Riding Japan's Bullet Train for 1 Entire Day 🚅 

ANOTHER TRAIN JOURNEY!! (PS this was actually filmed BEFORE my Seishun 18 one!!) Also.... I realised the first train was actually a Limited Express Super Hokuto, and not a bullet train oops!! 🚅 WHERE SHOULD I GO TO NEXT??

The Hokuto is not a bullet train but a limited express train from Sapporo to Hakodate, and its travel time is almost half the journey. That is why it is not advisable to take the train from Tokyo to Sapporo or visa versa yet.. as we will need to wait until they extend the bullet train line from Shin Hakodate to Shin Sapporo.

Thank you Sarah for these wonderful, down-to-earth travel videos. I love the way you travel and the format of your videos! And I agree, Trains are great!... Whenever I travel between Malmö and Stockholm here in Sweden, I always take the cheap and slow morning trains. It takes 5.5h and they have cafeteria cars where you can get coffee, tee, cakes, snacks, sandwiches and stuff, every seat has a 220V outlet... So I just use the time to do some work, watch nature, or play some video games... It's super comfy, and I don't mind the extra 1½ hour ride for the cheap price and experience. :) But I do envy you for living in Japan, I have only been there once, a three week trip just before the pandemic and it was the best trip I ever made. That time I traveled to both S.Korea and Japan using trains and ferry. It was such a relaxed way of travel compared to going by plane... :)

Shinkansen + Suntory Highball + Ekiben is my favourite way to travel.

This is totally something I would do. I like the destination but sometimes the journey is the destination. Chilling on a bullet train, listening to music, play games, seeing the countryside go past is relaxing for me. Ironic since I'm not a huge fan of travelling to work but its different when you're doing it for leisure with no dreaded work on the other side.

My son and I were in Japan for 6 weeks end of June through august 9th, the longest journeys on the bullet train we took were from Hiroshima to shin halo age and the other really long one was from Asahikawa to kanazawa....awesome rides . we went from wakkanai to Okinawa and all points in between east to west..(yes , I know the shink does not go to Okinawa but I think you get the point, we flew from fukuoka). Best thing I ever did in my 53 years , and I got to do it with my 18 year recent high school grad . My first vacation , for real , and a grad gift for a lifetime to remember . Now , I'm poor , 😂😂😂. Actually looking at perhaps the two of us making a move..it really got to be like home . Great vid, thanks .

When I was in Japan in June I stayed in Sendai for seven days and took all the Tohoku Shinkansens (including the ones that go to Akita and actually run on normal train lines after they split in Morioka) and back including the one to Shin-Hakodate, I admit I kinda love trains too (also got the JR pass so it was included and at this time it was still available for the lower price :)). There is just something I really love about japanese trains (even the slow/regional ones...)

FYI. Being in a tunnel during an earthquake is actually one of the safest places to be. You probably won't feel a thing. The shockwaves just travels around the open space. You just have to make sure the entrance doesn't collapse and a fault line doesn't cross the tunnel.

I did a couple of long shinkansen rides on my last trip. The first one was Tokyo to Hakodate, and the last one was Hakata to Tokyo. I didn't struggle for anything to do. I mostly looked out the window and ate food lol. I love the English stations announcer. Her voice is so soothing. I always thought she was Australian. I can definitely hear a bit of Aussie (as I am Aussie). I don't think she's British...

NOT crazy at all. I love train travel! I've done San Francisco, CA to Portland, OR and back on Amtrak's mediocre equipment (but we did get full dining services) and still thoroughly enjoyed the overnight hauls. This looked like so much fun! Also, that one bit of luggage with the shoe tied to it looked like someone packed a person... 😄

I did the reverse route in 2020 using the JR East-South Hokkaido rail pass. Its fun spotting the escape routes while underwater between Aomori and Hakodate. They emit a constant noise.

