Malinois are some of the sweetest dogs on the planet, but they definitely need a lot of care and attention. Trained quite a few of them including one super sweet boy that's a championship winning show dog. Currently have one that was picked up off the side of a road in Houston and transported to us in Florida after some surgery for abuse wounds and training. She wanted to eat my head off at first, but now she is the sweetest little thing on the planet. They are definitely a one person/family dog and need as much socialization with people as possible.

Dude all dogs are sweet, it's not a malinois thing. All dogs are generally sweet in personality and very sensitive to our moods and actions. Quit breed stamping.

Seeing this and commenting a bit late. I was a volunteer at a dog shelter and certainly agree with this. I have watched the videos on Malinois and yes, have come across a couple at the shelter who were very driven and energetic. (One kept ending up at the shelter because he would get bored, escape from his house and, luckily, then be handed in to the shelter who would ring his owner.) However, I also came across a Malinois and a Dutch Shepherd in the past year who were both very calm and centred, and I would have adopted either of them in a heartbeat if I had been in a position to do so. Both of these dogs were a pleasure to walk and spend time with. (I walked the shelter dogs for an hour separately and so got to know them well.) They were great with other dogs as well. You mentioned pitbulls. I am from the UK where they are a banned breed and have a bad reputation, but I was a volunteer in Spain where they are allowed (with a licence and wearing a muzzle). A lot end up in shelters there which is a pity. I thought that they are great dogs. All dogs need the right owner - someone who understands the breed and is a responsible person.

Just came across this. Really appreciate it. I'm potentially adopting a Mal puppy from a rescue this week. I've been watching videos on the breed all weekend and getting nervous about it. This really helped. Really looking forward to owning one of these beautiful dogs. (Or it owning me!)

How did it turn out a year later?
@STMVO
@STMVO 2 года назад
@@dontbeadrone Sorry I’m so late to respond to this. Just noticed it recently! So I adopted the Mal puppy. I named him Odin. (We have two brother cats named Thor and Loki!) To answer your question, it’s been great! I didn’t mention it, but this is my first dog. My goal from the start was to have a well behaved dog. I’m not trying to do anything fancy with him. I just want a good dog that I can do life with. So I worked with a trainer in my area that has experience training all types of dogs. I did his “Puppy Basics” class. It consisted of more training for me than the dog. Worked on Place, Down, Stay, Come commands and stuff like that. Also routines and consistent corrections when needed. No treat training. (Though I do some treat based training here and there these days.)Odin has been an absolute dream. He’s my best bud and he goes pretty much everywhere with me. Not to say we haven’t had some snags here and there. I have to remember that he changes and goes through phases just like we do. So when I start seeing a behavior that I don’t like, I’m very aware of it and I take steps to correct the issue. But for the most part, he’s just a damn good dog. I wouldn’t recommend the breed to everyone, because now that I’m in the “dog world” there are a lot of really shitty people out there that shouldn’t own dogs period. It’s not the dog’s fault. But if you’re willing to put in a little work, research, and some consistency, it’s worth it. From my perspective, they’re not much different than any other herding type dog. (My mom has an Australian Cattle Dog that’s a nut job. Moreso than my dog!) Anyway, hope this is helpful! I’m actually hoping to rescue another Mal puppy here fairly soon. I’m absolutely in love with the breed. They’re awesome!

Check in with the 341st Training Unit at Lackland AFB. They have lots of Maligators and some GSD’s who are 8+ years old and were retired from active duty. Yes they almost all have physical issues like high blood pressure or a hip that was replaced or something like that. They kept them stimulated by using them as training aids for new handlers. Basically these older dogs just want to chill in the AC (they don’t get that luxury in the kennels) and play some fetch and swim and walk and interact with your other dog and/or cat. They are in their sunset years.... you know how that goes. Obedience training is spot on for these dogs... they will make you look like a dog training star. Any prescriptions they need are covered by an organization.... you won’t pay for anything besides their food and all the treats you should be getting them to love them up. And yes for those retirees or full time trainers the 341st has some complete nutball Maligators too that will occupy a lot of your day. These dogs earned the luxury of spending their sunset years out of the base kennels and on a big dog bed in your house. Check in with the MWD adoption folks at the 341st for more info.

We rescued a 4 year old Belgian Malinois mix. She's super calm (she'd rather sleep than do anything). She's a fantastic dog. She IS extremely protective of me (I'm her person). I think that she may have been trained as a sniffer dog (she will sniff cars on the side of the street), but she's not super driven. She did have some quirks (as I call them) that we weren't told about. She was terrified of both cars and people. It's taken 7 months of constant work to get her to where she no longer cowers in fear every time a car passes or I stop and talk to someone (she'll actually go up to people now as long as they allow her to make the first move). We do have a problem of isolation anxiety, which started about 4 months after we rescued her. She is fine alone for an hour, and then she starts panicking and getting destructive. Is this a forever thing or will she get better (she turns 5 in July).

