Well since he in no way claimed ownership of the notion, in terms of it being his own original insight, there's nothing at all wrong with the declaration in my humble opinion.
katie murphy Nope. The great Mark Twain is the original one. “I do not fear death. I had been dead for billions and billions of years before I was born, and had not suffered the slightest inconvenience from it.” - Mark Twain
katie murphy I think that a great many people (myself included) came to this understanding independently. If you spend a little time thinking about not being conscious, not existing etc., you inevitably end up considering the fact that you didn't exist before you were born. It's a simple logical narrative
What's hell full of? The Shroud proves Jesus is God. I met God in 2003. Shroud of Turin: Absolute proof the man in the Shroud is Jesus Christ = (Catholic Jesus)ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-IUFehRFeAMk.html
I questioned a Muslim on this problem. It seems Christianity and Islam share the belief that as long as you repent for your sins it's enough to go to paradise... Not just not-commiting murder in the first place 🤔 I think someone might've been making up the rules as they went along 😂
Heaven, Hell. Who cares? Child abusers, murderers, rapists, human traffickers get to Heaven all because they say “sorry” at the end of their lives. Bunch of bullshit.
"There are twelve year old kids who are told that if they don't believe in god, they'll go to hell." 01:12 This spoke to me so much. As a child my parents thought I was getting close to the point of exploring masturbation. They gave me a religious leaflet explaining how masturbation was wrong and you shouldn't do it. I was so naive, I thought that if you masturbated you liked men. This same religion had already informed me from a younger age that homosexuality was sin. For a while I had a child sized breakdown thinking that I was gay and abandoned by my God and soon my family. It wasn't until my atheist sister came home and found me crying that it was all explained to me. I was informed what masturbation actually meant, that I was not gay and that God was a theory, not fact. She stuck her neck on the line, as it caused a massive argument between her and my parents. She had made me question my faith, but my parents had failed in their duty of education. Funnily enough, neither of my parents are religious in the slightest now. *Religion should never be taught to children as fact.*
+Christian Koncz She really is. Always been there for me and is just the best mum to her kids. Her son had to go to a Catholic school because it was the only one in the area. They sent him home with holy water to bless the house and told him she was a sinner. A school teaching kids disregard toward their parents... He goes to a different school now to say the least.
Sam Bayliss Shocking. I'm guessing you are from the US. This sort of thing would be unthinkable in Europe, maybe with the exception of very rural parts of Southern and Eastern Europe. Transylvania, Sicily, that sort of thing.
+Christian Koncz I know how it sounds, but rural England actually. Hence the shock the school did that. It's the kind of thing you'd expect of America though, with all the batshit things you hear about the bible belt.
Sam Bayliss that surprises me. I guess Hungary is a particularly Atheistic country, but I can certainly imagine something like that happening in Ireland and Poland. But England always struck me as a rather secular country.
I sincerely feel that comedians are some of the wisest people on the planet. Not solely because of their ideas, either. I mean I've had the same thoughts as Ricky for the vast majority of my life. But it's also because of how they manifest these ideas in the form of verbal/written communication. It takes a genius to take shit so incredibly sacred to so many people and have them laugh at it. I hope Ricky keeps doing what he's doing. He's a good man and a funny man.
"Religious apologists complain bitterly that atheists and secularists are aggressive and hostile in their criticism of them. I always say: look, when you guys were in charge, you didn't argue with us, you just burnt us at the stake. Now what we're doing is, we're presenting you with some arguments and some challenging questions, and you complain." -A.C. Grayling
Popo Sandybanks Well, obviously the religious should expect the criticism to be aggressive and hostile. "Extraordinary claims demand extraordinary evidence." -, Hitch
i watched an interview where Gervais said he wasnt agnostic and that he thought agnostics were weirdos who couldnt make their mind up. Glad to see here he had actually learnt the definition of an agnostic atheist xD
Edward Kenway But Agnosticism is not about whether you know if you believe in god or not. It's the belief/view that nothing is known or can be known of the existence or nature of (a possible) god. If one were to approach the question of whether a god exists using the scientific method in an intellectually honest way, they would be forced to come to the position of an Agnostic Atheist. Why? Firstly because you cannot form a scientific hypothesis surrounding the existence of god as it would be untestable because it would be unfalsifiable and secondly, because you cannot test it you have no good evidence upon which to form a belief in the existence of god. Ergo, a scientists intellectually honest position should be by default that of an Agnostic Atheist.
