The most iconic figures in sports are on a single named basis in the public eye. Names like Jordan, Ali, and Gretzky are considered by many to be the G.O.A.T. (Greatest Of All Time; at least to present day) in each of their fields of expertise and competition. All are polarizing individuals who have an aura of themselves that places them on legendary status. Within jiu-jitsu there are many big name competitors that stand out, but then there's Rickson (Gracie). Rickson hasn't competed in years, yet he's looked upon by many as being jiu-jitsu's G.O.A.T. It's said that he's undefeated in any type of jiu-jitsu, freestyle wrestling, sambo, vale tudo, MMA, challenge or submission matches, as well as street fights, boasting well over 400 plus wins. While this may be doubted by some naysayers Ricardo Arona, Demian Maia, Paulo Filho, Draculino, the Machados, and countless others have attested to him being on another level that they've never encountered. Upon meeting Rickson for the first time there is definitely an energy about him that you can feel. This along with his extremely personal teaching style and the way he conveys his "invisible jiu-jitsu" quickly make you understand why he is looked upon in the manner that he is.
Though he's not been in the scene for some time now, Rickson slowly began creeping back into the spotlight by cornering his son, Kron Gracie, at a variety of events and now with his backing of the JJGF (Jiu-Jitsu Global Federation). Struggling with what he's been witnessing in competitions over the past few years, Rickson believes effectiveness of the art (which started as a self-defense system) has been lost and is looking to restore it with a major campaign to the jiu-jitsu community through the JJGF (www.jjgf.com).
In this video Rickson speaks about the JJGF, his thoughts on traditional vs modern jiu-jitsu, his lifestyle, returning to teaching and more.

Rickson is the real life version of those martial arts maters in the movies! He does all kinda yoga and meditation shit, speaks like he's a prophet, and is also a total bad ass that's never lost a fight, a real life superhero!!!

Rickson Gracie is not only one of the greatest Jiu-Jitsu masters, he is also one of the greatest ambassadors for the art. I'm not BJJ, I'm Atemi-Ryu Ju-Jitsu which is 100% self defense so I agree with self defense should be the basics of any Ju Jitsu system.

I love Gracie Jiu Jitsu. "Jitsu" is a Japanese term for "combat". Competition is a "way" otherwise considered "do" as in "ju-do". I got nothing against it but face it, we all feel in love with this via Gracie Jiu Jitsu. It is far more important to enhance and amplify the self defense. That competition aspect is lovely but truly adolescent in the real scope of what Gracie Jiu Jitsu is. It is good for the conditioning for the youth, high school competition, but upon more serious considerations like saving your life, only Gracie Jiu Jitsu is fitting for all aspects that life can throw at you.

I saw a documentary bout the Gracie's the other day and I had no idea how much of an asshole rorion was. He made rickson sign on contract before he could speak English that said he gets 70% of ricksons money if he fought in the states (that's why all his fights took place in Japan) also he sued all the other family members trying to prevent them from using the Gracie name or triangle for their own schools that's why ricksons academy was just called ricksons. I also heard that Royce never had his own bank account and rorion just gave him an allowance back when Royce was a superstar winning the early UFC events. ( probably why he just took that fight with shamrock at 50 something!) im glad despite all that rickson and other Gracie's managed to do well for themselves despite douce bag brother

Yeah I ended up finding it. Ryan, Renzo's little brother said something about "Ricksons douchebag brother, the asshole made him sign a contract before rickson learnt english and tried to take all his money if he fought in the states"

every family has their dogs. The gracie family has above 900 members, with a huge portion practicing BJJ www.gracieacademy.com/familytree.asp . So much good, check your own family history I bet you will find your own share of scallywags, bums and crooks. Gracies seemed to only of produced Rorion. Thats a pretty good record to me.
@garagekingofkings
@garagekingofkings 6 лет назад
If that's true then that's a bad brother for Rickson. Rorion is a highly respected Red belt. A Grandmaster who has the respect of many in Jiu Jitsu. Though there are people who say that he is money minded. A little too money minded. It is to be remembered that Helio was the one who sent Rorion to USA instead of Rolls Gracie. Rolls wanted to go and he got the chance too. But Helio told Rolls otherwise and he stayed back till his death in Rio. The Grandmaster wanted Rorion to go. Rickson however has skills that Rorion would envy because he can never do what Rickson could or be Rickson. Rickson was the family champion right after Rolls. Rickson was trained by Rolls. There was also the incident where Roy Harris was asked to leave the torrance academy because he gave an interview which angered Rorion so that Rorion asked him to pay double of what he usually paid there. So Roy left to learn under the Machados. But it is all personal between the high profile guys. Torrance academy had always done well and Rorion is a really good business man who knew how to sell what he had learned. That doesn't make the accomplishments of others in jiu jitsu lesser. And to have the Gracie name is enough for you to make a living teaching Jiu jitsu. So I don't think that Rickson would mind what happened at the end of the day.
@l.blanton3019
@l.blanton3019 4 года назад
That's not to say that they didn't get their proper pay,they may have allowed this because roruan was a better money man,we have to realize they are a family and certain ways we were brought up could be different how they were brought up,NOT to say you're wrong,buy there is a possibility.

a good way for a grappler to see how far his self defense is, is to train at a mma gym once or twice a week. then in light sparring, or sparring you see what works against a striker. I had great experience with it. you will stop pulling guard after your first experience doing that in a mma fight :D
@halcon7000
@halcon7000 5 лет назад
First thing Rickson taught me is not to pull guard in a real self defense situation the second thing is how to stop a striker before he gets to close ..then hundreds of other things .

