You are right this was the JAMM back in the day. EVERYONE was blastin' this in L.A. with the tops down, hollerin' out the windows at the babes......Rick was a solid musician. The song is not about a girl, it was about WEED. That is what the boi's called it back in the day. When this came out it just solidified the nickname. I loved this song as a pre-teen! I didn’t know what he was really singing about until I was older! Mary Jane was rumored to be about weed but I thought it was about a girl! Rick James was very talented as a musician, song writer, producer, singer, etc! Prince reminds me of Jimi Hendrix but I can see how you guys can see him in Rick! Rick James was a superstar!! And yes this song was in heavy rotation. Rick and Prince did a tour together and there was some bad feelings btwn the 2...it was enough room for everyone cuz we loved them both.

My friends ran a DJ night in the East Village of NYC in the mid-late 90s called Mary Jane. It was also not so much about a girl. But every night started with this song. And I handed out old school Mary Jane candies. Also, this is now one of my favorite Twins reactions.

My niece is named MaryJane. I played this song when she was about 2.5 yrs old and I said "Listen they're singing about you!" and after she heard her name she said "HEY!! THEY REALLY ARE SINGING ME!! WHY ARE THEY SINGING ME!??!" I hadn't thought about what to tell her about that. But, I thought quick & said "Bcz you're so cool!" Which she accepted no problem of course. I love my MaryJane.
