In all my years in Washington and Oregon I have always found the coast to be cool and windy. Sort of makes you want to fly a kite, doesn't it? That's a fun thing to do at the beach.
This was my first year at the Lincoln City Kite Festival. I liked it and I'd probably go back again. It's a chill thing to do. They bring in professional kite flyers to do shows and tricks. It's fun. The big kites are awesome, and the little kites are acrobatic. Take your pick -- it's all good.
One piece of tourist advice -- buy a nice kite and it will be there for you to play with for years. Sure, you can make kite flying complicated and competitive and bigger and more better, but some of us just want to go someplace relatively empty and have a mellow little kite flying session.
It's like fishing or watching golf or baseball on the television -- it's sort of a good excuse to chill and enjoy your surroundings. With kite flying at Lincoln Beach, the surroundings are beautiful, the wind is strong and it's not hard to find a stretch of beach that is barely occupied. Pack a snack and a bottle of water and make an afternoon or day of it.