I'm trying to learn what I can from him, his family and some of their students. I appreciate the vast amount of free training they provide online! Shame on us if we don't learn all we can from it! I'm in my 50's and learning more from him every day. I'm hoping my grandkids can benefit from this knowledge and from training with Gracie JiuJitsu Masters in the future

I think I know what he is trying to say and do. By always being effective/real on the streets the less chances of becoming a "Martial Art Trend" just like Kung Fu 70's, Karate 80's, Taekowndo90's , etc and it will always be the predominant most effective Martial Art.
@Reoagentmi
@Reoagentmi 9 лет назад
There is no "most effective martial art". What makes a art effective is the practitioner, the situation the art is being used in and the opponent. A ground fighter against a person with a knife...bad news.... as an example, in that circumstance I want to be a black belt in 1911, but all jokes aside, everything is relative.

Sport jiu jitsu is fun, but one must train real life self defense. There will be punches, kicks, tackles, bottles, chairs, head locks and crazy shit that we don't ever see on the mat. I love doing slick back takes that look cool, but I realize that I would get my ass kicked trying that on the street. Self defense jiu jitsu is a different thing all together. Distance management, punch blocks, striking etc. all must be learned. I like to watch the old videos of the Gracie Challenge matches in the 90's. It's pure self defense jiu jitsu.
@davibourne3856
@davibourne3856 8 лет назад
Totally agree. Luckily I have begginer fundamental class that teaches you self defense on Jiu Jitsu moves and also I always ask about one way to do the same move without GI if possible.
@Big-guy1981
@Big-guy1981 7 лет назад
You can't "train for real life" because there is no rule in real life. If you want street fighting skills stick with 50% boxing, 20% Muay Thai (knee, elbow and low kicks), 20% grappling and 10% Aikido (mostly fighting an armed opponent). The problem with this approach is that you won't be able to compete and thus improve your technique.
@Seegie16

Why must they. What if they dont care about self defense and just want to play the sport?

The problem is the moves that work well in ibjjf events are not always the best moves in a real fight. I agree with Rickson, no one wants to see bjj lose its effectiveness on the street level. Money is being made and that does cause issues. Our teacher (Paul Carnicella) teaches many police officers in Newark (he is a police officer there himself) and one of our old teachers (Efrain Rojas) can and has beaten many tournament winners (even though he himself has never competed). Still there are schools with 5 times as many students where the entire focus is winning medals (or even worse they are schools where real bjj is not even being taught and the teacher has no lineage at all). A fighter should be trying to win (tap the opponent) not run the clock out because you see you're ahead on points. I am not being a "hater" and I am happy for any schools success. I am not against competitions (my daughter competes and has never been forced to tap in her weight class by anyone, in class or competition, ever. I am really not a person who would badmouth competition) I just understand that to much focus on only competitions can create bad habits. You must know the difference between sport and street, you should learn what to do on the street and be smart enough to not use that when safety rules are in place. I hope this came out right.
@vmbrazilianjj

It depends on your goals, some people want to train just for competition, some guys only self defence, some people both. As long as MMA is around self defence BJJ won't lose its touch

Father and mother are to be respected because they are our first teachers. Why not? Westerners have it all topsy turvy. MOST are raised by disloyal feminist mothers who disrespected and dominated their fathers. If I was Hickson, I'd never teach persons of low character. Such people misuse and degrade the original art of jui-jitsu . In india, where Jiu-jitsu originated, guru will not accept some lowlife with bad character. This should be implemented again by serious teachers everywhere.

He nailed it when talking about sport jiu-jitsu screwing up the martial art of gracie jiu-jitsu. I have actually taken seminars under black belts that said "if you want to learn self defense learn Krav Maga" this makes me sick. I guess so the way they teach fucking useless techniques like inverted guard and 50/50. If it wont work when someone is throwing full power punches and kicks, throw that shit out of my school.

+dragonballjiujitsu True. We learn both at my school. I do agree, it is sad that a lot of schools do not teach self defense or "street jiu jitsu". Dudes trying berimbolos on the concrete and getting smashed, or getting picked up and slammed locking up a triangle. I like to watch the old school Rorion and Royce "Gracie Combative" videos.
@cutthroathb
@cutthroathb 8 лет назад
That's insane, sport jiu jitsu is cool I like berimbolo, del la riva, and other sport moves but schools should first teach the basics before anything especially the whole distance management aspects so if nothing else they can hold someone off without taking much damage and buy themselves time. By the time you reach blue belt u should be able to protect yourself in a street fight against someone who has no training