The view, the trains and @seerasan eyes are the most astonishing of the trip, love your video Sarah 👏🏽👏🏽

I would definitely have joined you for this one. I love trains and seeing all the beautiful scenery. Its a pity that the states don't use them as much as Japan does honestly. You should definitely go back during Winter. The winter scenery would be absolutely gorgeous I suspect. You could even go back to Ningle Terrace and seeing if that coffee house is open this time.

You had a very good experience on this trip. 🤗 The train you took from Sapporo to Shin-Hakodate Hokuto was not a bullet train. However, you were able to see the wonderful scenery unique to Hokkaido. They are beautiful mountains, rivers, oceans, lakes, and ranches. 💖✨ But, when the bullet train extends to Sapporo in 2030, unfortunately most of them won't be visible because of the tunnel. 😢

If I lived in Japan and had the time I would love to try this trip, however if I ever do visit Japan one day. i'll be on a tight schedule and I doubt I'd spend so much time on a train. I think i heard someone else say they always travel by flight because it's significantly faster and even cheaper. But for those who love trains or hate planes and have the time, seems like a fun way to travel.

I've done this! I loved it! Sure, you could take a boring old plane that would be the same anywhere else in the world, but you'd miss out on the unique shinkansen experience and inaka views. It's all about the journey.

Also, JR designed that tunnel with earthquakes in mind. It may feel unnerving, but you'd arguably be safer there than most buildings.

Thanks for all the tips, Sarah, We are planning to take the same Shinkansen next May from the cherry blossoms of Hakodate to Tokyo.

We'll have to ride the shinkansen as much as possible before the price hike this October after all. Rode the Tokaido, Kyushu and Tohoku shinkansen lines the past 2 trips, gonna take the Yamagata shinkansen for this coming trip. Pity that I'll have to pay a little more if I want to try out the other shinkansen routes for future trips...

I've done a similar distance (a little shorter) in Greece from Alexandroupoli to Sparta, and on an old train... and standing... it was 'fun'!

They need to get that Shinkanzen line extended all the way to Sapporo and a dedicated tunnel line under the Tsugaru Strait (currently a low speed zone because of shared with freight).

I share your train enthusiasm, so far as to go to the National Railway Museum in York, England recently, and even 'ride' a Shinkansen there😅 I live in north of Scotland and the vast majority of friends and family live in the south of England and Wales, so I'm fair accustomed to long train journeys. While the excitement can run thin at times as you found, especially given overcrowded and delayed trains in the UK are frequent, I do enjoy long train journeys, especially when there's only a couple of changes. Coastal routes in the UK are particularly beautiful, though in Japan, I think I'd love to watch the scenery travelling through the mountain!

Love this! You're basically going all Pokemon on Japanese train journeys - gotta ride em' all! I'm with you on this though, I could happily just go to Japan and just ride all the different train journeys - especially the Sunrise sleeper trains! You've got to cover those at some point Sarah!

Regarding 12:15, my recollection is that, during an earthquake, deep underground is actually one of the safest places to be … something to do with inertia within a moving solid as opposed to on its surface. Plus Japan’s trains are all hooked up to an earthquake early-detection system, which stops trains and shuts off their electricity the moment any precursor vibrations are felt. So in the event of an earthquake, being deep underground on a Japanese train is kinda like winning earthquake lottery!

I enjoyed your journey. I will be doing the first part from Sapporo to Hakodate in October. Starting to get excited as my 3 week JR Pass arrived this morning🤩. Your journey costs about Y28000 but JR pass works out at Y2650!!! per day. Unbelievable value. Oh and I agree with the corridor window view. I have the best picture and video of Fuji of all my trips. As for your next trip, anywhere by train is fine by me. Keep up the good work☺

I don’t think it’s crazy. I think its awesome. I wanted to take the Hayabusa, and Sendai happened to be the bonus of that trip.

