what you like, musically.

I'm 24 and I agree with most Points made in this conversation. In my experience ( in my environment ) people around me never really cared deeply about music. If they do its mostly 1 band or 1 genre and thats it. I always struggled with sharing my passion for all kinds of bands, ranging from Khruangbin to Tool back to KRS-One and Ikimonogatari. I dont feel like alot has changed in my time of living, that's why I appreciate both of your Channels and Opinions regarding music but also the internet in general. Back when I was a kid i never got to listen to alot of music neither to talk about it with people

This reeks a little bit of "le wrong generation." I'm about the same age and I started a band as early as middle school with my friends who were listening to stuff like A7X etc (def not exactly pop music lol). Music has stayed an important part of my life and same with those who I associate with. I hope you're having more luck now :)

As a 27 year old who truly loves music, I can definitely say the shit I listened to in highschool was nothing compared to the stuff I was listening to when I was 23. As for now it's still completely different than both. I think it's really a power struggle, to know, keep relevant, in a loop of what we truly love. Every person has their own taste and you can't just shove whatever amazing track you know down anybody's throat and I learned that a couple years ago. Getting older now I can see what I used to love fading from me, that's why I bought a guitar and also write. In the position you two are, the influence you have can keep that passion alive as work. I still dedicate myself to new music for hours on end at least 1-3 times a month and I respect others that do as well. But I know one day my 1995 born ass will be old screaming you kids don't know shit about kiss, then play some Kanye right after it. Lol. Cool vid! Also the first cd I ever owned. MBDTF at 14 years old. Use to sit with my ears so close to my computer speakers cause my dad hated rap and when he'd walk by I'd turn it down cause I thought I'd get in trouble. I hid that cd. How things have changed.

I think it's interesting that we talk about record shopping like it was some staple of human nature that got lost with this generation. We had music before and will have music after the industry goes. The communal, historical, and identity developing aspect of humans will manifest in new ways. Don't bet against the youth, they're the future.

I think some of us around the age of 30 are in that sweet spot where we enjoy music like a few decades ago, meaning, listening to an album like watching a movie, to get to know the characters, reading a bit about them, and enjoying the whole experience like we used to when we bought CDs. But then, also being able to access a vast library of music for a really affordable price. I'm sure some younger people will get that experience from their parents or older brothers or something. I hope the next generations don't let the idea of the album die, which is kind of happening in some genres already. Maybe I'm completely wrong and whatever comes after "the album" is even better and cooler; right now it seems like the playlist is challenging that concept, ever changing playlists curated by the platforms themselves to keep them fresh. I think that's cool too, but it doesn't replace the album, it's a different thing.

But during the day it's mostly Western Swing and Honky Tonk, though sometimes I still play the Pixies, the Breeders or QOTSA. I really need to find some more current music.

I think the ready access to any type of music from any genre of period also puts a lot of responsibility on the listener to curate their own tastes, which is great but also causes a lot of anxiety. Studies show the more kinds of salsa available in the store means less purchase of salsa overall, for example. In other words, choice overload, as well as sensory overload due to short form online content and video games.

One of the things that makes it hard to find new bands for me being a Gen Xer is artists are able to do the DIY thing and releasing singles and EP route. I am looking at full album release lists going to Spotify or RU-vid trying them out and buying vinyl, digital, or CD. This like was mentioned kills the algorithm for me. My last Spotify year in review the top song had one play and was a track from the last album I played. When I discover 'new' bands many been slaving away for years and taking the time to get their song perfect. Now that touring is opening back up some of these bands are looking for labels and releasing a physical product. Like you guys mentioned hopefully the label doesn't ruin them.