It astounds me when religious people say atheists are trying to force their opinion on others. I ask them this.... When was the last time an atheist knocked on your door and asked you if you have read any other books?... A Jehovah's Missedit maybe.
Laren, do you actually form these thoughts in your head before you type them, or have you a computer infinite monkey program churning them out? I'm atheist. I'm not earning money to say that. I'm not a fascist communist. I'm not looking for another religion. There are quite enough for me to see as ridiculous. Oh and before you see the fact that I find your choice of religion as ridiculous, look at how you see other religions. A blue multi-trunked elephant god? Thor? Zeus? Mars? Aphrodite? Cat gods? How do you see those gods?
Same thing happened to me. Was about 10 years old, went over to my friends house and asked him if god knew I was trying to believe in him, and he just looked at me with this puzzled look and said "you believe in god?". Then I realized the only reason I was trying to was fear of going to hell. It was like having a weight lifted off my shoulders, I was always so scared I would go to hell because I couldn't make myself believe, awful that millions of kids probably feel this way right now.
Ricky telling the story about his brother reminds me of how I first started questioning religion. My grandpa was an old grumpy man. I was about 8-9 years old and there was a Christian out of curriculum class I was attending at school. We had to paste paper icons of various saints (I was Christian Orthodox) in a notebook and I don't remember why but I was showing it to my grandpa. He wasn't very impressed by it. I asked him if he believes in God. His answer was: "I don't believe in nonsense." And from this moment since I've started questioning everything. It's fun, because my mom is kind of a spiritual type of person, so she's not only into religion in particular but superstitions, astrology, fate and so on. We have good times.
I think atheists have to be the most humanist people. Why? This world is the most they can get so they really want to make it a better place. They have everything to live for. So please do more so that this world can resemble more and more paradise.
Unlike the US, the UK is officially a Christian country. I'm about the same age as Ricky - and British - and remember singing hymns every morning in school assembly. I know The Lord's Prayer off by heart. But I became an atheist.
Me too. I enjoyed all the stories from the bible that the minister told us at assembly. I enjoyed singing the songs and listening to the teacher playing the piano. I grew up though, a good man, I hope, and cannot for the life of me understand how people can believe in God and religion.
The only thing that Mr. Gervais is mistaken about in this clip is that the Sun Kil Moon lyric he quotes ("You wasted life, why wouldn't you waste death?") is not an original composition by that band, but is actually a lyric written by Modest Mouse for their song "Ocean Breathes Salty", which Sun Kil then later covered. Other than that, Ricky is dead-on accurate in his views. We only have a finite amount of time here on this planet, in this one life, and then we are gone forever. So soak it up as much as you can, because someday the ride *will* stop.
Mike Tank the only thing I disagree with him on about this is when he says none of us know so we're all agnostic. It's a common misconception that agnosticism has to do with knowledge. It actually has to do with perceived knowledge: A Gnostic atheist lacks the belief in god(s) and claims to know that there is no god. An agnostic atheist lacks belief in god(s), but makes no claim of knowledge that there is a god or gods. Most atheists fall under this definition. A "true" agnostic believes the likeliness of god existing and not existing are equal. An agnostic theist believes that god(s) exist but don't claim to know for sure. A gnostic theist believes to know for sure that a god or gods exist. It's not whether somebody HAS knowledge, but rather that a person CLAIMS to have knowledge, that gnosticism regards. Other than that, and that the awesome Modest Mouse originally made that song, Gervais is absolutely correct in everything else he says.