Good video. I also want to add, it can take up to a year after you've adopted a dog for them to really get settled into their skin, for the both of you to learn and grow together and it also depends on the age of your dog. Sometimes after you adopt a dog depending on their age, they might go through a second puppyhood. Always have patience and give things time and seek out the right professionals before giving up on your new best friend. Most dogs just want you with them 24/7 and with plenty of excercise/activities and they're happy & content.

Another brilliant video on this ever-popular topic! Fully agree, but this information (that super-pet quality working GSDs, Malis and Dutchies are out there!) is not widely-known. I have one myself: Working line German Shepherd female, 7 years old now, her mother was highly human-aggressive ("reactive" is too mild a word; she was out to bite people, according to the owners and the local trainer). Her father was an extremely confident dog, boisterous and overbearing. According to the local trainer, all puppies from that litter grew up to be quite aggressive guard dogs. Not mine, though: The trainer had pointed me towards that one puppy from the litter that he was sure would make an amazing apartment pet for me. And boy, was he right: My girl never destroyed anything, almost never barked, never challenged our small senior female dog, and dropped into a "down" even if a cat sprang up right before her when she was off leash. No e-collar- or long line training needed. Picture perfect pet, and "nanny dog" to the Estrela puppy I bought later when we moved into the countryside, and I actually needed a guard dog. I wish there was an app available for people to point out such "pet-grade gems" :-) But as it is, one has to rely on the recommendation of experienced trainers and breeders.

Thank you for the useful information. Just adopted a 3 year old female mal, shes been with me for 3 days and already does this. She puts her hand on my arm, leg, shoulder if I'm laying down. She looks at me like this as well. If I pet her and stop she'll nudge my hand with her head or lick me until I pet her again, lays next to me or vice versa and isn't bothered by it at all. In fact she wants to sleep next to me but I gotta teach her to not jump on the bed but it's hard to say no to those eyes so I'll allow it sometimes for the time being and lastly she follows me every step of the way. She does however have a high drive, she's been attacked before and is therefore very afraid of other dogs and that's why when she sees them she goes into attack mode big or small, pretty sure they trained her before I had her too because she does listen pretty well to commands overall but is very protective/on guard at home, the slightest sounds and she'll bark. I will be doing my best to let her feel safe again and to train and love her with all my heart, already lots of work but it's so worth it and fulfilling. So all in all I think she might be halfway in-between a working line and house pet, leaning more towards working, I'll find out soon if I'm correct in this, will definitely find a pro to train her with me too.

This video need to be bumped up. I recently adopted a 7 year old Malinois that was brought to the shelter for humane euthanasia. She is a low drive Mal that has no health problems and no one would adopt her. She had been at the shelter over a year but she is the best house dog and even puts up with my Min Pin who thinks he's in charge. I would never adopt a Mal puppy but she is wonderful.

I have a knpv Dutch shepherd that comes from hard line's. However he's figured out that he doesn't have to be a monster. He's a very protective dog but he knows how to turn it off when he's home and around non threatening people. His best friend is a five pound morkie. I think a lot of a dog's temperament comes from the owner. If I want him to be a love bug then he will, if I want him to be a man stopper he will . Most people just can't handle hyper dogs. They get them as a status symbol. And usually have no idea on how to train or raise one. My dog is a ranch dog. He loves to go to work everyday. He's a easy keeper because he runs most of his energy off at work and then is a really chill dog at home.

A well-trained pet quality Malinois is a deterrent by virtue of its breed. To everyone considering a shelter Malinois, please do your homework and ask questions about your intended dog, the hard questions regarding its history, drive and why it was surrendered. Being adopted then returned it hard on any dog, especially a Malinois. I have wanted a Malinois for almost 30 years. Although I have working/sporting line dog experience, it was still hard to adopt a Malinois. I had to prove I knew what the breed entailed and my training experience before I could even meet Maxi. Remember it takes 3 days of feeling overwhelmed and nervous, 3 weeks of settling in and 3 months of building trust and bonding with you, the dog you see in the shelter will not be the dog you see once this 3/3/3 period is over. Three weeks ago, I adopted a 14 m/o female (with baggage, adopted twice, returned twice for a three-bite history (fear biting) and a dog fight from an improper introduction to the resident dog, all from handler stupidity) I will not fail this dog. She loves to chill and snooze while I read, etc., but I've also never worked a dog so hard when training. If she has the necessary drive and she's showing signs, we're going to try for French Ring Brevet, as a blue dog (a blue dog is not papered or a non-approved breed.) My friends can no longer walk into my house unannounced; they've all been placed on formal notice. P.S. You can also say goodbye to using the bathroom by yourself🙄.

