Thanks for posting these vids. As a southern based rider, they are really useful to help me select trails for my visits north. Lovely though the south coast rides can be, the chance to ride on more friendly roads is appreciated, as is the ale.

I've ridden part of this route a few times; the Water Rail Way on the other side of Lincoln can take you even further east, plus cycling through Lincoln to get to it is relatively straightforward as a good third of the roads now have dedicated cycle ways. Traveling west from Harby on the track bed will eventualy lead you to the Fledborough Viaduct, which has been opened in recent years for cyclists and walkers and bridges the River Trent, leading to Tuxford and onto Clumber Park or Sherwood Forest for example. One word of advice though; do NOT cycle over the A46 bridge (where the commentary mentions a good set of balance). There is almost zero clearance either side as they took away part of the verge of the A46 to create the narrow path, and I've seen a number of cyclists come a cropper - one with handlebars jammed in the railings causing him to flip over and another with a badly gashed and bleeding forearm where a loss of balance caused him to scrape against the rough concrete wall. There are numerous signposts informing cyclists to dismount on this bridge.

Thanks for the comments Dizdo, we have some videos of the other areas you mention already on the channel & other in the archive somewhere, Part of the water railway is here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-D3ovwnzmyao.html, we do have the full trip to Boston and back somewhere on my harddrive. We started at the sailing club as parking there is free. We have the Dukeries on film somewhere which goes over Fledborough Viaduct I believe We started at Shirebrook and once rode to Tuxford had lunch at the windmill and came back. The next time we rode Shirebrook over the viaduct and on to The Pyewipe Inn on the Fosdyke just outside of Lincoln. Thanks for the warning about the bridge, it is quite narrow and the advisory notices do suggest you should dismount. I am sure each user of the trail will take the sings into consideration when they reach the bridge. Thanks for the feedback, it's always appreciated Steve

2:35 you literally rode past my house overlooking the river. Nice bit up near the quary but you have to be careful not to miss the left just before crossing over the train tracks 9:13, I missed it too first time lol. Nice ride out to the giant shop at doddington hall.

Thanks Barry I have always found that part of the world pretty nice, We have also ridden part of the Water Rail Way and the Dukeries, both good routes and are worth trying out if you have not already. Newark to Lincoln is a good ride but it may be a little harder to follow than some of the other National Cycle routes we have tried out.

I've thought about joining up the Water Railway and the NCN 64 - how suitable is the NCN 64 for a road bike?

I don't think you would have much of an issue, parts of the route from Newark to Harby are on quiet roads, the stretch from Harby in to Lincoln is well surfaced in most places. I'd recommend 25mm tyres for added comfort but even those are not a requirement really. Steve

I've done this several times, carrying in to Boston on the Water Rail Way, on a road bike with 25mm gatorskin (ie slick) tyres. It's absolutely fine, the only problem I've ever encountered was the off-road track about 4 miles out of Newark which was a bit slippy in a couple of places after rain. The rest of the route, including the old railway lines, is great and it is so flat - only just over 100m of climbing in 95 km from Newark to Boston and I can't really think where that was!

@@keithphillips7320 thanks for the reply! I've done this a million times since - I love it. I once cycled both all the way to Boston and turned around back to the Fledborough viaduct and then home. I love how you can one minute be in rural Lincolnshire and the next be right in the city centre. Butchers at Bardney comes highly recommended too!

Yes you'd be fine as its lanes to Harby and also quite flat. A lovely route, I did it from Grantham to Newark and into Lincoln took 5 hours at a steady pace.

Thanks for this video - but please cut out the tinny, repetitive background "muzak" it is so annoying and distracting - just the sounds of the countryside with the commentary would be better.

I agree, the inappropriate doom-laden music in these videos is a real turn off. Such a shame as they are excellent in every other respect.