Ricky quoted a band, "You wasted life, why wouldn't you waste death" . This is a great song and lyrics, sung by Modest Mouse, not Sun Kill Moon, both great bands, he got that wrong. Ricky is always right on point when discussing religion, and I love his work !
What happens to you after death, is actually quite amazing and comforting, if you think about it. Your energy and material returns back to earth (gravity keeps us here) which you came from and you will play a part in creating new and supporting current life. So you don't need to think you will be transferred to somewhere else "heaven/hell/where ever", but you will stay here. So all our loved ones stay with us forever, they are not transferred anywhere. That includes your dog too ;). All life ever existed is still here in other form.
I remember like it was yesterday (I'm 37 yrs old), and I was 4 years old when I realized my life would eventually end. Took me 2 hours to get over my "close-to-panic-attack" state.
I remember the feeling of liberation you get when you work out that none of it's real. I'm pretty sure I was the same sort of age as Ricky was when I worked it out.
I've been having many discussions where I've asked why "agnostics" call themselves that, instead of atheists. Or at least call themselves agnostic atheists. And here he comes along using those two words together. I almost cried. I thought I was the only one. :P (Yes, probably ignorant of me. I bet there are others as well.) But it's very typical of especially famous people, to use agnostic instead of atheist, when they're clearly atheists. Just cause it's somehow more acceptable in some areas still. However, the definition the majority of people who call themselves agnostics use is "I don't believe in a god, but I don't know if one exists or not.". That makes you an atheist, deal with it. "Lack of belief in a deity.". Not using it only empowers the negativity that still lingers from our past. Also, if you feel like this; "I don't know if a god exist or not, and I'm not choosing a side." or something similar to that, then you're still an atheist. To believe, you have to actively do just that, believe. If you don't, you're an atheist.
Nostalgia Guy You do know if you believe or not. To believe is an action. If you don't do that action, you do not believe. (At the moment, if that's the case.). So, until you do, you're an agnostic atheist.
I don't believe in an afterlife, and the nice about it for me is that i don't ever think about it. It doesn't distract me or my thoughts, it doesn't take up my time, and i don't feel guilty about anything that i do in the mean time that i don't morally find negative.
+11 11 (G-Man112) What an ugly, hypocritical thing to say. People like you make me glad I'm an atheist with real morals. I try to be good to other people not because I'm afraid of being punished by my imaginary friend or I expect to be rewarded for it in the future, but because it is the right thing to do. Those (unlike yours) are real morals.
The ability to think, evaluate and rationalise for oneself is not innate in humans. Especially in light of overwhelming religious dogma and subversion from a young impressionable age. Respect.
To those afraid of dying: I ran a large spiritual care department at a Hospice providing support for finding hope, purpose, and meaning at the last stages of life. I was 35 when I started. Being around the dying normalizes the experience and those moments had some beauty. Additionally, as we age, others of our tribe die. (Nothing happens as we grow younger! :) As or peers die, we get more used to the idea and guys know.."If that bloke can do it, I can do it better!
That lyrics is from The Ocean Breathes Salty written by Isaac Brock of Modest Mouse. But Sun Kil Moon did cover that track for their Tribute Album, Tiny Cities.
The song 'Ocean Breathes Salty' from which stems the lyrics, "You wasted life, why wouldn't you waste death?" is by Modest Mouse and was only covered by Sun Kil Moon.
great quote "We are all Agnostic because we have no *proof* of Gods existence - but some of us choose to disbelieve (Atheists) and others choose to believe (Theists)"
Listened to this earlier...fucking awesome. Gervais makes a hell of a lot of sense. Can't have faith...in anything...until you completely lose it. Though you don't have to necessarily belong to a side or a team. A lot will argue "You're either an atheist or you're a crazy, bible-thumping zealot! A creationist or an evolutionist! You're either with us or against us!" Not the case. A person can believe in science and still stare in "awe" at a mountain or a flower. The two aren't mutually exclusive. You don't have to pick a "team". This life is a wild ride. Enjoy all aspects of it...known and unknown.
