A solo motorcycle trip through the Arkansas Delta may sound like a bland place to travel. In reality, Arkansas is the hidden gem of the Southern United States for great motorcycle rides and destinations. The Great River Road National Scenic Byway runs along the eastern edge of Arkansas for 391 miles. In this episode, we’ll be riding the first half of the byway from Blytheville to Helena.
Blytheville: At the northern terminus of the Arkansas portion of the Great River Road, you’ll find Blytheville. It’s home to a historic Greyhound Bus Station, one of only three of its kind left.
Hog Pen BBQ: BBQ is a foodie staple in the Arkansas Delta. While not on my original itinerary for the day, I couldn’t pass by without stopping after being able to smell the BBQ from the roadway. This is a hidden gem eatery in the Delta.
Wilson, Arkansas: Wilson was once a booming cotton-producing town, completely owned by one man: Robert Wilson. As technology changed the need for manual labor, the population of Wilson declined. Eventually, the Lawrence Group invested into Wilson, and is currently reviving the town. The Wilson Cafe is a destination eatery in the Delta. Soon, Wilson will have a hotel and other
Mississippi River State Park: All Arkansas State Parks are free to enter, and the Great River Road intersects the Crowley’s Ridge Scenic Byway here in the State Park. The road is pleasantly twisty, and there are two lakes to cool off in.
Helena: The historic town of Helena is one of 3 towns in Arkansas where you can find a bridge crossing the Mississippi River. If you’re a fan of Civil War History, Helena has plenty of it. It’s also home to one of the premier Bed and Breakfasts in the Delta, the Edwardian Inn. Built in 1904 and transformed into a BNB in the 1980’s, this historic home is on the National Register of Historic Places.