She looks very good and that dog will bite. May have start with burlap. Point being all Malinois are 'pet' quality. The problem is the handler with zero experience. Half afraid of the dog. On my third Mal now, Mondio Ring sire Ring champ, after the first years of lack of impulse control, and a ton of easy tolerance, excellent house dog. Act EXACTLY like your girl. Same with past boys, both Schutzhund but stopped at first step. Same as your girl after a couple years, heads on shoulder while reclining. Not like a retriever, the take off after three or four minutes of head massage while licking like they do. Very thought of one of these in the pound nauseates. On the OTHER hand, we've taken only pups. I have worked for years placing police dogs in departments then training police handlers, but never thought about your pet point, they all look and acted just like your girl. :) Experience it THE KEY. This will love nip, nip when hurt, jump like little impulsive wild things, hump your leg when babies, so on, I always gently shoo them off. No corrections except for the first leg lift inside the house; and that is only one mild slap then verbal afterwards. Thx for your video. :)

I think the problem is that many people get the wrong dog for their lifestyle. For instance, Malinois are not lap dogs willing to sit and watch TV all day. They require a good amount of daily exercise and attention. If they don't get it, they become frustrated. Some people get these dogs when what they should have got is a Lhasa Apso.

I feel like alot of it is how you train and bond with them, they play with each other and all that but once we make them jump on the couch they know its relax time and they always have to be by our sides at all times, so someone that works all the time probably isn't for them they need a yard to run free and a freedom to an extent. We got littermates which we heard was a bad idea especially with Mali's but they are great and best friends with each other and us!

And your the pack leader. This gives them purpose and validation. I miss my naps and cuddles with my Mally's. Perhaps it's time for another.

Do malinois still have any herding instinct or has that been bred out of them? I'm thinking of trying out a mal and have it either work in tandem with my heelers or to protect the livestock from predators

Hard to say with 100% accuracy, but with my experiences so far, they still have herding instinct.

Over the years I have had dobermans, am-staffs etc. All rescues who lived a happy healthy life. I'm 75 & have 12 y/o Doxie rescue. Son gave me 2 pups 14 most ago..Malinois boy & girl. They are smart, funny, sweet, alert, protective & my friends & protectors naturally. They learned basic 1 word & hand signal commands early. Very smart. They know they are part of a pack. I live in isolated desert on 10 acres. I have large area fenced where they can play & be safe from predators. More importantly they are naturally protective of me. Always alert & vigilant. They hear, smell & see what I can't & their bark changes when a threat is oresent. They are loved pets/companions & on more than a few occasions they have thwarted advances by hum & animal predators. I'm hoping to add 2 more rescues to the pack soon.

Since nearly NO owner ever took 1 dog through basic training, just how will they ever recognize a suitable dog in a shelter ? Normal adopters will never recognize what dogs in shelters have in them. You are assuming too much... 'give them a chance' is nonsense because adopters do not do that... they don't even take a dog into basic training.

Yo I can not wait to get a Malinios. My sister will move out and take our boxer soon. At that time I will get a Malinios. I have been doing crazy amounts of research. I have taught my boxer things i never thought I could have. I can’t wait to try it with Malinios. I of course wanted to start training one as a puppy. But now I thinking maybe I can find a young one in a shelter. And maybe that is better for everyone.

This guy does not make any sense at all Malinois and Dutch Shepherd are working dogs they are bred for working purposes mostly for police work and personal protection your personal protection or police dog can double as your family pet but not only as a family pet once they get the right training these dogs are bred to have high drive not sit around on the couch all day with the family that does absolutely nothing. If you want a low Drive dog to sit around on the couch get a golden retriever

Clearly you are misinformed. Golden Retrievers are not low drive at all. They are hunting dogs, especially bred for retrieving ducks from the water when hunters shoot them out of the sky. They're also much less trainable than Belgian Malinois and less focused on their owners. They can be very stubborn when they want to be. They need lots of exercise and almost every one of them I've known is hyper. You clearly didn't watch his video or chose not to believe your own eyes as he showed you a Malinois that was not all over the place. You don't want people to judge you by your color, so don't judge a dog by its reputation. Breeders will tell you exactly what he said in the video. Not all Malinois are crazy over the top hyper even from the same lineage. They've bred enough dogs to know that their temperaments can vary widely among individuals from the same litter. They have certain instincts in common, but to varying degrees. I belong to lots of Malinois groups and these dogs can range from very calm to turbo charged. Each one has to be viewed as an individual. I've actually seen a few couch potatoes in this breed, and some that can turn their activity on and off when it's called for.

Yes but why the fuck are we making PET mals now?? Pet gsds weren't crazy enough. 100+ dog breeds mals aren't the only one that are nice house pets. Are you really going to recommend a working low drive dog over some beagle to a family? Really??? LUL.

Great video with great information! But you have to pleeeasse discourage people from getting them!!!!!! They are in an EXTREME amount of danger right now!!!!!!!! I would be seriously depressed if the Malinois got the German Shepherd’s curse. Please just consider my comment. The popularity of the breed went up 45 places after Max came out. That is alarming!!!!!!! It just makes me extremely upset. During that time frame many studies show that a sickening amount of Mals have lost their working ability, gained health issues, lost working body structure, and have a severely shorter lifespan! The only reason people want them is to have a super cool “military” dog. Those people are stupid and ridiculously selfish. Please don’t encourage them to get Malinois and raise the popularity of the breed even more!
