www.vicbutera.com/ Ricky Gervais shows a music video from his 1980's pop band called "Seona Dancing" and talks about going from skinny to fat to medium.
Seona Dancing is very popular in the 80s in the philippines. Up until now when people who are into new wave music in the philippines heard "more to lose" they still dance to the music
It would have been interesting to think what would have happened had Gervais really made it big as a pop star. The Office might never have happened. Funny how things work out.
Funny. Parks and Rec would have never happened, the American Office would have never happened, Stephen Merchant and Karl Pilkington would just be regular guys, and of course Ricky would have never been a comedian and made and starred in all of those movies and TV shows. Crazy...
And if Parks & Rec never happened, Chris Pratt would've never starred in Guardians of the Galaxy, Star-Lord would have never punched Thanos on Titan and The Avengers wouldn't have lost. So thanks a lot Ricky Gervais. You killed half the planet with that stunt. >:/
The whole "synth duo" thing became saturated after OMD started having hits. Seona Dancing didn't really stand a chance when people like OMD, Tears for Fears and Eurythmics were doing it far better. That said, Seona's tunes were decent.
I'm glad somebody agrees with me. Before I saw him in Seona Dancing I imagined he was good looking in his younger days; he's still got it now and you can just tell. He was a perfect 10 back then with that body😘
The host was insufferable. Ricky on the other hand is a master at not letting any Jabs get at him. Ricky, you're brilliant and when I discovered your musical past, it only further cements that notion. I absolutely LOVE what I've been able to hear of Seona Dancing. I wouldn't even care if there was a connection between your two eras. Both are genuinely brilliant demonstrations of talent.
Eh, who cares, she's an unrecognisable uninteresting name, while ricky Gervais is a house hold name with a lot of depth. I've known about him for years and only found out about seona dancing a few months ago and have had have bitter heart stuck in my head since
It is such a bizarre he didn't make it with that career, he got the looks and the song is fine, why it didn't become a hit? I bet if young Ricky came to current generation, girls will forget about bieber and 1D and start fangirling over Ricky.
ugoagogo live It is perfect for the 80's, but I'm thinking the reason why it didn't become a hit is because all the big names and music legends were on top of their game in the 80's so there was no room for new faces like Seona Dancing. I think if the band came later in mid 90's they would've had a better chance to be successful. With Ricky's talent and the looks he had, there's no way he'd fail in the 90's!
Ricky has done several interviews in the past about Bowie being his idol. I recall a video I watched where he actually met him back in the day and they became good friends.
The lady clearly is confined to her own world. Looks old but has no idea about new wave and that other parts of the world exists. Seona Dancing's More to Loose is the only Anthem starter for every new wave dance line up.
I was a teen in the 80's and loved the whole New Wave music that was around at that era. I was a big fan of bands like The Cure, Simple Minds, Bauhaus and the sorts. But I don't think I ever heard anything by Seona Dancing. Which is quite odd, as it's absolutely something I would have loved back then (and still love now). And Ricky looked amazing! A bit of a crossover between David Bowie and Peter Murphy (from Bauhaus).
Damn it, why wouldn't she just admit that Ricky Gervais is totally sexy? I prefer today Ricky Gervais to David Bowie Ricky Gervais, even though he was cute.
1984?... around that time the industry was completely saturated with 'Duran Duran/Bowie/A-ha' etc genre, Seona Dancing were so mainstream but maybe the commercial music market of the time already had its big names...not much has changed with mainstream these days in terms of copy cat artists, musicians etc, just the way it works..still I think they were good at it, sounded and looked very in tune with the 80's pop scene and great seeing Gervais in another life, apparently he had managed the brit pop band 'Suede' for a time, he eventually poked fun at himself in 'The Office' with David Brent performing and releasing cheesy pop music, good fun. LIKE IT MAN!
I don't find Seona Dancing to be funny at all. I find it heartbreaking that they didn't get more popular cause I'd kill for at least a full album from them. Soooo freakin good! Sure, he's hilarious and pudgy now, but I might just trade it for a skinny synth pop version. Damn the pizzas!
I saw him in Muppets Most wanted being bullied by the copy of Kermit. And he happened to be one of my New Wave music heroes back in the 80's. I didn't see that coming. At least with David Bowie, we saw him metamorphosed into what he is today.
+farley fuentebella I thought to myself "New Wave heroes"? And then I realized... oh, yes. The Philippines. I wonder if he ever acknowledges his brief stardom there. I get the feeling if he went there he'd get into serious trouble. Blasphemy and mocking those in power like royalty is a big part of his comedy.
British sarcasm absolutley flies over the head of Americans. I had to be "overly" sarcastic (to the point we in Britain would consider condescending) in order to be "subtle". If I was genuinley subtle, people would take what I was saying at face value. A lot has changed since though - but calling someone a "daft sod" or "fucking idiot" is still off limits for some reason 🤔
Weird how I’m the only one who doesn’t hate Joy here cuz I think Ricky is like the perfect guest because he doesn’t seem to take anything personally. I think he makes hosts look good tho.
The thing is it’s not a bad song, it’s just not a great song. It needed a killer hook to lift it to the next level and make it a hit. Close, but no cigar
Oh My Fricking Gawd. Does that woman have ANY tact whatsoever!? I know she's American, and "bold", but FFS, pull your head in and get some fricking manners.
Ha ha! My ambition in life was to be a new romantic pop star and a comedian and he did both. Let's face it only a comedian would wear those clothes! Hats off!
David Bowie actually referenced all of these "new wave" bands who were copying him in the song Teenage Wildlife.... least to say, he wasn't very happy about them new wave boys :)
why is everyone hating on host? it's funny! if that was ricky roasting the shit out of comedian who once was a pop singer - everyone would die laughing here.
Hey Ricky Gervais, what do you think so funny with that video?? You're supposed to be the one showing the world that you have the talent as a musician but what you're doing is the opposite. Why don't you try to perform here in the Philippines, we want to see you on stage not as a comedian but as a music artist and we hope that this will wake you up..
Her and her audience were terrible lol, on a completely different page than Ricky and she wouldn’t stop interrupting him. They missed some good bits and didn’t appreciate his humor 🤦🏻♀️
