RIDGID OCTANE Impact Driver RIDGID's New 6-mode OCTANE Impact Driver delivers high torque of 2,400 in-lbs with 3,000 RPM and 3500 IPM. That combination makes this new OCTANE model the leader of the RIDGID 18-volt line. The OCTANE impact driver is rated at 200 ft-lbs more than the previous leader, the brushless Gen5X. With that said, to get this increased power, the RIDGID OCTANE line requires the use of an OCTANE battery. All RIDGID 18V batteries work on OCTANE models but reduce the performance slightly. So that makes us wonder what the rated power of the GEN5X would be with a RIDGID OCTANE battery?
Before we get to the testing, the new OCTANE model offers 6 modes. The first three are very similar to the GEN5X as they are just speed modes. Modes 4-6 are what differ and offer unique settings.
Mode 4 - Auto-stop This mode shuts the brushless motor down after it starts to impact so you don’t overtighten.
Mode 5 - Fastener assist - This mode works in forward and reverse and does different things. In forward it is a slow start that works into slow impact and then works to maximum impacting. When used to remove fasteners, it will turn on and off six times to hold the head in the bit and slowly work to more torque and speed allowing a successful removal.
Mode 6 - self-drilling - This mode starts fast and slows down to help you avoid shearing off fastener heads. This works best with shorter fasteners ad the impacting is fairly slow.
OCTANE vs GEN5X
When comparing the GEN5X impact wrench to the OCTANE models, we chose to use OCTANE 6.0 Ah batteries on each model. Obviously, the GEN5X was not rated with the battery and might benefit a little when using it. This test is to help anyone looking to upgrade decide if the upgrade is worth the money. We did the test with long lags to help show the difference in speed. Shorter fasteners were much harder to see the difference. That tells you how close they were. You can see in the video that the OCTANE model will beat the GEN5X, but not by a lot. With the OCTANEs larger size, we expected a bit more power. What we did not expect what the OCTANE to be hot at the end of the test. Our thermal imager shows an interesting picture that makes us wonder what the OCTANE model shares in common with the Milwaukee M18 Gen 3 Impact Driver! When it comes to cost, the Ridgid Gen5X retails at $119 and the RIDGID OCTANE Impact Driver retails at $129. As always, it is the user that will know best if the benefits of the 6 modes will help them.

Wow , this kinda reminds me of the Pontiac TransAm & the Pontiac Formula. If any one here is old enough to remember the early 70s up through 1979 or so you will know exactly what I am talking about. I wonder how much influence Home depot has over the side of TTI that makes cordless tools....I personally still think that the Milwaukee surge is a very hard hombre to beat.

The auto mode helps me out a ton personally. The specs are only slightly higher than the gen 5, but literally double that of gen 4. Your description has a typo though, it says its 200ft-lbs stronger than gen 5, but Im pretty sure you meant in-lbs not ft-lbs. The drills TOTAL power is 200ft-lbs (2400in-lbs).

Given Home Depot has a BOGO deal right now (5/2 or 5/6 2019- 8/5/19), the Octane tools are looking pretty attractive. Buy a kit with a Gen 5x Charger, 3Ah Octane battery, and 6Ah Octane battery for $180 and you get to pick a select Octane tool for free (the Octane Impact Driver is one of the options). Or you can get the same charger/Octane batteries with the Octane hammer drill and Octane impact driver for $380 and you get to pick two Octane tools for free. Definitely worth checking out! There are some issues with finding this deal online that may resolve themselves by May 6th (when some stores are waiting to roll the deal out), but many locations have the deals going on now if you go into the store. I'm not sure this is everything but the ad in my local Home Depot lists the free tool choices as (all Octane) 7 1/4" Circular Saw, 9Ah Battery, Impact Driver, Grinder, Reciprocating Saw, 1/2" Impact Wrench, JobMax Multi-tool, Jig Saw, and a two pack of (it looks like) 3Ah batteries.

