I really enjoyed your discussions on dune. Im almost done with the series. And i was wondering what you think about my take. The first book is a red herring for readers to manipulate them into the true morals of the story “colonialism is poisonous in any flavor” house atreides - “colonialism with good intentions” the most respected house, atreidies are known for valuing loyalty, justice, and strength of character, to rule with a fair and kind fist. It takes over arrakis to listen too and include the indigenous freemen and rule them in a kind way rather then the awful horkonnens rule. house harkonnen - “colonialism in its rawest form” the most feared house, harkonnens are known to be crafty and powerhungry with reputation of being cruel, sadistic, hedonistic and exploiting weakness where they can find it. They trait the indigeniuos freemen as pest to be used. Been gesserit - “colonialism in its most sophisticated form” the most manipulative force in the galaxy. Every bene gesserit is in complete control of there mind and body. Their main intentions is to protect the continuation of humanity that they see fit. They are the opposite of chaos and the epitome of control. They germinate religions on all planets that benefit them when they arrive to said planet to conquer. They affect the freemen by germinating a savior religion upon them long ago so the can key themselves in when they need to. (It reminds me of the deep rooted Christian religion that many natives today practice) CHOAM - “ Basically the corporatism version of colonialism” “The whole point of the book in my opinion” true humanity lies with the freeman. Tribal patriarchal collectives of people. They respect, thrive and adapted to the harshest of lands of arrakis like no other. Water is life and they know the importance of resources. But outside sources slowly corrupt the Harmony of the freeman and the planet of dune The obvious first book shows the bad side of colonialism with the brutality of harkonnens and the “good side” of colonialism which is the atraides. With the help of the bene gesserit seeded propaganda of religion they see Paul as a savior. The second book shows the consequences of their success. Paul harnesses the power of the freemen to conquer the galaxy. The freemen get what they couldn’t even comprehend. You admire water? Let me take you to ocean planets. Signs of the efficient and keen freeman weening start to show. They wear their suits looser, they make houses out of mud. Despite the riches they gain from proper colonialism they lose themselves and possibly their planet. the third book the planets not even recognizable anymore. It’s a lush blooming planet. The ways of freeman are the thing of the past. And because of that the demise starts. And it sums up that all the metaling from the harkonnens, the atraides, the benne gesserit, CHOAM. Everybody idea of the true path ruins everything. 9:49 9:50

You two having question about how Fremen steer the worms makes me feel you not only didn't read the book carefully but also didn't watch the movie carefully. It's really clearly conveyed through visual language that you pull on the worm hooks to expose the worm's sensitive skin to the sand. The worm will turn according to this motion to protect itself from abrasion.

I don't know which one's more painful to watch: Dune being read as a white savior story rather than a critique of it, or Paul being celebrated as a hero.... The book was not subtle at all when it comes to what the author thought about this Messiah business. "In that instant, Paul saw how Stilgar had been transformed from the Fremen naib to a creature of the Lisan al-Gaib, a receptacle for awe and obedience. It was a lessening of the man, and Paul felt the ghost-wind of the jihad in it. I have seen a friend become a worshiper, he thought. In a rush of loneliness, Paul glanced around the room, noting how proper and on-review his guards had become in his presence. He sensed the subtle, prideful competition among them-each hoping for notice from Muad’Dib. Muad’Dib from whom all blessings flow, he thought, and it was the bitterest thought of his life. They sense that I must take the throne, he thought. But they cannot know I do it to prevent the jihad."

Where to begin!? First, the films were beautifully made reactionary trash. It does not even begin to try to do the book. Which is a beautiful reactionary masterpiece. Compellingly written and profoundly articulated. The vision and complexity of which seems to be impossible to translate to other media. Actually enough said.

Imagine an alternate universe version of the "Avatar" movies where Jake Sully goes on to lead the Na'vi in a genocidal interstellar war that kills over 60 billion people and by the end everybody who cheered on his white savior narrative from the first movie feels sick to their stomachs for having done so. That's basically "Dune".

I'm not gonna name names but a black sci-fi RU-vid creator came out and said with his chest that Dune was not a white savior film; I'm pretty sure the video is still up bc the comments were yassing him. He's obvs white-aligned imo and holding internalized oppression, but it was still wild to hear in 2023. Like it literally is a white savior film 😵‍💫

34:02 your reaction 🤣🤣🤣🤣 same. I'm gonna name names cuz I watched summaries of the Dune Books on "Quinn's Ideas", the guy who I'm talking about in my original comment, and they're really good! About 2 hours each. I haven't read the books or seen the movies, just the summary videos, but the Dune universe is fascinating.

I think the worms know where to go because they are literally made of spice precursors or the spice itself. They are supernatural beings.

There is a theory in orientalist studies that says Islam was basically just a derivative of Christianity and has no original native aspects to it. There are academics that still hold to this theory today. It wouldn't surprise me if Herbert also subscribed to this idea and wrote the Bene Ghesserit and their importation of a Messiah as a nod to such an islamophobic idea.

No it’s not. You and your propaganda language are totally wrong. Ask me how.
