I really love the look of this bass and as I 5 string player I'm happy that these are available now. But I would've still loved to see how it would look with the usual fretboard and pickup cover. But with the same bridge and pickups as this new version.

Installed the Hipshot bridge on my 4003 as soon as I got it and not regrets, also removed the bridge pickup cover and installed a thumb rest mod that covers the resulting gap.

Rickenbacker basses are really unique and if you pair one with a Rick-mindset, they're classic. While a Rickenbacker won't work for every time, they'll add "that touch" to a great arrangement.

Wow I have been searching for a five string Rickenbacker for 20 years wow that's amazing I wonder if I will ever find a 5-string Thunderbird I know they made them at one time but they seem to have disappeared

I own one these basses in Fire Glow it's a well made great playing bass, versatile & addictive to play , the single coil triangle pickups pay homage to the Shark fin fret markers on the 4003. My 4003S-5 has come to Rival 2x American made Fender 5 string jazz basses in my arsenal as well as my Jet Glow 4003 & to purist I say try one out before you judge.

@@ianslee4765 You're right, but I have to say that sometimes it's really practical even if it's not absolutely necessary. A lot of players could probably get by with 2 or 3 strings, but most wouldn't want to.

I think it’s a cool looking bass. I stopped playing my 2 1973 4001 basses back in ‘87 when I switched to a 5 string. I would have gotten one of these. By the way, Chris and Paul didn’t play a 4001S. There was no such model at the time. It was the export model sold by Rose Morris as an RM1999.

David Schwab- Paul did play a 4001S. He received his from FC Hall personally in the United States. He didn’t buy his through Rose Morris.

I keep coming back to these since they came out. What continues to keep me from pulling the trigger is the lack of shark fin inlays, classic Rick bindings, and finish options. I could probably get past the last one but the other two were so important I got a Jackenbacker but the sound obviously falls short of the Rick.

I'm probably the least traditionalist rickenbacker player of all time then lol. They just came out with that new signature model with the 2 pick up covers and green inlays. And the new bridge design is honestly an upgrade. I still have the factory bridge on my rick, and while I love the classic look, the newer bridges they are coming out with beat the old ones by a long shot. And I've also played the new 5 strings, I love the new pick up design for sure.

My non traditional ass needs a lefty version Haha.The warm rich sound from the maple is refreshing. I recently purchased a j-bass that has a Maple body,neck,and fretboard. So fast and smooth. I can't get over how much I prefer the maple fretboard.

It is quite bad ass. My 5 is set this way. It allows for a more melodic range. But takes nothing away, in fact it adds the ability for the bass to rise above it all at times. Great for soloing, and improv. String are a little tighter, but I use DR high beams, and it sounds great. If you're into the deep tones and want that ability, I'd just go with a 6 string. The "B" just wasn't practical for me.so I converted a 5 string.

I've had the 4003, and noe have a 4003w (Walnut). The Walnut versions are a half pound lighter than The standard versions. The satin finish on the neck and body is smooth, not sticky, and simply feels better to hold and play.

I love the playing of Chris Squire, Geddy Lee, Mike Rutherford etc, so rickenbackers are one of my favorites, but I wish they made a 6 string bass

The reason why there are Dot Inlays and Rounded edges was because the original 4001S were made like that. The 4003S is basically a modern version of the 4001S.

I really like it! Shame I don't need or play 5 strings though. If they made a 4 string with those pickups I'd have one in a flash. They sound better to me and the bass looks better without all that chrome imo.

I really want one. I used to have a traditional Rickenbacher 4 string and I got rid of it because I hated the bridge and the horseshoe pickup. It played nice and sounded ok but I hated having the giant horseshoe in the way. This is the perfect one for me

Rickenbacker players are very traditional … well yes … actually freaking backwards thinking is more accurate … it is great to see a Rickenbacker with 5 strings, no mechanical mute, and no pickup covers … that jetglo bass would look better with a maple fret board

At least a Rick with a bridge that makes sense. Talking about traditional basses, if you have One from the 1960's, ok, leave it as it is. But if you want to play, if you use your bass as a tool to express yourself, it should be as useable as possible. You shouldn't have to care if it is traditional or modern, just how usefull it is to your playing and tone. I don't want to have everything "as traditional as possible" if traditional things don't make sense. Like the limited Rick bridge and all those covers that limit your playing. And yes, Cris Squire, Geddy Lee and Lemmy played Ricks. They suited their style, tone and playing. I never wanted a Rick because I was "afraid" of the horseshoe, of the covers - and the limited bridge. And the two truss rods. Now, this 4003 S/5 looks.... interesting. I sure will check it out.

Seems to me that most of the bad aspects of Ricks--weak pickups, crap bridges--have been straightened out and sorted, here. She sounds great to me, and I bet she plays even better for it.

The gentleman playing the bass in this video did a good job, but I would have preferred fewer muted notes. It would have been nice to let the tones of the Rickenbacker shine a bit more. Also, it would have been great if the player utilized the full range of the low B string. Let it ring open and also it's good to hear it played up around the 12th fret and higher. Just a thought. Thanks for posting. I'm definitely intrigued.

Thank you so much for the review, I've had my eyes on this 5 string Ric for awhile. I like the fact that it has a traditional bridge on it as most of my friends that own Rics usually swap it out. Not having the pickup cover is nice too. Overall this version seems more forgiving from a maintenance standpoint which I like and is the biggest complaint from my Ric owning friends, they usually say the intonation has to be perfect or else it buzzes like crazy.

I'd consider myself a traditionalist when it comes to my preference but I gotta say a five string Rick is pretty dope. If Rick ever sells that modern bridge I'm definitely getting it and replacing it with that awful bridge it has. Too bad they don't make these left handed

It’s a standard Schaller 3D bridge. You can buy these without going through Rickenbacker
