Eddie himself was pretty great and one of my fav singers ever. I blame the knock-offs for ruining that vocal style and turning it into a parody of itself. With Eddie it sounded very natural (prolly because the anatomy -- of his cheekbone, jawline, nose, throat, mask and tongue was super suited for it) and powerful because it had heart. Plus it fit the music and lyrics so well. But with Scott Stapp, Bush, Shaun Morgan, Chad Kroeger, f*ck me you know the rest. And we all know the story. It just became this stupid, marble-mouthed, straining-on-the-toilet singing thing that is really one of the worst trends that ever happened in popular music.

Blaming Eddie Vedder for the imitators that followed Pearl Jam’s success is weird; are people blaming Ian Curtis for the guy from Interpol stealing his style? It’s so weird to blame the person who was ripped off for people ripping them off.

I dont think the shade was deserved though - his voice is pretty great imo, and adds a lot to PJ'S songs. Of course the rip offs deserve scorn but I don't see what's wrong about including Vedder on this list.

THANK YOU! Sinatra is iconic and influential, but his technical ability in terms of jazz is just pretty good. Ella Fitzgerald was a master. Really calling a sinatra a jazz singer doesn’t make a whole lot of sense, he never improvised, like ever. (Like solos, I mean)

Quite the opposite, Ella is iconic BECAUSE few can do what she did.

Frank has the reputation he has because of the time he made music and because of his race and gender. He has phenomenal style but when it comes to singing there are a plethora of singers apart from Ella from his time that could sing circles around him.

100%. I wouldn't expect him to be there for Bungle or Fantômas, but Faith No More had huge singles and records back in the 90's where Patton really showed his vocal prowess and width of talent. But then again Layne also isn't on the list nor any rock/metal singer that is even remotely alternative outside of the very obvious picks like Cobain and Cornell. Just a massive overlook.

Tom Waits I believe was on their previous Top 100 Greatest Singers List. He was placed at 83rd I think. Crazy how he wasn't included in this one considering the character and flexibility of his voice.

I was so made about some of the other nonsense on the list, I didn't even notice Bruno Mars was missing until now. That's how terrible this list is.

It should be all over the place. If it was just a list of the most technically gifted we wouldn't recognize most of the people on the list.

@Matejko108 wouldn't learn anything interesting. Being technically gifted is only a small part of what makes a great singer. That's why you use a range of parameters.

I really don’t know what the criteria is if Mike Patton wasn’t on the list but ossie osborne is. Don’t get me wrong, I love Ossie, but I think we can all agree that he isn’t a great singer

I was so surprised not seeing Layne here. Could replace Eddie for sure, and should also place higher than both Kurt and Chris imo. Layne is an insane singer, Love Hate Love great example.

Mike Akerfeld too. Lists like these generally ignore any metal subgenres outside classic 70s metal and maybe NWOBHM which is a shame because there's some incredible vocal work in the extreme subgenres. Even if they'd just included one or two as a nod to those styles I'd have been okay with it.

But lists like this are inherently impossible to manage, Sissel Kyrkjebø is one of the greatest Norwegian singers of all time, but it feels unreasonable to expect the authors to know who she is, even though her vocal ability is much better than many of the people listed, but if you haven't lived in Scandinavia then you've probably never heard of her. I feel like this problem will always exist, but that it's better to make lists in narrower categories. Like most important singers for rock and roll history, or just singer-songwriters.

He's definitely not as good as some others on this list tho, idk bro. He makes good music but I think he's a little subpar as a vocalist, even when you compare him to his RnB contemporaries. The Weeknd absolutely blows him out of the water for example.
