I’ve had a 620 since graduation year 1981 , it’s a very good guitar and iconic looks , I have Gibson fender guitars, and I love the ones I have and they all sound great , my 620 is the best guitar for clean rhythm playing telecasters come closest to that sound, 620 is a underrated great guitar!

I ordered my '02 620 with toasters and it's been my #1 ever since! I mostly play Surf music but it can do just about anything, it might make you do it a little differently but that's ok. Great review Jack, thanks!👍👍

Perfect REM tone. The 620 is my favorite body Rock sells. I was curious how the p/u’s sounded especially toasters and I have to say that they sound fantastic. There’s a high end that’s so pleasant yet cutting at the same time. Then there’s the clean tone, I don’t think I’ve heard a better clean tone. Thanks for the video and insights.

The 620 model is my all-time favorite Rickenbacker. I got my first one in 1982! These days I own four of them. A 1977, a 1980 twelve string, a 2002 in Burgundy, and a vintage 625, as The story goes was once loaned to Led Zeppelin for a gig in 1969. The early models, back in the 1960s, continuing till 1982, had the vintage Kluson tuners. I prefer those!

My 620 was made in 1980, and it plays as good as my Gibson SG, but with the Rickenbacker sound. Rickenbackers are really well made, and a lot of people don’t acknowledge that. I took my 330 out of the case after about 15 years, and it still held both its tuning and intonation.

I actually bought Rick620 (same colour as this one) after Jacks initial video of the Rick620. Yes its a great guitar. I spent quite a bit of time after I purchased it comparing the sound to my Strat / Les Paul. I would say Rick620 sound is closest to a LP P90. One thing I've not heard mentioned online... the Rick620 has amazing natural sustain and acoustic resonance. I think this is due to the construction of the through neck and also that its made from maple wood.

I've had my 330 now for just over a year and is it a guitar I'd ever sell? I'd say not bloody likely. I 'm long past the honeymoon stage and mine gets played almost daily. You've done some good uploads about your lovely 620 there Jack as-I'm sure many here will agree-too many demos don't really demonstrate what a Rick is really capable of ,but yours do show that they're more than for just Beatles/Petty/REM kind of stuff and I've found it more versatile than I thought it was going to be as well. Here in the UK there are many players who would love a Rick (you should have seen the envious looks I was getting when I went to pick mine up) but they're a lot more expensive this side of the Atlantic which puts a lot of players off. Still, if I turn up to the local jam night at the pub I know I'll be the only one there with one. You know what? It's just gone 1am here and I think I'm going to play mine for a bit right now!

Think this video will be very much appreciated by those interested in Rickenbacker Guitars as there isn't a whole lot of unbiased reviews out there. Those reviews that are out there tend to compare model to model and year to year. This is a nice explanation of a R as a whole, needed as not a lot of them out there to get hands on to play and listen to. Have thought about the six string Rick (oops, did it) off and on for many years. Have had a couple of different 12 strings over the decades and have a 360/12 now and Love it when playing a 12 string. One day may break down and grab one, thanks to you and this video may have moved it on the GAS list a bit closer to the top (LOL). Take care my friend always appreciate your well thought out vids. Cheers

I use my Rick for jazz (see the video on my channel ;-) ) Anytime I picked up a Rick, I just KNEW it was my tone. I finally got a 360 as a gift from my wife about 9 years ago. I still absolutely LOVE it! I thought it might be the only Rick I would ever have, so went for the traditional hollow body in the traditional fireglo finish. I don't jangle or play Byrds/Beatles etc, but do find it really versatile. Blues/rock/prog (yup, I said it!)/alternative. Everything I need it for, it does.

I picked up a 79' 620 in the early 80's that has been my favorite. I also have the 660/12 which just blows me away and last a 360/6 which I bought just because and I use that as my Telecaster sound. I don't want to do any changes to my 79' so I'll be looking for another 620/6 and will modify with the toasters unless I find a 660/6. I also have a assortment of Gretsch's and a SG... Great review but I already knew they are worth it.... LOL

I bought a 620 a few months ago. I’d had one in my sights for a long time but your vids pushed me over the edge (you saw it on the FB Rick page). I think your assessment is right on the money. I have guitars I use more because they’re more versatile or maybe just more conventional, but nothing sounds and feels like a Rick; ‘woody’ or even a bit primitive but absolutely charming is about right. Toasters are going on at some point I think. Nice chops btw. 👍

@@humorustrout. Sure. I used to have the exact same pickups in both. I have since swapped the 330 with toasters. I think the scale difference has a lot to do with perceived differences in sound. Shorter scale feels different playing so it makes sense the sound would be different.

This is a great guitar, any Rickenbacker looks like a piece of art on its own, and it has a nice natural sound, I love listening to it. If someone wants a stronger pickup signal, they could probably put a stronger dual pickup on this guitar. But I've never seen anyone do this. They just put that guitar aside and pick up another one. I find this pointless, I don't see a problem making this a permanent guitar by putting a more powerful pickup on the bridge here. And for example, the neck pickup can be left original. Then you can get an interesting mixture, why not?

Back when I was a teenager, I wanted a Rick for no better reason than that it was a weapon of choice for the Beatles, the Byrds, The Who, Genesis, the Jam, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and REM. I didn’t ever think about whether or not I wanted one for itself. I used to daydream about getting one and plugging it into a Marshall Stack. How come? Because it wasn’t frequently associated with hard rock sounds. Trying that once or twice when I was in my later teens seemed OK for a little while, but I realized it did not appear that I could make good on it. As I have commented before, real Marshall products have always been more expensive than they are worth. Then, there is the idea that people only want Rickenbacker because of those aforementioned artists and others like them. In both cases, iconography is more important than practicality.
@ManchesterBlackSheep

Ric basses are 10 out of 10, Ric guitars are 8.5 out of 10. Ric basses are virtually perfect, especially the new models with the new bridges, and they can do everything, whereas Ric guitars can do virtually everything, but not everything.

It's about time they changed that crappy bridge on the 4003. The only problem I have is it doesn't allow you to palm mute because of the recessed strings. They seem to be obsessed with keeping up with traditional looks versus functionality. Like the Fender bridge has the strings resting on top of the saddles, the new Ric bass bridge doesn't allow you to palm mute easily.

Jack. I'm sorry. But you cannot play either Byrds or Tom Petty / Heartbreakers stuff with a six string RIC and be legit. The six string RICs do have a lot of jangle but they lack the most important RIC characteristic ... CHIME !!! I do agree, the six string RICs can produce some great dark bluesy tones. I had a 330 for a few years for that simple reason. But I onsold it decades ago. If it had been a 330/12 I would still probably have it. Saying all that, any RIC is more than just a musical instrument. They are really works or Art! Every guitar player should own a RIC at least once in their lifetime. For me six string RICs are like girlfriends that come and go. Twelve string RICs are like wives. You only really want to have one and keep them close until the day you pass on.