Fun fact, the song he was referring to by Sun Kil Moon is actually from the album he did where he covered modest mouse songs of which the original lyric "You've wasted life why wouldn't you waste death was written by Isaac Brock.
maybe, but also maybe an itchy nose, or slightly sensitive allergies... you'd prolly think my sister has a massive coke addiction if you saw her walk anywhere in spring.
"You wasted life, why wouldn't you waste the afterlife?" Modest Mouse (Ocean Breathes Salty). I think Sun Kil Moon did a cover of it. "If god takes life, he's an indian giver" Modest Mouse (Bukowski) Just another great lyric I thought I'd add.
6 years later she still listened to him telling the exact same stories 😂. Love Ricky but same stories for a decade Jane has been listening to him for over 30 years
I remember like it was yesterday (I'm 37 yrs old), and I was 4 years old when I realized my life would eventually end. Took me 2 hours to get over my "close-to-panic-attack" state.
Secularist FreeThought Perhaps it's because you weren't offering a logical argument and were pointing out only the weak examples that help your case. I've seen crazy religious people, sure, but I've seen more than enough who never bother people about religion that I don't associate the group with "danger and madness." If anything, a much larger portion of atheists are quite vocal about how intelligent they are for seeing through the sham. Just like with modern feminism, actively seeking persecution will ensure you find examples of it while ignoring the vast majority who don't give a shit.
Link this O&A clip to 7.2 billion people. The result is world peace. Gervais on the O&A show was the best thing to happen to the 21st century, the death of religion.
Clevan Campbell It's not a question of judgement. This is the question in question: "Did you even listen to what he said?". I responded to your answer, because you responded "Yes" which belies the reason for asking the question in the first place. There follows a follow up question: "Did you even read what I wrote?". Perhaps a better answer to your initial question would have been: "No".
The "sun kil moon" lyric gervais is referring to is actually a song he (SKM) covered of modest Mouse called "ocean breaths salty" from good news for people who like bad news. It's actually an Issac Brock lyric. Credit. Due.
Nobody ever said they knew. Did you not even listen to what they had to say? Listen around 9:40, he addresses the fact that nobody knows, and that most people don't claim to know.
***** I'm an atheist but I understand people's need for god. Is just hard for some people to go trough this life without knowing that everything is gonna be all right in the end.. That's why I think god can be anything you want. If I belive a certain pair of socks give me more luck when I play sport arent' they my god in that moment then ? Anything can be your god. You can pray to the peal of a banana if you make yourself think that it really helps you. That's what they probably mean when they say god is all around you.
armin38822 No one need to belive in god. They might strugle to find something usefull to fill the void and then religion swoops in with those fucked up caveman books filled with all kind of terrible shit.
ensteffo Is not all bad. I can see how church gives my small city a sense of community. Is something that brings them together. We as non belivers can't just shit on them. That's not cool...
Opie & Anthony are the only hosts that don't come across as fake or putting on a show, they seem genuinely interested in what guests have to say without an agenda
The version of evolution I learned in school was confusing because it was voiced backwards. A new food source becomes available to a species and those in the population who can utilize it have an advantage which eventually effects the population. They always said, 'we evolved' when 'we adapted or died'. Human evolution may even have slowed since we took control of the environment.
I think our next Noch with evolving will be when all religions and religious beliefs are absolutely abolished we will change for the better and advance at a much faster rate
Ignorant and to a certain extent it keeps human nature in line. The human complex needs a superordinate system otherwise chaos ensues which is what we’ve been seeing slowly happening. Atheism serves no purpose apart from the very few willing to go through the tedious and painful path to “enlightenment” which is nothing special tbh but then again it is. Everything has pros and cons
a pedantic correction: the Sun Kil Moon song Ricky references is "Ocean Breathes Salty," and is a cover of the song originally by Modest Mouse. and that line is fucking brilliant
"You wasted life. Why wouldn't you waste death?" is a Modest Mouse lyric from the song Ocean Breathes Salty. Sun Kil Moon covered it. Just thought I'd throw that out there.
