One time I went on one of these and once we got up to speed the operator got out a football and had everyone on the ride pass it around. It was really trippy because no one knew where the ball was gonna go lol. But yea lol I love telling that story
Back when I was 6 or so one of these things showed up at a carnival in town. What was really memorable is that I was, and probably still am, insane enough to actually try to stand upright and start walking around. Let me tell you it was some of the weirdest things I have ever experienced in my life and that's saying something.
The ride spins so fast that the centrifugal force makes you stuck to the wall with gravity as it rotates. Like spinning a bucket of water without having any fall out.
MichelleLoves Rabbit No, people would fly to the right, since only the machine stops. They'd still be travelling to the right with the speed the machine was spinning.
MichelleLoves Rabbit no, its called inertia. At our carnival and stuff we call it Area 51 and it goes so fast (85 mph) its hard to move ur head for some people and it can break ur neck if u look back too far Anyway, with the inertia we would be flying to the left (cuz its spins left) at 85 mph
I remember for a few years at my fair, my friends and I would milk this ride for all it was worth, flipping ourselves, sitting upright on the wall, etc. Sucks though because last year they started kicking people off the ride if they didn't stay upright. Really sucks because screwing around with being stuck to the wall is literally the entire selling point of the ride. Otherwise, it's just a somewhat uncomfortable experience that leaves you dizzy afterwards.
Being in the center, his moment of inertia is much lower (recall from intro physics inertia is proportional to distance from center of axis of rotation) and therefore he feels much less torque and tangential velocity/acceleration. Also, since his reference frame is stationary, he doesn't observe any rotational motion. I'm surprised that no one had answered this question in 6 months, its a good one.
They call it gravitron because you experience 3gs of gravity, the feeling of 3x gravity. It's not to experience speed. It doesn't make you dizzy much either. There is no reference points to experience being dizzy
For all those who dont know, the force of gravity is many times LESS on the operator in the middle than on you who ride on the outskirts. In addition to this, some rides are now even built where the operator actually doesnt spin anymore, just the sides. Plus, if you pay attention, they actually change out with another guy to give him a break so he can rest and acclimate to regular gravity again. Just so you know.
No gravitrons are built where the operator is on the middle and doesn't spin! If they did, he would be very sick with everything spinning around him at 24rpm (22 on some models) unless he closed his eyes... But then he couldn't keep an eye on the rides. Anyway, the forces on the operator don't cause any discomfort... Just take a bit of getting used to!

@@simonsteele1805 agree. It used to be where they spun along with the riders, but now the middle section doesnt spin
The new gravitrons are no different. Maybe you're thinking of a different ride. It's impossible to watch the safety of the riders if they are moving around you at 24rpm.... Which is a legal requirement. So basically If the operator is in the centre of any gravitron, he spins with the ride.
@ I think we are misunderstanding each other. I am saying the complete ride spins. The operator is inside at the centre and spins on the spot with the ride. This is why when you look at him, it looks as though he Isnt spinning. There are no gravitrons where the ride spins around the operator (which to the riders would appear as though he was spinning on the spot) the entire ride spins... Its very simple. The ride design hasn't changed over the years, apart from cosmetics. Those built by ARM in the UK and Vekoma in the Netherlands are also the same. It is a strange feeling when you operate one... Takes getting used to... Which is why staff sometimes switch. I used to operate one years ago and loved it... I used to do it all day.. No problem.
Lei Chen I did too, it's the blood rushing upwards and it makes pumping blood more difficult while it's happening, the effect makes your blood feel denser, harder to pump to brain and limbs. Prolonged time in one will make you pass out, a lot of time in one could kill you too no doubt
Used work at a carnival with a two of thease. There was a one guy that would walk on the rails while its spinning. Also the guy in the middle doesn't feel much of anything because you don't have any scenery to make you dizzy.
They had one of the things at a music festival called Hulaween, all kinds of folks were ingesting psychedelics then getting on it. The stories were pretty awesome to say the least.
I actually did this last night, peaking on 2 hits of acid. The fair was amazing... this ride how ever made me so uncomfortable, I felt the blood rush to my head, my breathing become harder, and It was such a terrible feeling lol. You don't get dizzy, you don't experience the speed because there is no reference point, and everything is moving together, so rather it feels more like a switch is cut on and you're just experiencing the force from no where
I met my friends at the county fair yesterday. One of them was bugging me to go on the Gravitron. I didn't want to go on it because I have a huge phobia of someone puking on me. So my friend went on it himself and I watched him. After the rides ended, I see girls coming off that you would have to bribe to go on those spin my apples. So after my friend and I walked around a little bit and going on other rides, he was still bugging me. Finally we walked by the Gravitron entrance, I finally said, "What the h*ll!" And walked in the Gravitron. Best decision ever.
Yeah that's my problem too. I have SEVERE emetaphobia. I just couldn't get on one unless it was a brand new ride and I was the only one in it. Maybe I could ride with my kid since I know he has no problem with the ride.
I'm the same way . My son went on it recently and I was analyzing every kid in the line on the way in to see if they were going to puke or not. I was so scared that my son was going to come out covered in someone else's puke. I saw a kid clutching at his stomach on his way off and I walked away as quick as I possibly could.
So I’ve never gone on the gravitaron and I get super motion sick on planes do you think I will throw up if I went on the gravitron? Like serious question. I’m 12 btw and I am super nervous but really wanna go on it.
They had one of these at my home town's local show today.... I didn't try it...my ten year old daughter did... she gave it the thumbs up......next year... I'm giving it a go!
The good old days, when the gravitron was really popular you would go in listen to rock music and the operator would hang out and talk to everybody and maybe crack a few jokes, and there will be music playing and you would spend so fast that you actually lift up off the ground and it also spun you so fast where you were unable to get off the wall because of centrifugal force
Does this ride give you a tickle in your tummy, like the orbitor or pharaohs furry, or tilt-o-whirl. I love the orbitor, it always makes my stomach, tickle, like a roller coaster...but never been on this so wanted to know does it give the same feeling, in your stomach?
Think of how dizzying it would be if he sat still and saw the ride spin around him? He spins as well, but not with the same force as everyone else. Since he' in the middle, it really doesn't feel like spinning to him. It would feel like he's sitting still
I normally don't do carnival rides. I did this one more than 30 years ago. High as a kite. Loved it so much it's the only ride I will still do. And I'm in my 50s now.
This ride is so fun! The last time I rode one of these mofos was at the Texas State Fair! Also, I hope you don't mind me using a snapshot of this video for a video I'm doing. Don't worry, I'll credit you.
I remember a while back in the 90s the guy in the middle booth got out and was holding onto the pole and he let go on accident 😂 I remember they had to do a emergency stop on the ride cause were spinning for a long time
I got on this thing the other day at the fair. I could barely take it. Only 1.5 G's and I could barely breath. I hate that because I aspire to be a pilot when I'm older lol
I worked for Deggeller Attractions and have?had the pleasure of setting up,running and operating the Starship 4000 & I love doing it and would do it again if given the opportunity of doing so with Deggeller Attractions..
I went on this yesterday and he whole thing was full with people so you couldnt like move around and they spun it so fast i couldnt move at all not even like my arm, but it was still cool, hard to breath though
I went on this it was so much fun when you go up! tip: to not get dizzy, look at just one spot, and just keep looking at it until the ride stops. [WARNING:] Don't wear a necklace on this ride; I learned it the hard way.
Once at a fair, I rode on one so many times in a row that I had to sit down and put my head between my legs because I felt like I was gonna throw up. Good times.