The longest I have travelled by shinkansen in one day was Niigata to Osaka via Tokyo (I LOVE bullet trains!). Longest journey by train so far has been LA to NY on Amtrak (with 2 multi-day stopovers). Much slower but there was a cafeteria. Longest Aussie train trip was Fassifern to Melbourne, and the onboard hot meals were really really good!

I did this journey TWICE last year and I regret doing it the second time... not because it was bad, but because it COST so much compared to flying lmao. I loved the train ride itself, the scenery in Hokkaido during summer and autumn was absolutely stunning and just staring outside the window(s) was amazing. But even still, the third time around I chose to fly from Tokyo to Sapporo instead. I've also went from Kagoshima to Tokyo with the Shinkansen - which takes only about 6 hours or something because the entire way is Shinkansen. Also loved that one. Surprised you like Mister Donut. Myself and a lot of others I talked to think it is hilariously bad. Yet, I still get baited every time, thinking "Surely they have gotten better by now..."

I remember when I did Osaka to Sapporo by train... It was a 13hr journey to our airbnb and we only did it to maximize value from the then already excellent value JR pass. We travelled on the last day our pass was active and that journey alone cost around 30000 yen i'd say. I quite enjoyed it for the most part as I sleep like a baby on trains!

Love the train content! I've taken the Hokuto and Shinkansen to/from Sapporo several times, it's pretty convenient for short notice trips when you don't have time to book a flight.

As someone who is gonna be traveling alone in Japan this makes me feel less woried. Great video!

I did Osaka to Sapporo in 2018. Took a long time. I think about 11 hours in total. But it was worth it for the experience.

Nice! I did this exact trip back in Nov 2019, the views from the Super Hokuto were stunning. The bit where you go underwater was super weird, I couldn't really tell when we started being underwater versus just the mountain portion. Blasting in and out of the valleys was cool too. Oop, there goes a whole town, and another, and another...

Starbucks and Hokkaido milk are also my favorite drinks in Japan 😀

The first train was not actually a Shinkansen. It's a Limited Express train, they are petty slow and the reason why the first leg took about 4 hours for 300km. The Hayabusa is the actual Shinkansen and is also the fastest one, only taking 3,5 hours for 820km,

I did that journey but over two days, to go to the Sapporo Snow Festival. On the way up I stopped at Hakodate for the night to see the famous night view, and on the way back I stopped at Sendai to stay in Matsushima (so beautiful! 😍). I really enjoyed looking at all the scenery out the window, especially as it got snowy as we travelled north. It was so strange how mild it was in Tokyo in winter, then stepping out into the snow in Hakodate where it was FREEZING!

When we visited Japan - we were so smitten by the Shinkansen - there were times when we went just for a ride on the trains to see the countryside. They are a wonderful experience

I also recommend traveling from Ooarai(大洗, 2hours bus trip from Tokyo Sta.) to Tomakomai(Near Sapporo), with Ferry. They have resturants and kiosks, and public bath (but not onsen). It is 18hours over night travel. Most of Japanese have never experience this.

My longest trip in japan was from nagasaki to tokio, super chill....sapporo to sendai was the second longest I think

I'm surprised there is no cafe option on the shinkansen as in Europe most long distance trains do, I never thought about it when I rode the shinkansen but it must be because of all the options at the station and when the train stops there is usually enough time to rush to a vending machine on the station to get drinks.

You can't ride shinkansen to Sapporo. Last stop is shin Hakodate.

Well, not crazy, just dedicated. In 2019 I took all of the Kyushu, Sanyo, Tokaido and Hokkaido Shinkansen. Started at Kagoshima-chuo in the late afternoon, spent the night in Osaka and rode to Shin-Hakodate the next day. The Shinkansen is just a great way to travel!

Same journey coming up in January 2024, though we may get to Shin-Hakodate earlier and have a longer break before catching the shinkansen to Tokyo - just to break it up a bit. Can't wait!!

I have already traveled the entire Shinkansen rail network except for the route from Yamagata to Shinjo.

I love trains too and would totally do this!
