Tour of the slums in Nassau Bahamas 2011
Ok ok, I've gotten a lot of flack about me calling this particular part of Bahamas the slums. Let me elaborate. When we arrived in Nassau, me and my group was recruited on a tour of Nassau righ in the docking area of our cruise. The tour guide was a local and referred to this area as the slums. I, in no way shape or form meant to offend anyone. I figured this is the name that everyone in Nassau referred to this particular area as. The tour took us through the lower ,middle, and upper classes of the city and was extremely informative of Bahamian culture and I consider it a privilege to have only spent 15$ for the 3 hour tour around this beautiful city. We saw various landmarks, was taken to a few local markets, and rode by the mayor's house and very interesting thus i put it under education. Again I did not mean to offend.

Every where in the world there are areas that's not pleasing to the eye but I can guarantee the inside of those homes are much better than think.Some of those people living better than you think dont always judge a book by it's cover

I am a Bahamain. And this was very upsetting to watch. Why would you come to a country....in this case island just to ride around the poor areas video taping people and their homes in disgust 😬 there are many beautiful parts of my island you could have toured but yet you choose this. That says alot about yr character. And fyi.....I have visited parts of America as well and yr states has it "slums". Difference is, even though we in the Bahamas do, in comparison to America, we are still a Paradise. Shame on you

this mess is very upsetting...not the so called poverty but the fact that their is a business that takes people for a ride in the "slums"...how dare you participate in the exploitation of the poor...I bet the person or people that does these so called tours do not give any money back to that community...you ride around and look at the people like they are circus animals...how freaking dare you...

Chai's Room .. I saw worse areas than this just going from the airport to Paradise Island. Trash was piled up on the side of their houses all the way to the roof. No recycling. Everyone in cars sitting in traffic jams, even though the Island is just a few miles wide. Stupid. The government there must be corrupted in some way to keep the local people in such a state. The cab driver said the goal for young people is to get off the island and live in the US.

Daisy Cocoa Well the cab driver was wrong. Most Bahamians I know love the Bahamas and don't plan on leaving unless it's for school. The U.S. has worse looking areas so the Bahamas isn't all that bad...

Believe it or not, I didn't view the tour as a circus. This is the reality, unlike these fancy postcards from the Bahamas making everything look So Glamorous with the beautiful Waters and the Beautiful Islands I am fortunate that I was able to experience the realities of what people are in the dark about contrary to what many may think even when I witnessed some of these individuals walking with jugs of water down the streets; I saw so much joy and the sense of not a bit of worry at all. what we considered as poverty other people see as peace. they do not have to deal with the struggles of these high mortgage payments High car notes and all the other stresses that comes along with the living of riches, so in actuality it just depends on how you view the situation.

I see many people craving for the fall of Bahamian paradise, they expect a hopeless slum with people living in abject poverty in the island, they couldn't find it and they will never find it in the Bahamas. I am using this platform to say thank you to the great and undying spirit of the Bahamian. Please be strong hold on and keep the paradise neat and livable for the glory of our ancestors and the unborn.

I can assure you that you were safe to walk back to your hotel from wherever this was in Nassau and you would have been perfectly safe- with the only interaction being the occasional person perhaps asking you for spare change - but more likely offering you assistance in getting back safely, perhaps for a tip.

Paul Lowe i agree cause when my wife & i went there on a cruise 5 years ago we rented a scooter & drove all over the slums, we were in these same streets in this video & more....we even spoke to locals at stop signs, laundromat, KFC,Nassau mall & many corner stores.. never had a problem....i got the sense that the hood in Nassau is just a world completely different than the slums here in the US.

Thanks for clearing up your reference to these parts being called "slums." Just another note for future reference, we don't have mayors. We have a Prime Minister, Cabinet Ministers, Senators, Parliamentarians, etc. Our government structure is still fashioned on the West Minister style as is most of the British Commonwealth, though we are independent.

There are good parts and bad parts but, yes these are thought of as the slums and yes some white people live there too it's just that in the Bahamas they are the minority.

It's not the buildings that matter it's the people and I have been coming to Nassau since the 60's and the Bahamian people are the reason why I continue to come. You passed some really great spots and unfortunately you should have gone in. Best Deal Liquors where you started has the best prices on the island, and you missed the opportunity to eat real Bahamian Foods, drink at really unbelievably reasonable prices and most of all get to meet and know some locals.

I first came to Exuma in the early 1990s. I feel in love with the people immediately. I even married a Bahamian girl. We go back to Nassau, and Exuma regularly. The Bahamas is the most effluent country in the West Indies. But their wealth can’t be counted in dollars. It is in their way of life, and love of people.

Seems the problem with most of those houses that they passed are the same as i've seen in some other countries, they're old-, or old-style homes. I did not see garbage all over the place.

I Love my country, you may call that area the 'slums' but thats where some of the most intelligent and influential people of this Bahama land came from!

Misinformation. That's all it is. I don't blame you personally but I blame that "guide". She should've told you that part of town and areas that look like that are the result of what bahamians could and were allowed to afford back then (60s-70s and so on). The houses were small, wooden, and tightly packed. Generations are born in those houses and passed down through the years so thats why some are still there and look unmaintained but where progression has influence you see modern homes aswell.

Unless this was shot on a weekend day, I'm curious as to why there seem to be so many young, working aged people sitting on their front stoops and milling around, doing nothing. It sure looks like a lot of the urban slums here in the US.

+PO Felcher Because there's not alot of work in Nassau. If you are from a working class home and arent hired on by the tourist industry than you're pretty much out of work. There's definitely a moneyed elite, but their kids are sent to private schools and then are often shipped over to the U.S. for post secondary education. Also with the opening up of Cuba, a much bigger, and cheaper, island to American tourists this coming Spring, the Bahamian tourist industry is set to take a pretty major blow.

Because their homes are probably already PAID OFF! They don't have to work as hard as we do, and they actually own. no HOA's no and if any yearly taxes, it's not as high as ours. There is MORE to life than working yourself to death for someone else so they enjoy the fruits of your labor.

If you go get an air bnb and fly to a smaller island from Nassau it’s basically feeling like only 100 people around you and so much empty beaches food isn’t that expensive average $10-$30 a meal

This isn't even the slums. It's much worse than this lol. I rode scooters around the island. I wanted to get away from the tourist areas and find a more private beach. We did, but our journey around the island was eye opening. Garbage everywhere. Cars on blocks, no wheels smashed out windows, burned- scattered around on the sides of the roads. Trash dumped randomly. Houses destroyed by hurricanes, half repaired and occupied. The island is a real dump. The poverty is very high there. It's inhabited by all black people, maybe that has something's to do with it. Traditionally they have a lack of respect for their environment. It doesn't cost a thing to not litter and take care of your surroundings.
