I met Helio in 95 at Relson's Dojo at the University of Hawaii. I was so honored at the time to watch Helio teach in Portugeese, with his sons Relson, Rorion, and Royce translating for us. And then the celebration of the new dojo near Hanauma. I have a great photo of Helio and I right after my first tournament at UH. Awesome memories. Humble Gratitude.
@@conformconsumeobey2985 is that why he was standing right next to Royce when they got Pride to remove the loss to a Judoka from their records entirely? lol
@@patricklutherwinchester4260 im glad you asked: marketing, not their martial arts. Because Royce's messy UFC cheating and failed drug test stories are more entertaining than honest fighting. And because Carlos Gracie was a polygamist with like 250 grand and greatgrandchildren lol. That name is going to bounce around a lot based on that alone. The more I see of BJJ, the more I learn, and the more of these interviews I watch, the more bs I think it is. Imagine taking a fraction of something else and calling it "complete" or "well balanced" lol. Only thing I give the gracies credit for is popularizing Newaza
Humility ? 😂 He presents himself as the best fighter in the world, says that japanese jiu jitsu is nothing compared to brazilian one, lies about how the fight with Kimura actually happened. You call that humility ?
helio gracie invented leverage and the laws of nature himself, and he fought God to a draw to infinity, i know kuz Rorion told me once at jiujitsu camp.
You guys who disrespect and taunt the Gracie family are some ballsy mother fuckers. There are 42 people who clicked like on this comment who have testicles of iron on the internet but I would venture to say those balls shrink and shrivel if you were to be within 100 feet of anyone who feels differently.
Winning can make you a great person. It also can destroy a great person. Losing can also do the same. I'm listening to this Great Man, and I'm also listening to a man who hasn't come to grips with a loss. I do admit its a bitter pill to swallow. To say your style is so good the only way you'll lose is if you make a mistake is NUTS. Or better yet HORRIBLY ERROGANT..But I do understand its what you need to keep winning sometimes. Especially after such a tremendous loss.
The words from the founder of GRACIE JIUJITSU are taken to my heart. I will strive to achieve his approval through his children!.... I have achieved a Blue Belt under ROYLER GRACIE and Damn proud of it! .. The journey is for Life, I hope to earn my Black Belt someday, untill then, I am just a begginer,... hail HELIO GRACIE!.. Oss
A great man. Not afraid to do things his as he sees them to be true. As far as what he said about Rorion...Who knows. I say that at Helio's advanced age he doesn't seem to be senile. He seem to speak articulately and lucidly. Also once men of standing reach the sunset of their lives they become brutally honest because they have no reason to save prestige for the future. They feel they are reaching their day of reckoning and they want to go as honestly as possible.
He's a fighter...that's what it takes to call yourself the best....don't fool yourself with fake humbleness....in any pursuit whatever it is it takes massive ego to reach the top...Michael Jordan was famous for being an Ahole....every great athlete may act " nice in front of a camera...but it's just an act
Stop heilo was arrogant very but he had reason to be he !all the great fighters have to be lil to believe in them selfs and be lil crazy lil confident he was genius legend he was helio gracie os!!! grand master
+puckdrummer -- Exactly, it's Rorion and his son's that are doing the online training yet he uses him as the example of not going that. Strange. I wonder if he had his full faculties at that age and or, or he was really aware of what everyone in the family was actually doing in real life. Does anyone know when this was recorded?
+Stephen Moss -- Just to clarify my comment - Ryron and and Rener's online training is very useful but even they admit that it's better to complement it with real training in an academy when possible. Also - to get real belts they need to test with him in person. The belts people get via online only training are like placeholder belts.
+Stephen Moss I really doubt he was aware about every single detail on what everyone was doing. I mean, he was on his 90s, probably the elder guys like rickson, rorion or royce would respect him fully and ''let him know about anything'' because they grew up with him when he was still strong but the younger ones... yeah, the respect and that's it. That kinda slips from a generation to another one.
Interesting to hear his perspective on BJJ. He calls out every other BJJ school as not BJJ except for the Gracie Academy. He would know since BJJ is his twist on grappling.
Great interview though, you can just imagine his son's and family heading for cover when he blows his top, I liked the way he was so honest about things he really did not GAF who he offended and the thing is you just know he would say exactly the same to that person's face.
Lmao Helio says they threw in the towel but that he was fine and they shouldn't have??? In reality, his shoulder was broken in two places (even Rener Gracie admits this).
Your statement shows your lack of knowledge of Martial Art's.. You would be offering your rear end up for grabs as soon as you were threatened LOL,.. GM HELIO GRACIE understood the concept of ( Indomidle Spirit ).. Silly F-G go back to watching to idle justin bieber vidios!.. LOL
Caralho resulta que o grande mestre de bjj nem treinou só viu treinar e foi logo professor kkkkkk e o carlos com 3 anos era faixa preta hoje estaõ 10 no minimo para chegar a faixa preta kkkkk
Man this guy is so arrogant lol. Kimura broke this guys shoulder, TWICE back to back. He says that he wishes they didn't throw in the towel... if they didn't, he would have died back then in the 1950s
lies and lies.. luta livre was the most successful in vale tudo, george gracie was the best fighter in gracie familly, today jj has involved far futher than helio things by brazilians Japanese americans. You need technic, condition and strenght one is not enough. kimura choke you out break your hand and was smaller and shoeter but gracie won again. Also helio had the chance for rematch
Jui jitsu is Japanese. There’s not one thing Brazilian does that’s different from the Japanese version. Calling it Brazilian doesn’t make it Brazilian. And he created nothing
Actually it’s Chinese. It was developed from earlier Chinese arts. Which in turn was developed from Indian martial arts. Which was influenced by Greek Pankration. And on and on and on.
Lies lies telling lies after your brother died you can read all about it in Brazilian magazine books etc Robert Drysdale had a book about it helio is a big inspiration for me I have a picture in our mat room at home and a strong proud lineage and big reason jiu jitsu is what it is today but the lying is nutty lol