Question- What/Why are they calling this 6 modes? I bought the Ridgid Octane Impact driver and it has 3 modes: 1. Auto Stop 2. Fastener Assist mode 3. Self drilling mode .... What are the other 3 modes and how do you engage them? I am literally about to take mine back to Home Depot b/c my Octane does not behave consistently. The Ridgid representative I spoke with on the phone seems to think its something wrong with the internal switch that engages the modes. As an example, I can set the impact driver on Self drilling mode (speed 3) and drive a screw into PVC decking board. Sometimes it drives beautifully .... screw spins fast, it catches the wood, impact kicks in and it drives it down beautifully. But I can do the same thing again (same screw, same material, same setting) and it may will drive the screw a quarter the way in and then it kicks in to a really slow impact and it winds up taking several seconds to drive the screw. On the Fastener assist mode, it spins the screw, then the slow impact kicks in and it never speeds up like the instruction book says its supposed to. My Octane impact drill has been a nightmare and I dont know wtf is going on with it. But back to my original question.... what are the other 3 modes besides the ones i listed? Is it counting reverse of each of those 3 modes as the 4,5, and 6th mode???
@WorkshopAddict
@WorkshopAddict 2 года назад
This is why I dislike computer modes and just use my trigger finger to make the work happen. The other 3 modes are low, medium and high speeds in the normal settings.
@morokeiboethia6749
@morokeiboethia6749 2 года назад
@@WorkshopAddict When you say "normal setting" do you mean there is another setting that you can put the imp driver on that isn't auto stop, fastener assist, or self drilling? If so, how do you engage that mode?

@morokeiboethia6749
@morokeiboethia6749 2 года назад
@@WorkshopAddict ya i know that. I was hoping there was another mode that wasnt any of those 3 modes. Autostop is designed for driving short self tapping sheet metal screws (like on roofing). Fastener assist is designed for removing/driving a screw without stripping it (but its not fast). Self drilling mode is supposed to be for driving decking screws (starts fast but slows down) but problem with mine is it drives the screw (3 inch) about 60% of the way then then the slow impact kicks in when theres no need for it to and it takes an extra 3-4 seconds to finish driving a simple 3" decking screw. I think my impact was defective b/c I would always set it on self drilling mode and sometimes it would behave like a normal impact and drive the screw while impacting at a fast rate and sometimes it would drive the screw and impact at a really slow rate. I always kept the speed on 3 and always kept the mode on self drilling mode. It made no logical sense and I never coulod figure out why it sometimes impact at a slow rate or fast rate. Majority of the time it impact was at a slow rate. Thats why it drove me crazy.

The truthful answer in my experience, there is no best brand. Buy the brand that has an authorized service center closest to your house. I own tools from Makita, Milwaukee, Dewalt, Hitachi, and all of them are fantastic, no brand is uniformly better than another, each one has individual tools that stick out as better. If you buy a tool froma brand that has a service center nearby, if any warranty issues come up, it'll be a speedy and convenient trip to get if fixed. Turned out the Dewalt service center in my city is a 10 minute walk from my house, in retrospect Dewalt would have been the best brand for me to invest in simply for that reason. Dewalt, Milwaukee, Makita, Hitachi, Hilti are the best brands, their tools are professional grade and hold great resale value if you ever sell them. Among those brands, buy the one that has their service center close to you.

From a foreigner, it's so annoying these torque ratings.. and even on US torque-wrenches, it varies, feet pounds and on others its inch pounds.. annoying and particularly when it doesn't have to be. USA are in fact on the metric scale and signed the agreement to base their values in metric scaling like the rest of the world- .but for some weird unmature-reason USA they then put a conversation factor on top of the metric scale.. reason? none other to feel special. Recall its USA and also one country in Africa that are doing this. But US manager for standards and scaling got a huge backbone and honest... "its idiotic. yeah, we know it, its so freaking stupid to put a conversation on top for no reason at all." ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-SmSJXC6_qQ8.html but whatever... onto a online conversation site and lplug in these values so you can put this inch-pound into perspective with other appliances, not least newton meters' as here in Europe. as always solid video Brian.+1 recal its Metabo here that also work with that pulse feature to take out stripped screws.. though I recall it was on a drill.
